Would you like heroin with that Happy Meal?

A Pennsylvania woman is accused of using a McDonald's drive-thru window to sell heroin along with Happy Meals.

A Happy Meal costs no more than $2.99, unless you bought it at the McDonald's in East Liberty near Bakery Square and gave the special code word to one woman, Shantia Dennis.

Dennis denies it, but police said she sold Happy Meals for $82, $2 for the toy and $80 for the heroin inside.

"It surprises the hell out of me, that you can come to McDonald's and get a Happy Meal and some fries and a bag of dope, man. Come on," customer Hackee Everett said.

Grand Rapids police say a man set his hotel bed on fire because he thought there were demons in the room.

It happened Sunday afternoon at the Knights in Hotel on Plainfield Avenue NE, just north of I-96.

The damage was contained to one hotel room.

The man who allegedly set the fire was arrested.

NCR: Pope "has expressed an intention" to visit US in 2015

Pope Francis has expressed an intention to visit the United States in September 2015, according to Vatican sources who spoke to NCR on background this week, who stressed that nothing is official and the date is too far into the future to be certain.

The primary motive for the trip would be the eighth edition of the World Meeting of Families, an event held every three years that was launched under Pope John Paul II in 1994 and is held in various parts of the world. The Vatican announced in February 2013, shortly before the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI, that the next edition will be Sept. 22-27, 2015, in Philadelphia.

The family has been a major preoccupation both for the church generally and for Francis personally. Among other things, the pope has dedicated the next meeting of the Synod of Bishops, scheduled for October, to the theme of the family.

Because the General Assembly of the United Nations generally meets in September, there is also speculation that Francis might combine the Philadelphia outing with a stop in New York to address the U.N.

Multi-faith building being planned for Berlin

At a church near Berlin’s bustling Alexanderplatz, an evangelical pastor, a rabbi and an imam have conducted interfaith services on special occasions for the past two years. Now they plan to build a multifaith prayer building.

Billed as a landmark Jewish-Muslim-Christian prayer space, the building will combine a church, a synagogue and a mosque under one roof, next to one of Berlin’s busiest streets. Its organizers hope to make the German capital a meeting ground of world cultures and international relationships.

“Berlin is a multi-faceted city,” said Kandir Sanci, the imam of the House of Prayer and Learning, the association behind the project. “You find many people of all kinds of religions. I feel that the city is very engaged to support the various religions and make them feel at home.”

In a few months, the House of Prayer and Learning will launch a crowdsourcing campaign with a goal of raising an estimated 30 million euro, about $40 million.

Lawsuit: Woman forced to cut dreadlocks after bedbugs found in hotel room

An assistant tennis coach at Homewood-Flossmoor High School, Donna Brumfield, and her group checked into the Palatine Holiday Inn Express in October 2012 for a tennis meet.

She ended up meeting bedbugs, according to a lawsuit filed Tuesday in Cook County Circuit Court. Before the ensuing ordeal ended, Brumfield was forced to chop off her cherished, waist-length dreadlocks she had grown for 13 years, the lawsuit alleges.

“If you know how long it takes to grow dreadlocks, you understand the trauma of losing my hair,” says Brumfield, of the south suburbs, who is in her 50’s.

“Harder to explain is the trauma that affects travel for me now. I travel a lot for my work, and every time I have to stay at a hotel I just get filled with anxiety,” she said.

Sotelo: Knights of Columbus leadership seeks to redefine charity

I have always been impressed by the Knights of Columbus' dedication to charity. But over a period of four years, the Knights have donated more than $1.4 million of their "charitable contributions" not to the poor, but to sponsor Catholic bishops to attend medical ethics workshops that increasingly carry a political agenda.

The Knights' sponsorship of these political workshops is listed in their annual reports as charity alongside their Coats for Kids and Food for Families programs. Charity and bishops are both seven-letter words, but I have never confused the two. Unfortunately, it seems the Knights of Columbus have.

I am grateful the Knights are interested in educating bishops about medical ethics, but these classes appear less about education and more about politics. Plus, the fact that the Knights' leadership is using its charitable contributions for politically oriented workshops instead of charity, as their supporters are led to believe, seems anything but ethical.

The Knights of Columbus leadership themselves could benefit from an ethics workshop, one that focuses on the difference between politics and charity.

Admins harangue student journalist over editorial critical of school's naming policy

We recently brought you the unfortunate story of Grand Valley State University (GVSU) student and Grand Valley Lanthorn student newspaper editor-in-chief Lizzy Balboa, who was beleaguered by campus administrators for publishing an editorial expressing concern that GVSU might be prioritizing donor appeasement over education, free speech rights, and academic freedom. Shockingly, administrators reportedly told Balboa that she was unworthy of her scholarship because she was “ungrateful,” and suggested that the Lanthorn retract its editorial and publish puff pieces expressing gratitude to donors.

FIRE has since been told that the administrator who called Balboa’s personal cell phone to dress her down for the editorial was none other than GVSU President Thomas Haas. To be clear, it is unacceptable for any campus administrator to engage in such reprehensible behavior. But the fact that this chilling conduct was allegedly carried out in part by a public university’s top executive—who speaks for the institution itself—is truly remarkable. Such grossly inappropriate actions communicate to the GVSU community and observers nationwide that free speech, critical thinking, and open debate have no home at the university.

Many have rallied to the defense of Balboa and the Lanthorn. In a letter to the editor, GVSU professor Paul Murphy pointed out the irony that we noted: the administrators’ actions thoroughly vindicated the concerns expressed by the editorial. Murphy also (rightly) took the administrators to task for assuming that donor relations would be harmed by the Lanthorn’s editorial:

...

In fact, it appears that these administrators’ actions themselves may have done more to harm donor relationships than the editorial they decried. One commenter on Balboa’s editorial concerning the administrators’ action reported:

Manure dropped in front of French Parliament building

The stench of manure was in the air outside French parliament Thursday after a protester dumped a truck-full of animal excrement in front of the National Assembly in Paris.

According to local reports, the driver left the odorous present for parliament members and President Francois Hollande. "Out with Hollande and the whole political class!" a statement on the side of the truck read, the Agence France-Presse reports.

According to Reuters, the man, who works as a horse breeder, delivered several tons of manure to the gates of the lower house of French parliament to protest a recent tax hike on equestrian activities.

After dropping the load, the man was promptly arrested by police. He is expected to face charges. He has been arrested for similar feces-related protests in the past.

Ex-Little League coach sues player's family for $500,000 because of helmet throw

The family of a California Little Leaguer is being sued because the 14-year-old boy’s helmet injured his former coach.

Chiropractor Alan Beck, of Roseville, is seeking more than $500,000 in a lawsuit that alleges Joe and Raegan Paris’ son threw the batting helmet in the air after scoring the winning run at the end of a game last season.

The lawsuit claims the boy ‘carelessly’ threw the helmet, causing it to strike the coach’s Achilles tendon and tear it, according to KCRA.

‘At first I thought it was joke,’ Joe Paris told the station. ‘Now, I think it's absurd.’

Michigan Man Claims Sasquatch Eats Pizza, Lives in His Yard

Anthony Padilla of Breckendridge, Mich. wants the Midland police to help prove the existence of Bigfoot. When he came to the police station last week he had already done the detective work and was armed with evidence of Bigfoot’s existence on his property in Michigan, including photos, empty pizza boxes, some dirt and alleged Bigfoot scat, according to a report from the Midland County Sheriff’s Office obtained by The Huffington Post. In the incident report, Deputy Thomas Anderson said Padilla asked that the food boxes and scat be tested for DNA.

“He was kindly told that DNA processing is only used for serious crimes and that bigfoot is not a suspect in any criminal activity,” Anderson wrote. “I explained that scat would not contain DNA, and he was reminded that MSP (Michigan State Police) won’t process it.”

After an encounter with what he believed was a hunter in a ghillie suit (TMYK!) on his property turned into a spiritual experience, 52-year old Padilla is now adamant in his belief that Bigfoot is living on his property. “I got to confront this guy I was a little nervous. He was all huge like a basketball player mixed with a wrestler football type size,” said Padilla in the video above. “He started getting blurry, he started getting fuzzy, I started to see antlers starting to evolve and boom he turned around and gave me a vision of a white deer’s tale of two hooves jumping away from me trying to forget what I have seen.”

Padilla now scatters pizza boxes around his property in the hopes of luring Bigfoot back. His interest in the Sasquatch isn’t purely academic, though. Padilla apparently told the Midland police that he wanted them to verify his claim so that he could win a $10 million cash prize from reality show 10 Million Dollar Bigfoot Bounty. Sadly, Midland County Sheriff Scott Stephenson told The Huffington Post they will not be taking any further action on Padilla’s request.
