My "A year ago" post

I started at a new job in February 10th of last year.

Actually a previously held position so they knew me. They basically recruited me to come back.

My wife was all over this disease starting in January. All of her weighted worst case calculations for the US were spot on by month. I started bringing this up at staff meetings at work. One person in the higher ups was on it. I got a lot of poo pooing about it at our meetings. My boss is a longtime Republican from Florida no less. She brushed back/questioned me a year ago. I kept on it.

Almost exactly a year ago I told a coworker the breaking news that the entire basketball tournament was cancelled. Ohio Gov. DeWine was the catalyst for that. I remember the two of us just standing there looking at each other. His look was “Holy —— this is real”.

St. Patrick’s Day last year we got the call. “We’re bugging out” was the joke. Going home, going virtual. One week later we got the call - one day to get what you need from work. The entire site is shutting down (other than maintenance) get in and get what any THING that you need. Take home your plants.

In meetings I told them “This is going to be way worse than you all think it is” and “The thing that’s going to kill us I hate to say is the cowboy attitude we have in this country. ‘Don’t tell ME what to do!’” I meant that on an individual level certainly not from the very top and I expected that at some point there would be a “do the right thing” course correction or adjustment — that I was wrong about.

We went full staff back today. I got my J&J shot on Saturday so I’m not fully covered until the 27th and even then I’m following the rules. Just this morning at the Zoom staff meeting my boss had a fairly casual attitude about the whole thing. She has made a point of talking about going out to dinner on other calls. I just shook my head this morning.

Luckily our national leadership, I wouldn’t say it’s changed I’d say it now exists.

Yoga is now legal in Alabama public schools.....after a 30 year ban

Wonkette but hey, it’s funny.

https://www.wonkette.com/alabama-kids-may-soon-do-yoga-in-gym-class-so-long-as-they-dont-learn-any-sanskrit

On Thursday, the Alabama House voted to end the state's nearly 30-year ban on yoga in schools, so. This is a very big step for the state, which at the behest of conservative groups back in 1993 banned "hypnosis, meditation and yoga" in public schools. Given that list, it seems fair to say that these conservative groups did not actually know what yoga (or meditation) was.

Rather, it had to do with the fact that Alabama Republicans were mad that the First Amendment ban on state-sponsored religion meant that they could not have Christian prayer in schools and that they would have to fight a decades-long battle to keep a ridiculous Ten Commandments monument in their statehouse. Also the fact that a lot of weirdo evangelical types think that yoga opens people up to "demonic possession."

In order to prevent any incidental demonic possession, the Alabama House bill would require schools to follow some pretty strict rules regarding the implementation of yoga in school curriculums. These rules also seem specifically designed to prevent any Alabama child from accidentally finding out about another culture or language — a cancelling of culture, if you will.

The sponsor of the bill, Democratic state Representative Jeremy Gray, is a former cornerback at North Carolina State University and was introduced to yoga through football. He said the exercises can provide mental and physical benefits to students, according to the AP.

Prince William says royals are 'very much not a racist family'

Before anyone says that that has to be the whitest response ever I would like to say that as I a white person I want to make sure everyone knows, it is.

London (CNN)Prince William has denied the royal family is racist in his first public remarks since his brother Prince Harry, and his wife Meghan, made explosive claims in a TV interview.

Asked by a reporter during a visit to a school in east London if the royals were a "racist family," the Duke of Cambridge said, "We're very much not a racist family."

Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, made a series of damning accusations against the royal family in an interview with Oprah Winfrey, which aired in the UK on Monday night.

In response to a question on whether he had spoken to his brother since the interview with Oprah Winfrey, Prince William said, "I haven't spoken to him yet but I will do."

Biden's signature won't appear on third stimulus check, White House says

Source: CNN

(CNN) President Joe Biden's signature will not appear on the stimulus checks expected to be sent to Americans once the Covid stimulus plan is passed, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said Tuesday.

Psaki said during Tuesday's White House press briefing that Biden didn't think the inclusion of his signature on the payments "was a priority or a necessary step. His focus was on getting them out as quickly as possible."

Psaki also said the federal government plans to expand electronic payments, which are "substantially faster" than checks, adding that physical checks will be signed by a career official at the Bureau of the Fiscal Service.

"We are doing everything in our power to expedite the payments and not delay them, which is why the President's name will not appear on the memo line of this round of stimulus checks ... This is not about him. This is about the American people getting relief, almost 160 million of them," she added.
