Inside the GOP Effort to Make Sure Biden Is the Democratic Nominee

Source: Notus.org

Led by conservative think tank The Heritage Foundation, Republicans are currently looking to guarantee that Biden will be the Democratic nominee — and to make it so that, if Biden withdraws, it won’t be easy to replace him on ballots. While Biden’s campaign insists he has no plans to drop out, Republicans are gearing up for any and all possibilities. They’ve been preparing for this moment for quite some time.

About four months ago, after special counsel Robert Hur’s report raised more concerns about Biden’s health, staffers at Heritage’s Oversight Project started researching laws in states across the country for replacing a nominee. They laid out just how difficult it would be for Democrats to replace Biden in key swing states in a memo that was compiled in early April and released last week ahead of the debate.

“If the Biden family decides that President Biden will not run for re-election, the mechanisms for replacing him on ballots vary by state,” reads the memo. “There is the potential for pre-election litigation in some states that would make the process difficult and perhaps unsuccessful.”

The upshot was that replacing Biden on the ticket would be “extraordinarily difficult” and that “we would make it extraordinarily difficult,” Oversight Project Executive Director Mike Howell, who authored the memo, told NOTUS this week.

Today I learned that lo mein and ramen are the same word

the noodles word moved from China to Japan, but the Japanese language doesn't distinguish between "liquid consonants" like L and R. It's all just one letter to them. So borrowed words in Japanese when they're spelled out in English get their Ls and Rs randomly assigned

Sorry, but these "chances of winning" statistics are bullshit

I thought it was bunk when people first started citing it in the Obama elections and these stats make no more sense now. Citing them just grew out of one side's desire to hear good news. But stats aren't there for warm cuddles (nor this year for the foreboding shivers of another Trump term).

Statistics are there to give objective assessments. This "chances of winning" malarkey measures nothing of the sort, as all the input factors will change from week to week between now and the election. It's just a bunch of useless numbers.

It's good for taking bets, I reckon. But a statistic that's based on ever-changing popularity poll numbers is not a valid statistic. It defeats the whole purpose of a projection of the likelihood of something to happen.

Likelihood of outcome, like a lottery payout or a horse winning race, is a look at static data. How likely are the ping pong balls to fall into the lotto chute? How fast are each of these horses? What's the given trajectory of that asteroid compared to earth's orbit, given the laws of motion?

But the ups and downs of popularity polling in response to unknowable future events, like breaking news or voters' growing awareness of races or clever new ads or October surprises... these aren't knowable, let alone quantifiable factors.

In battle simulations, you can give the odds of victory based on troops, equipment, terrain, positioning, even morale--but only once all the combatants has reached the battlefield and commence to fight. You can't give the odds of victory four weeks out (let alone four months out), before you know how many units and which units will reach the battlefield, how much of their artillery is working, how much ammo each side will have, what positions will they occupy on the front, or what other events will affect the war in the mean time.

Elections are like battles more than, say, the chances of rain occurring. The physics of clouds and warm fronts and humidity pockets are predictable factors. They behave. Public moods and emerging crises and marketing spins catching on and dawning attention spans of voting blocs do not follow set rules. Campaigning is an art of timing, not a science of quantifiable reactions. Treating it otherwise is just the age old practice of fooling yourself .

The Party of 'Shut up, sweety' (SC GOP primaries dump 3 female incumbent senators)

Three female GOP state senators who filibustered S.C. abortion ban lost their primaries
They were defeated by three male Republican candidates.

Three Republican state senators in South Carolina who filibustered an abortion ban in the state have lost in their primary elections this month.

Katrina Shealy, Sandy Senn and Penry Gustafson lost to three male candidates and were among a bipartisan group of five women state senators who filibustered a near-total abortion ban. They were nicknamed the "sister senators."

As a result of their coordinated effort, the group was chosen last year to receive the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award.

Netanyahu Walks Back on Hostage/Ceasefire Proposal

Netanyahu Walks Back Gaza Hostage/Ceasefire Deal. Endorsed by Biden

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday said he is interested in a "partial deal" with Hamas that will free "some of the hostages" held in Gaza and allow Israel to continue fighting in the enclave.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday said he is interested in a "partial deal" with Hamas that will free "some of the hostages" held in Gaza and allow Israel to continue fighting in the enclave.

Netanyahu's remarks walk back an Israeli proposal for a three-phase deal that would lead to the release of all remaining 120 hostages and to "sustainable calm" in Gaza.

Netanyahu's comments contradicted statements by Biden administration officials who in recent days said Netanyahu and his aides had reiterated their support for the proposal.

In recent weeks, Netanyahu's radical right-wing coalition partners, ultranationalist ministers Itamar Ben Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich, threatened to leave the coalition and topple the government if the proposal turns into an agreement.

Religion out there working for the betterment of humanity again. Meanwhile Netanyahu still thinks it's better that he holds onto power rather than the hostages getting out.

Is anyone here good with Excel? Or know of a helpful forum? I've just run into a wonky problem

Update: Problem solved, thanks to Unblock

I know this is a leetle OT, but I've been a fan of excel for years and I just ran into a hitch I've never seen before. And I can't find any help from the MS Help button.

On a page I'm making, I hit some keystroke by accident and the page did two weird things
1. it rendered all the columns (which I had a varying widths) to the default of 8.43 / 128 pixels. Hitting Cntl+Z did not undo this

but even more frustratingly...

2. It deformatted all of my cells. It WON'T display my values, only the formulas I wrote in the cells. No matter how I try to fix or reset the formulas & view, it won't show the values of my cells, only the formulas inside them. It wasn't a complicated page. I was just adding and averaging some rows. Where it used to read:
7
14
12
3
6
7
6
5
12
6
78
3.3

It now reads:
7
14
12
3
6
7
6
5
12
6
=SUM(E9:E20)
=E21/7

I've tried the Cntl+1 to reformat the cells, make sure they weren't set to "text". I've gone throough the View Tab options. Nothing makes the spreadsheet go back to showing the Sum and Average I want instead of showing the Excel formula. There's not a reddit group or online forum I've found that can help me troubleshoot this apparent glitch. Does someone have a suggestion of where I can turn to get my Excel to act right?
Sincerely,

Cicero on Maga

A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly.
But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men.
He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist.
A murderer is less to fear.
Cicero

Bonus quote on the MAGAtroids:
"A vile race of Quislings—to use a new word which will carry the scorn of mankind down the centuries—is hired to fawn upon the conqueror, to collaborate in his designs and to enforce his rule upon their fellow countrymen while grovelling low themselves."
Winston Churchill, address to the Allied delegates at St. James's Palace on 12 June 1941.

Ukraine says it destroyed Russian drone base

Source: BBC

23 June 2024, 12:18 BST

Ukraine says satellite pictures show the destruction of a Russian warehouse used to launch Iranian-made drones and to train cadets.

The photos - posted by Ukraine's Navy - follow reports of a massive explosion near a Russian airfield in the southern region of Krasnodar.

Moscow has yet to comment on the reports, but did say it has shot down a number of drones in region overnight on Friday.

Navy officials in Kyiv said a number of training instructors and cadets learning to operate the Iranian-made Shahed drones were killed by the attack, which they said happened on Friday night.
