NASA captures an image of a cosmic hand reaching into a fiery hole

Please, no kink-shaming in this thread

NASA's Chandra X-Ray Observatory Captures Image of Cosmic Hand Reaching Into Fiery Hole
The ‘Hand of God’ combines 14 years of data

like, duuude!

NASA‘s Chandra X-ray Observatory has just released a new image show an incredible image of a distant nebula (17,000 light-years away). While naming nebulae after animals or things they resemble is quite common — see the Eagle Nebula’s Pillars of Creation, the Crab Nebula, Cat’s Eye, and Horse Head — most of them don’t give you chills.

Combining 14 years of data, the nebula in question is MSH 15-52, or the Cosmic Hand Hitting a Wall/Hand of God. And it looks just like its sounds, a creepy transparent hand reaching for a red brick wall/fiery hole. Astronomers estimate that the light from the nebula, which is the remnants of a supernova explosion, reached earth about 1,700 years ago — making it one of the Milky Way galaxy’s youngest nebula.

The finger-like trails are a result of energy and particles being blown by the pulsar and slowing down at various speeds when hitting the dense neighboring RCW 89 gas cloud. The particles are moving at almost 9 million miles per hour, and up to 11 million miles per hour, which is considered slow when compared to the average 30 million miles per hour. This slow down is due to the dense gas it is moving through thanks to RCW 89. Those interested in learning more can head over to NASA’s homepage.

Imagine the Coronavirus is like a plant...

This occurred to me while I was looking at the statistics & graph on Daily New Cases in the United States:

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/us/

Last summer, we had 40,000-70,000 new cases per day, mostly concentrated in a few geographic "hot spots." Then in the winter when we had 150,000-300,000 new daily cases, concentrated in a whole lot of hot spots all over the country.

Those numbers are way way down thanks to Biden's all business, all competence approach. Today the virus has a wide geographic dispersal all over the country with only a few relative "warm" spots... and a national grand totals of 10,000-18,000 new infections per day. This is tragic, of course, but manageable. This year you can compare to a few vines growing into your house through your kitchen and bathroom windows. Last year it was like Kirk and Khan set off the Genesis Device on your dining room table.

...

If the Delta Variant starts hitting us, those numbers may double or even triple, but it won't be like 2020.

...and now for some visual propaganda!!

There were hospital resource shortages last year--in the summer, we were having 40,000-70,000 new cases per day, mostly concentrated in a few "hot spots", and even moreso in the winter when we had 150,000-300,000 new daily cases, concentrated in a whole lot of hot spots all over the country.

Anti-vaxxers, including pro-Trump conspiracy nuts, are 5th columnists aiding the virus

I wouldn't call them traitors. But Vladimir Lenin called them useful idiots.

California is about 50% fully vaxxed; 58% of LA County has gotten both vaccine shots. In the LA Times article below about the Delta Plus Variant spread in LA: only 8% of the Delta Variant cases are among those who've been fully vaccinated while 89% of those who got Deltaed were completely unvaccinated. None of those who were vaccinated needed hospitalization.

The Delta variant’s biggest danger: 'A pandemic of unvaccinated people'

“The Delta variant is more contagious, it’s deadlier and it’s spreading quickly around the world — leaving young, unvaccinated people more vulnerable than ever,” President Biden tweeted Thursday. “Please, get vaccinated if you haven’t already. Let’s head off this strain before it’s too late.”

“If you are fully vaccinated, you have a lot of protection,” L.A. County Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer said. “And for the very small numbers of people that may end up in fact with a breakthrough vaccination case, they really did not have serious illness. … This is a pandemic of unvaccinated people.”

{snip}

Of the 123 people confirmed to have been infected with the Delta variant in L.A. County, 110 were unvaccinated and three were partially vaccinated. There were two hospitalizations among people in this group... {snippo} ... The Delta variant was found in 10 fully vaccinated individuals, none of whom ended up needing hospital care.

{snipperino}

Overall, 372 people are known to have been infected with the Delta variant statewide, according to figures from the California Department of Public Health

The Pfizer vaccine works best against Delta Plus; studies show it's 96% effective at preventing hospitalization. Government at all levels--Biden, Fauci, every member of Congress, and every governor & local official needs to got full court on pushing for vaccines. They protect the health and lives of people and we're lucky in this country that we have a federal government so effective at organizing the distribution. The anti-vaxxers are still trying to leave the country at risk. They are Fifth Columnists in this war. Through their ignorance, they're working for an enemy that's killing Americans.

does anyone here watch "Killing Eve"?

I loved season 1. But season 2 is making about zero sense to me.

No spoilers in this post, but I want to ask questions about episodes 4&5 downthread.

I finally got to the gym for the first time since the pandemic started

Gained a valuable life lesson, too. Apparently in the post-covid world, it's bad form to ask someone else at the gym to "spot you" for kegels.

You live, you learn

Pence now says he is proud of certifying the 2020 election

The National Review calls this "putting distance between him and Trump". To me it looks like his balls are finally starting to drop

Help me see if I understand how this vaccine/herd thing works

There's a thread over in LBN discussing how "most covid deaths now are among the unvaccinated." --I mean, I thought that was always the case, but I think the implication is that it's among the willfully unvaccinated.

Anyway, there were multiple responses making the obvious Darwinian snarkery--self "removal" and all that. And of course, me being me and seeing someone being wrong on the internet, I wanted to wade into the pond of ignorance and start correcting everybody.

But then I was like, "Are you sure you got your facts right there, Bucky ol' pal?" So somebody help me with this. The following is how I understand the problem with there still being large clusters of unvaccinated people milling about in our country:

The vaccines are not 100% effective. So the more people going around unvaccinated, the more of the virus there is out there circulating and living long enough to mutate into different variants--some of which will be able to get past the vaccines the rest of us took.

Plus there are some people who, for various medical reasons, can't get vaccinated. When the rest of us get vaccinated, we protect them. When some of us don't, those people are more at risk.

People refusing to get vaccinated are still putting you and me at risk.

This is how I'm explaining the anti-vax problem to myself and that's why the Darwin Award jokes don't quite make sense. Do I have this right?

Does anyone doubt where this Sen. Whitehouse all white club business is heading?

Sheldon'll have to quit his all white club, no matter what it means to his family's position in the Newport social circuit. How is he not aware of that?

Why do they even still have all white clubs these days? That has no business being a thing anymore. 😆 -- Sheesh, bigots, just go out and grab yourself a lawyer or a stock broker off the closest golf course.

(the skinny, in case you're not hip to the latest needless distraction)
