Fela Kuti lives on in these young Chilean musicians

Just discovered Newen Afrobeat today by accident while browsing other music on YouTube. Check them out... you’ll be glad you did!

Not only is their music smoking, but their live performances are demonstrations in support of the Mapuche cause. (“Newen” means strength in the Mapuche language.)

Live performance of Fela’s song “Zombie” (warning to those with strobe light sensitivity — there is a section at about the 10-minute mark where the stage lighting flashes on and off very intensely):

Studio recording of Fela’s song “Opposite People” featuring Seun Kuti on vocal and Cheick Tidiane Seck on keyboard:

Iron Butterfly: Soul Experience

As I woke up this morning, I kept hearing a lyric in my head, sung in a weird, affected male voice that I knew I found oddly comforting: “Don’t bother paintin’ yo fa-ace.”

I kept thinking, “What the hell is this from? Have I forgotten everything?” Then I raced to the computer and searched the Intertubes for this phrase. Sure enough, it was “Soul Experience” by Iron Butterfly, my favorite track from their 1969 album Ball. Happy fiftiefth anniversary!

Peanut Butter Porter for happy hour!

WITH peanuts! Nirvana...

This beer is from Back Forty Beer in Alabama. It’s delicious and, at 10.5% ABV, it’s potent!

Look at me, using all these exclamation marks! Who knows what I might type after finishing this lovely dark glassfull?!?!

Love Child!

Trump paid $15k to suppress the story about his love child with an employee, per Cohen testimony.

BBC News: Readers' pictures on the theme of "memory"

The BBC is featuring some interesting reader-submitted photos on its news site. I love this decisive moment picture:

Martin Gargula: "A woman makes a selfie memory, unaware of what is going on around her."

There are several more good ones at the link:

As you may already know, the BBC publishes a new theme for soliciting reader photos every few weeks. I'm looking forward to checking out more of these.

Edible Flower Mandala Salad

Oh, wow -- look what I found on Seed Savers Exchange:

Create This Salad at Home

Start with:

Bed of salad greens: varieties of lettuce, a bit of fresh basil, and arugula, all cut into small pieces.

Top with:
Beets, orange carrots, and yellow carrots, finely grated

Cucumbers, sliced and peeled

Cherry Roma tomatoes (can use any colorful heirloom tomatoes)

Feta cheese, cut into small pieces

Edible flowers: nasturtiums, calendula petals, Siberian catmint, monarda blossoms (lemon mint/bee balm) removed from their stems, and borage are ideal

(Small violas, Johnny Jump-Ups, and mustard blossoms are also suitable for salads.)

This would be great for a summer party! This makes me want to plan my whole garden just so I can make this.

When does 'Heidi' start?

Is there anything else interesting on TV tonight?

Let's not forget that Trump has committed many crimes.

He is still extremely vulnerable for multiple felonies and potentially for other treasonous actions. Even if Leopold got Rathered, even if it’s never proven that Trump told Cohen to lie to Congress, there’s plenty more to pin on him, and plenty more that is worthy of impeachment.

I know a lot of us are in a Fitzmas mood tonight, but I think there is still plenty to be optimistic about. We need to keep pressuring our Senators, especially those of us “represented” by Republican Senators, to do something about Trump’s many high crimes and misdemeanors. And don’t forget the State of New York charges that will be hung around his flabby orange neck.

Take heart, everyone, and take a deep breath. Have a nice weekend, and let’s focus on honoring Dr. King Monday. The fight resumes next week.

Atlanta Community Food Bank working to feed federal workers' families

The high demand from workers in shutdown puts Atlanta food bank 'in uncharted territory' (CNN, 1/18/2019)

A line of cars stretched across a parking lot beneath a gray sky Friday in Atlanta as employees from the Transportation Security Administration and Customs and Border Protection and their families waited for groceries from the Atlanta Community Food Bank and Antioch Baptist Church North.

"I feel pain," said Robert Timmons, a retired member of the US armed forces who said he's been working for the TSA for 16 years.

"And I feel a little remorseful, because our elected officials, who we trust to take care of business, (are) not taking care of business. And they put the suffering on the people who are working to make sure that the mission that we have is carried out."

Timmons said he's doing OK for now, thanks to his status as retired military. But the partial government shutdown -- now in its 28th day as President Donald Trump and Congress remain at an impasse over a border wall -- is hard on many of his colleagues who struggling without a paycheck.
