About Me

I am retired, now a professor emeritus at University of Louisiana at Lafayette, where I taught in the English department for 37 years. I've written 4 chapbooks and 5 full-sized books (all listed as poetry though many include other genres as well), including _Sheer Indefinite: Selected Poems, 1991-2012 (Univ. of New Orleans Press, 2012). I've also written a 500+ page bibliography of three contemporary poets: Robert Creeley, Ed Dorn, and Robert Duncan. I am writing now, both fiction and poetry, more now than ever. My first vote for President of the United States was for Dick Gregory in 1968 (Bowling Green, Ohio). Favorite quote: "It's easy to be an idealist if you don't have to mind the evidence, but no one said it was supposed to be easy" (Richard LaPauvre).

Even a broken clock can be right 50 times a day. Depends on how you break it. Come CAPTION Newt!!!!

Newt ("History is only history for a few seconds" Gingrich is saying: "Well, I'll tell you, Stephanie, back in my day we wouldn't even have dreamed of pulling a stunt like this!"

Above CAPTION was loosely based on the following Huffington Post story:

"I never knew anything I didn't already know!" Please come CAPTION Brit Hume!!

Brit ("I practice looking concerned in the mirror over three hours a day" Hume is saying, "The media is the real reason Americans blame Republicans for threatening a government shutdown. . . CNN, for instance, reported that it was primarily an effort to derail Obamacare. . . . Not only is that patently false, Bret, nothing could further from the truth! . . . The Republicans are trying to save the governmentt, which should be apparent to everyone! . . . And if it wasn't for the media . . ."

Above CAPTION was rather closely based on the following Media Matters story:

"I'm not really dumb, I just think that way." Please come CAPTION Elisabeth Hasselbeck!!!

Elisabeth ("I once thought I was having an idea, but it was only gas" Hasselbeck is saying: "Well, it turns out, Brian, that Obamacare is so terribly unpopular that healthcare.gov keeps crashing. . . That's obviously caused by irate Americans trying to give Obama a piece of their minds."

Governmental shutdown in D.C. Mental shutdown at Fox. Please come CAPTION Sean Hannity!!!

Sean ("I'll stake my reputation on it!" Hannity is saying: "Actually the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, that's the IPCC, reported the earth is cooling at an alarming rate which suggests humans are not putting enough carbon dioxide and other warming emissions into the atmosphere. . . . You just have to know how to read the charts, is all . . . If you just turn them around a bit, to get a fresher perspective, why . . . "

Above CAPTION was loosely based on the following Media Matters story:

"Can I please talk to the hand?" . . . Please come CAPTION Ted Cruz!!!!

Ted ("Consciousness is a tricky thing" Cruz is thinking: "Sh*t. . . . Obamacare goes into effect in 14 hours and will probably be one of the most popular government programs in America's history, and it was passed without a single Republican vote because we refused to have any impact on the bill, start to finish. . . Then we dubbed it 'Obamacare' cause we thought that would kill it on the vine, but now it'll go down in the books like that and make Republicans look terrible. . . . Then the government is set to shut down at the same time, and who will the American people blame for that? . . . Why the Republicans. . . . It's a terrible double whammy and will probably keep us out of power for twenty years. . . . What I want to know is, just who is responsible for all this mess? "

"Quick! . . . Ditch his phone. Grab the cards and cash!!" . . . Please come CAPTION Darrell Issa!!!

Darrell ("I always got the truth put on backward" Issa is saying: "Sharyl, that means nothing, absolutely nothing. Just because we haven't found any evidence to the contrary or anything to support the notion of missing witnesses, doesn't mean there's no scandal behind Benghazi. . . . In fact, it means precisely the opposite! . . . Who else could cover so much up, so completely and so thoroughly? . . . Whose interest does it best serve to appear to have nothing to hide? . . . If you're thinking the Obama administration, you're right on the mark. . . . Ever notice how nothing points directly at them? . . . Directly! . . . It strains one's credulity!"

Above CAPTION very loosely based on the following Media Matters story:

"Pray the Lay-Away!" . . . Please come CAPTION Michele Bachmann!!

Michele ("Every time I get a thought, I smell rubber burning" Bachmann is saying: "I'm absolutely serious, Wolf. If this law allowed to go into effect Oct. 1, within a year Obamacare will be the greatest cause of death in the nation, exceeding car fatalities, cancer, and gun deaths put together. . . . In fact, I couldn't be more serious!"

Above CAPTION was loosely based on the following story at Huffington Post:

"If it seems it's so, it ain't!" Please come CAPTION Fox's John Bolton!!!

John ("Joseph Goebbels had it easy" Bolton is saying: "It's just like I've been saying all along, Greta, the sanctions against Iran were bound to fail. . . . Now we have incontrovertible proof of their failure!!! . . . President Hassan Rouhani's recent overtures toward so-called peace is clear evidence that the Iranians do not want peace, they want the exact opposite: war. . . . So he's stringing along the gullible American President until Iran has nuclear weapons. . . . Can anything be more obvious. . . . Sanctions, as I've said all along, simply will not and cannot work! . . . I'll lay my reputation on that fact."

Above CAPTION based on he following Fox News story:

"What's a Friday without the death of sense?" Please come CAPTION Fox's Brian Kilmeade!!

Brian ("I get turned on when I lie! . . . And I like to be aroused all the time!" Kilmeade is saying: "Well it turns out we don't have to talk about the report released today in Stockholm from the U.N.'s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, or the IPCC, because we covered in detail the Non-governmental International Panel on Climate Change, or the NIPCC, two weeks ago. . . . And, of course, it was more accurate because it wasn't done by governments! . . . Once again, Fox scoops the mainstream media and all other cable news outlets. . . . Now onto the Puppy in Jersey City who dialed 911 and saved his owner's life!"

See Fox's coverage of the NIPCC report at Media Matters:

(The NIPCC, by the way, is part of the Heartland Institute, a think tank turning out lies and junk science, supported by the petroleum industry among others.)

And here's a link to today's brief but very fine CNN coverage on the real IPCC report:

"Put a little crud in your heart." Please come CAPTION Pete Santilli.

Pete (“Moderation is my game”) Santilli just finished saying: “My listeners know me as a quiet man, a moderate man, a man who speaks his mind and stands behind everything he says. . . . So when I say I desperately want to shoot Hillary Clinton in the vagina, they know I’m not joking. . . . And I’ll never say I’m joking either, . . . except when the authorities question me, of course.”
