US Sen. Cory Booker, who was in Israel during Hamas attack, describes "fear and worry"

Sen. Cory Booker, who was in Israel when Hamas attack happened, described how he sheltered with others, including children and families, following the attack.

Booker posted a video to social media after leaving the country.

“About this time yesterday, I was jogging behind me in the Old City when I got an urgent call from my chief of staff telling me to get back to the hotel as quickly as I could, that Israel was under attack,” Booker, a Democrat from New Jersey, said in the video posted on X.

“When I got back to the hotel, I joined others in the bomb shelters or the stairwells of the hotel. Frightened faces. There were children and elderly, families, many Americans. There was a sense of fear and worry, and a knowledge to many of us that there were horrific things going on around the country at that time,” he added.

Here's the latest on the fighting in Israel and Gaza.

More than 40 hours after the initial surge of armed militants across the border, Israel’s military remained mired in battles with gunmen from Gaza on Sunday evening. As the death toll climbed, leaders worldwide positioned themselves for the war ahead and civilians sought refuge from ongoing attacks.

The continued fighting came as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned of a “long and difficult war” ahead, saying in a statement that Israeli forces were moving into an “offensive phase, which will continue with neither limitations nor respite until the objectives are achieved.”

The Israeli foreign ministry said on Sunday night that 700 Israelis had been killed in the attacks. An additional 2,243 were injured, according to the health ministry.

…snip…

The Israeli military reported fighting in seven border communities and an army base, and tanks were seen crossing farmland in parts of southern Israel, heading south toward Gaza.

Pro-Palestine rally in Times Square

NEW YORK (PIX11) — A pro-Palestine rally was held in Times Square on Sunday after Hamas attacked Israel in the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, organizers said.

The demonstration kicked off near 42nd Street and Broadway at 1 p.m where there was a heavy NYPD presence at the event.

“In solidarity with the Palestinian people and their right to resist 75 years of occupation and apartheid,” the New York City chapter of Democratic Socialists said in a social media post.

Gov. Kathy Hochul spoke out against the rally, calling it “morally repugnant.”

At Twitter, the beatings will continue until morale improves...

After Deleting Twitter/X Headlines, Elon Musk Will Hide Reply, Retweet And Like Numbers

Elon Musk has a new vision for X, formerly known as Twitter: a “cleaner” looking timeline — one with less stuff on it, even if that means sacrificing basic functionality or usability in the process. First, it was headlines, now it’s deleting all visible frontpage feed data for replies, retweets and likes.

This past week, Musk followed through on a promise to delete embedded headlines and lede copy from posted article links, leaving behind only an image with a little URL in the bottom corner. One benefit, he said, was a cleaner look, another, his acolytes touted, was less clickbait headlines.

Of course in practice, the opposite is true. You can now write anything at all in the text of a post and link to a story that says something else entirely, because that context is not embedded in the tweet anymore, at least on the app itself (embeds may still not have caught up.)

And when you’re not trolling, outside of authors manually writing (real) headlines themselves in tweets, really no one who shares that link is going to take the time to do that, so it makes links close to pointless now, decreasing already bad clickthrough rates on Twitter. This reflects a previously stated desire to get people to stay on Twitter rather than click away to outside sources. Musk says instead, articles should be written directly on Twitter, something no news outlet or website will actually do

Israel cutting off electricity, fuel and goods to Gaza

Source: NBC News

Israel's government will halt the supply of electricity, fuel and goods to Gaza, according to a statement tonight from the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Netanyahu said that the "first stage" of Israel's counteroffensive against Hamas had ended, claiming that Israeli military forces had fought off the "vast majority" of Hamas militants behind the early morning incursion.

He pledged to continue counterattacks without "limitations nor respite."

"We are embarking on a long and difficult war that was forced on us by a murderous Hamas attack," he said.
