Obama Appoints Transgender Attorney Shannon Minter To White House Commission

WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama on Monday appointed transgender attorney Shannon Price Minter to the President's Commission on White House Fellowships.

Minter, who is the legal director of the National Center for Lesbian Rights, has been lead counsel in a number of legal wins for the LGBT community. He gained national attention in 2001 when he represented the lesbian partner of Diane Whipple in a wrongful death case stemming from a dog mauling. That case resulted in a landmark decision in California that extended tort claims to same-sex domestic partners.

Minter was also the lead attorney arguing before the California Supreme Court to overturn Proposition 8, a state ballot measure that banned same-sex marriage in the state. The U.S. Supreme Court in 2013 let a lower court decision go into effect that struck down the ban.

"I am confident that these experienced and hardworking individuals will help us tackle the important challenges facing America, and I am grateful for their service," Obama said in a statement, of Minter and a handful of other new nominees. "I look forward to working with them.”

“I am deeply honored to serve on the President’s Commission on White House Fellowships, which provides a unique opportunity for new leaders to gain a firsthand experience of our nation’s government," Minter said in a statement. "As a transgender man, I am especially grateful to President Obama for his commitment to building a government that reflects the full diversity of our country and for supporting equal opportunity for all people.”

Mahalo to Shannon Minter and to President Obama for appointing him to the White House Commission!

Why doesn't the WaPo ask African Americans involved in My Brother's Keeper if Obama has made CHANGE?

Youth Guidance: President Obama Invites BAM Program Back To The White House

President Obama has invited Youth Guidance’s Becoming a Man (B.A.M.) program back to Washington D.C. to kick off a new White House initiative called “My Brother’s Keeper.” Three B.A.M. students from Hyde Park High School, along with B.A.M. Lead Supervisor, Marshaun Bacon, and Youth Guidance Board Member, Stuart Taylor, will visit the White House Thursday and Friday. The President’s initiative will support young male minorities by bringing foundations and companies together to find ways to keep young men in school and out of the criminal justice system.

President Obama speaks at the launch of the My Brother’s Keeper Alliance May 4, 2015

And, that's what he's said he's going to do when he leaves office, too..

"Obama’s Retirement Plan: Help Black Kids"

After he leaves the White House, friends say the president will return to his passion: helping African Americans through his My Brother's Keeper Alliance.

What is in Barack Obama’s heart? Underneath that cool exterior, it can be hard to tell. When he leaves office in 2017, he will be a fit 55-year-old with decades of productive life likely ahead of him. How will he use them?

I went to the Bronx on Monday with a hunch that Obama was about to tell us; and I wasn’t disappointed.

"Hello, America.. I am Minnesota's Democratic Governor, Mark Dayton.."

"Hillary Clinton is the most qualified person to be the next president of the United States."

Let me the first.. Thanks Obama! Mahalo EarlG!

Just a Reminder that the Gov of the "One of the USA's Best Economies" Supports Hillary4President!

"What happens when you tax the rich and raise the minimum wage? Meet one of USA's best economies"

During his first four years in office, Gov. Dayton raised the state income tax from 7.85 to 9.85 percent on individuals earning over $150,000, and on couples earning over $250,000 when filing jointly -- a tax increase of $2.1 billion. He's also agreed to raise Minnesota's minimum wage to $9.50 an hour by 201s8, and passed a state law guaranteeing equal pay for women.

We all know that equal pay for women is a slippery slope that leads to voting rights and the loss of corsets and hoop skirts. Mark Dayton's approach of making people who can afford to pay, pay, helped eliminate the deficit. Raising the minimum wage gave more people money to spend. Businesses like money and they like people who have money to spend.

Gov. Dayton didn't accomplish all of these reforms by shrewdly manipulating people -- this article describes Dayton's astonishing lack of charisma and articulateness. He isn't a class warrior driven by a desire to get back at the 1 percent -- Dayton is a billionaire heir to the Target fortune. It wasn't just a majority in the legislature that forced him to do it -- Dayton had to work with a Republican-controlled legislature for his first two years in office. And unlike his Republican neighbor to the east, Gov. Dayton didn't assert his will over an unwilling populace by creating obstacles between the people and the vote -- Dayton actually created an online voter registration system, making it easier than ever for people to register to vote.

Clinton’s Minnesota campaign kicks off with Dayton appearance, sign-up sheets

Dayton, Smith backing Clinton

And they gave Gov. Mark Dayton and Lt. Gov. Tina Smith a huge, standing ovation when they showed up.

“This is more fun than we’ve had all day,” Smith said to Dayton as they stood in front of the cheering people. The governor, who has been a Clinton supporter since sitting next to her in the U.S. Senate, agreed.

Dayton urged people to get involved now and stay involved. “You haven’t lived until you’ve gone door-knocking in Iowa in January,” he said.

He also warned the people that the campaign against “their” candidate will be harsh. “The character assassination, the money and the lies would knock down just about anybody so we’ve got to stand together,” he said.

mahalo for your OP, she!

".it's manifestly sexist. It's a common refrain but one that, when carefully considered, is fraught

with messy gender politics and wholly unfair demagoguery."

Exactly! Well said, Adam Johnson.

It's so wrong of Gov O'Malley and makes me think less of him.. It's not something then Senator Obama would have done. He knows it's not true.

Thank you, Justin!

Yes, it was how SKP "elaborated" on it, thank you! Unfortunately after the decision was made..

there were tons of Bernie's Supporters who were spinning for SKP as fast as they could and throwing out the most convoluted excuses imaginable..

"it wasn't directed at Hillary" to "Admins are biased" to "he was only joking.." "he was ignorant as to what it meant", etc etc

I do not at all in any way blame those who were taking the lame excuses to task and standing up for themselves.

I wouldn't be posting about it so much if there weren't all these posts speculating about "DU's Reputation if they didn't let him back in" There was an "appreciation" thread for him late last night that got locked.. but before it did it was another flame war. Seems not everybody did "appreciate" him.. and it wasn't just his slur at Hillary.

The aforementioned Gun Trolling was discussed with disgust. What about DU's "Reputation" when SKP was posting appreciation for big Guns when Sandy Hook happened?
