Light pollution is altering plant and animal behaviour

March 27, 2018 by Gareth Willmer, From Horizon Magazine, Horizon: The EU Research & Innovation Magazine

"The negative consequences of light pollution are as unknown by the population as those of smoking in the (19)80s," said Prof. Corcho. "It's still a very difficult problem to understand. Light pollution does not have the same immediate effects over animals as other forms of pollution."

Regulation

Prof. Corcho said that one of STARS4ALL's main aims this year is to run a petition on its website to ask for more overarching regulation to avoid light pollution at an EU level. STARS4ALL will collect signatures from citizens and hopes to present the petition in Brussels by the end of the year.

He says the good news is that there are easy fixes. "There are good technology options. For instance, there are types of lamps that could be used that are both respectful to the environment in terms of light pollution and at the same time as energy-efficient as white LEDs." He cites PC amber LEDs, for example.

If we move to solve these issues, there might well be an added bonus for us all. "As an indirect result… our recommendations for public lighting may result in having more populated places where we can see more and more stars in our sky," said Prof. Corcho.

Unarmed man with pants down fatally shot by Harris County deputy

Video obtained by the Houston Chronicle captures the killing of an apparently unarmed man who was shot by a Harris County Sheriff's Office deputy in the Greater Greenspoint area Thursday.

The Houston Police Department confirmed Friday that Danny Ray Thomas, 34, died after the deputy -- who has not been named -- fired one shot at him around 1 p.m. in the 17600 block of Imperial Valley Road.

Sheriff's Office spokesman Jason Spencer said Thursday that no weapon was recovered at the scene.

Worlds last male northern white rhino, Sudan, age 45, has died.

Sudan will be remembered for his unusually memorable life. In the 1970s, he escaped extinction of his kind in the wild when he was moved to Dvůr Králové Zoo. Throughout his existence, he significantly contributed to survival of his species as he sired two females.

“We on Ol Pejeta are all saddened by Sudan’s death. He was a great ambassador for his species and will be remembered for the work he did to raise awareness globally of the plight facing not only rhinos, but also the many thousands of other species facing extinction as a result of unsustainable human activity. One day, his demise will hopefully be seen as a seminal moment for conservationists world wide,” said Richard Vigne, Ol Pejeta’s CEO.

The only hope for the preservation of this subspecies now lies in developing in vitro fertilisation (IVF) techniques using eggs from the two remaining females, stored northern white rhino semen from males and surrogate southern white rhino females.

GOP Rep. Martha McSally Caught Posting Fake Compliments to Her Own Facebook Account

On Sunday afternoon, Republican Representative Martha McSally posted an uncontroversial and innocuous status update regarding Arizonans’ service during the Vietnam War.

Quite a bit more controversially, however, McSally–or her social media director–immediately moved to post the first comment on the update in an apparent bid to highlight some pro-McSally sock-puppetry.

Usually, when a campaign staffer wants to make it look like constituents love their representative more than they actually do, said campaign staffer will switch over from their campaign’s official social media account to the fake sock-puppet account. That didn’t happen in this case.

Instead, Rep. Martha McSally made the following comment on Rep. Martha McSally’s Facebook post: “Great video quality! Thank you for your service!”

John Oliver Trolls Vice President Mike Pence With Gay Childrens Book of His Pet Bunny

The ‘Last Week Tonight’ host created a competing children’s book about the vice president’s pet bunny rabbit, Marlon Bundo, with all proceeds going to two LGBT organizations.

On Sunday night, John Oliver trolled the heck out of Vice President Mike Pence—or “whatever the exact opposite of a ‘silver fox’ is.”

On Monday, the vice president’s family will be releasing Marlon Bundo’s Day in the Life of the Vice President, a children’s book told from the perspective of their pet rabbit, Marlon Bundo. And so, as a “fuck you” to Pence, the British comedian decided to release his own Marlon Bundo children’s book on Sunday night.

“It turns out, in a complete coincidence, we also wrote a book about Mike Pence’s rabbit that is also being published. In fact, while his is out tomorrow, ours is being released right now,” Oliver announced on his HBO program.
