Watch Porsche Shred the Nuburgring Lap Record with a 5:19.55! [Video]

Watch Porsche Shred the Nürburgring Lap Record with a 5:19.55!
To show you how mind-bendingly quick this is, we wrote this story in the same amount of time.

With its 5:19.55 lap, Porsche has absolutely crushed the course record at the 12.94-mile Nürburgring Nordschleife in its 919 Hybrid Evo endurance race car. To celebrate, we’re going to write this story covering the achievement in that amount of time, just to give you an idea of how brief it is.

The previous lap record, which had stood for 35 years, was 6:11.13, set by Stefan Bellof in a Rothmans Porsche 956C. Porsche’s 919 Hybrid Evo, modified from its race-compliant specification with updated aerodynamics, tires, and powertrain calibrations, shattered Bellof’s time by an insane 51.58 seconds. Which is just about how much time we have left on our clock at this point. The 919 lap was driven by five-time Nürburgring 24 Hours winner Timo Bernhard, and he averaged 145.3 mph. Think about that. Damn, we’re down to 30 seconds.

Porsche 919 Hybrid Evo Nurburgring Fastest Record Lap

The Porsche 919 Evo Just Obliterated the Nurburgring Record With a 5:19.55 Lap Time

That's 51.58 seconds faster than Bellof's time, which is almost hard to believe. Onboard footage from Bernhard's lap, which you can see below, doesn't even look like real-life, but it is.

Unlike Bellof's 1983 record, which was set during qualifying for the Nürburgring 1000km, this record saw Porsche rent out the track just for itself with the company using a car not homologated for any race series. The 919 Evo is the same car that beat Lewis Hamilton's 2017 pole at Spa Francorchamps earlier this year. It's basically built to set lap records like this. To send off its three-time Le Mans-winning 919 after it was retired from sports-car racing, Porsche threw out the LMP1 rulebook and made a high-downforce, high-horsepower monster.

Puerto Rico is "broken" 100 days after hurricane Maria and Trump is no help, locals say

“He has failed the moral imperative that any leader of the free world should hold at the highest level,” San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz said about the recovery efforts.

“All he needs to do is simple: do his job. I think the world has seen a commander in chief unable to command,” she said.

Cruz added that she and her fellow Puerto Ricans have been “fighting every day” to move past the wreckage of the storm. But the messes that remain on the island have stalled many major relief efforts, and even the attempted recovery continues to bring new and overwhelming challenges.
