Feds Halt New Drilling on Pipeline After Spill Into Ohio Wetland

Federal regulators have blocked new drilling on an Ohio natural gas pipeline owned by the same Texas-based company that was behind the controversial Dakota Access project, after millions of gallons of a drilling lubricant spilled into wetlands.

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission on Wednesday ordered Rover Pipeline to stop new drilling in the $4.2 billion project until it addresses environmental concerns, after the company spilled 2 million gallons of a nontoxic bentonite mud used as drilling lubricant in Stark County.

"The action taken Wednesday by FERC is a step in the right direction," Ohio Environmental Protection Agency spokesman James Lee told NBC News. The spill could choke fish and plants, the state agency said.

The Ohio EPA last Friday ordered the pipeline company to pay at least $431,000 for multiple water and air pollution violations that occurred across the state.

Lee said the state agency has recorded 18 pipeline-related incidents that affected 11 counties over the past two months, ranging from open burning violations, bentonite mud spills and water pollution. At least eight broke state laws and more are under review, according to the Ohio EPA.

Congressional Progressive Caucus Unveils The People’s Budget: A Roadmap for the Resistance

“It’s one thing to oppose President Trump and expose his broken promises to workers, but it’s also important to lay out a positive path forward,” said Rep. Pocan. “The Congressional Progressive Caucus’s budget is a plan to actually help working Americans who have felt left behind by an economy rigged against them. Our budget is a roadmap for the resistance, investing in the progressive priorities and economic, kitchen table issues that matter to real people: infrastructure to create jobs; education to help our kids reach their full potential; and access to affordable health care.”

Colbert has no regrets: Late-night host defends controversial Trump Putin c*ck holster joke

CBS host Stephen Colbert on Wednesday defended his controversial “Late Night” joke that ignited calls for his resignation from CBS, insisting while he doesn’t “regret” his words, they “were cruder than they needed to be.”

“Welcome to ‘The Late Show.’ I’m your host, Stephen Colbert,” Colbert said on Wednesday’s show, Variety reports. “Still? I am still the host? I’m still the host!!”

Colbert was referring to renewed calls to #FireColbert, a hashtag that gained increased attention after the “Late Show” host’s opening Monday night, wherein he defended fellow CBS host John Dickerson against Trump’s attacks by declaring, “Sir, the only thing your mouth is good for is being Vladimir Putin’s c*ck holster” (“sir,” in this case, referring to U.S. president Donald J. Trump).

Colbert’s remarks prompted calls for CBS to fire the beloved host. The host addressed those calls, arguing Trump has a much more powerful platform than he.

“Now, if you saw my monologue Monday, you know that I was a little upset at Donald Trump for insulting a friend of mine,” Colbert continued. “So at the end of that monologue I had a few choice insults for the president in return. I don’t regret that. He, I believe, can take care of himself. I have jokes; he has the launch codes. So, it’s a fair fight.”

Conservationists sue to halt fracking in Ohio's only national forest

(Reuters) - Four conservation groups on Tuesday sued the U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management in an attempt to halt fracking plans in a portion of Ohio's only national forest.

The suit, filed in U.S. District Court in Columbus, argues that the federal agencies failed to sufficiently analyze risks to watersheds, public health, climate and endangered species including Indiana bats, before auctioning 670 acres (270 hectares) in December of the Wayne National Forest in southeast Ohio for eventual hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, of underground shale.

The groups are seeking an injunction to halt oil and gas leasing and development until a new assessment can be made. Fracking involves injecting water, sand and chemicals into wells to fracture shale and release natural gas and oil.

U.S. Forest Service spokeswoman Babete Anderson declined to comment, citing pending litigation. Bureau of Land Management officials could not be reached immediately for comment.
