Automakers to White House: Climate change is real

WASHINGTON -- Automakers urged the White House to cooperate with California officials in a coming rewrite of vehicle efficiency standards, saying "climate change is real."

The plea came in a May 3 letter to the White House's Office of Management and Budget from the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, the industry's leading trade group. It said carmakers "strongly support" continued alignment between federal mileage standards and those set by California. General Motors, Ford Motor Co., Daimler and nine other carmakers are members of the alliance.

"Automakers remain committed to increasing fuel efficiency requirements, which yield everyday fuel savings for consumers while also reducing emissions -- because climate change is real and we have a continuing role in reducing greenhouse gases and improving fuel efficiency," David Schwietert, executive vice president of federal government relations at the alliance, wrote in the letter, which was made public Monday.

The letter came roughly a week before President Donald Trump signaled he was open to talks with California on mileage standards. The direction came after the administration's April ruling that the Obama administration standards for 2022-25 model years were too aggressive and needed to be eased.

Officials from the state have pledged to fight a Trump-led rollback, setting up a potential messy legal battle and the risk of different mileage requirements in California and 12 additional states that follow its rules.

McDonald's Straw Dilemma

The fast-food chain’s shareholders will consider a proposal for the restaurant to come up with plastic straw alternatives.

May 23, 2018
OAK BRIDGE, Ill. – The backlash against plastic straws will gain momentum this week when McDonald’s shareholders consider a proposal to look into alternatives for its restaurants around the world, USA Today reports. The fast-food industry has been hit hard from environmental groups and others railing against its overuse of hard-to-recycle packaging, which includes plastic foam cups, boxes, carryout bags, trays, plastic wrap and plastic straws.

McDonald’s says it works hard to lower waste and increase recycling, including its pledge to discontinue use of foam cups by the end of this year. However, the company recommends shareholders not vote for the straw study measure.

“We continue to work to find a more sustainable solution for plastic straws globally,” McDonald’s said in a statement. “In the meantime, we have adopted compostable straws in certain markets to meet regulations while we work with packaging experts to develop a planet-friendly, cost-effective answer for all McDonald’s restaurants.”

SumOfUs has garnered close to half a million names on an online petition asking McDonald’s to get rid of plastic straws. “Straws are an important issue because, for the most part, we can do without them,” said Sondhya Gupta, a senior campaigner for SumOfUs. “You just get them popped into a drink without thinking about them. They are small and they are light, so they are difficult to recycle.”

The world agreed to ban this ozone killer years ago--but it looks like someone is making more

CFC-11 isn't leaving the atmosphere as quickly as it should.

The ozone layer has made an impressive recovery in the last 30 years, but that has never been a foolproof plan. A new study published in the journal Nature on Wednesday illustrates a shocking spike in emissions for an ozone-depleting chemical banned by international treaty decades ago. The culprit who is generating this pollutant is still unknown and at large.

“We were shocked, no doubt,” says Stephen Montzka, a scientist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and lead author of the new study. “We couldn’t understand how on Earth emissions would be increasing when production had been zero for so long.”

The chemical, CFC-11, is part of a class of substances called chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) once hailed as a pinnacle of 20th century industrial chemistry. CFCs showed up in refrigerators, aerosol cans, and solvents of all kind. They were everywhere, like some sort of miracle compound specifically designed for modern consumerism.

Then scientists started realizing that CFCs were widening a gaping hole in the Earth’s ozone layer, an essential shield for life on this planet against the sun’s harmful ultraviolet radiation. CFCs’ chlorine molecules initiate ozone-destroying chemical reactions and allow UV radiation through to the surface. The world came together in 1987 to sign the Montreal Protocol, a pact that effectively banned all ozone-depleting substances, including CFCs. Signed by every nation in the U.N., “the Montreal Protocol is famous for being the world’s most successful environmental treaty,” says Durwood Zaelke, the founder and president of the Institute for Governance and Sustainable Development. “It’s done more than any other treaty to protect the climate. It’s kept the climate system from disaster.”

That’s part of the reason the new Nature study is so jarring: it’s a clear indication of the treaty’s violation. Whether that’s intentional or accidental is still unclear, but it nevertheless puts the Montreal Protocol’s parties on high alert.
