Zinke expands hunting, fishing at two Maine national wildlife refuges

WASHINGTON — Fishermen and hunters will have increased opportunities to pursue those activities at two Maine national wildlife refuges during the 2018-2019 seasons as the result of action announced Friday by U.S. Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke.

The Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge in Baring and the Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge in Wells both were on the list of public lands where hunting and fishing will be expanded.

The move expands existing migratory game bird, upland game and big game hunting at Moosehorn, and further opens up existing white-tailed deer and wild turkey hunting at the Rachel Carson site.

Zinke will open more than 251,000 acres to new or expanded hunting and fishing opportunities at 30 national wildlife refuges across the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s National Wildlife Refuge System. This will now bring the number of units where the public may hunt to 377 and the number where fishing is permitted to 312.

In addition to opening up more acres to fishing and hunting, the move takes steps to simplify regulations to more closely match state hunting and fishing regulations.

Ford recalls two million trucks over seat belt fire risk

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Ford Motor Co (F.N) said on Thursday it would recall 2 million F-150 pickup trucks in North America because of a seat belt problem that could generate excessive sparks and cause fires.

The second-largest U.S. automaker said it received 17 reports of smoke or fire in the United States and six in Canada but was not aware of any injuries.

During a crash, a device called a pretensioner uses an explosive charge to lock the seat belt in place. The company said the device may generate excessive sparks.

Ford will fix the problem for free and said in a securities filing the recall would cost about $140 million. The company said the cost would be reflected in third-quarter earnings but Ford left unchanged its guidance for full-year 2018 adjusted earnings.

The recall covers 2015-2018 Ford F-150 Regular Cab and SuperCrew Cab vehicles in North America for driver and front passenger seat-belt pretensioners.

Strangers donate to St. Clair Shores senior who can't afford gas

St. Clair Shores — She couldn't fill up her gas tank. Now strangers are rallying to a senior citizen, fueling a fundraising account to help her out.

The effort started with a gas station attendant and a St. Clair Shores police officer, who learned that a woman who is known only as Delores couldn't afford gasoline on Labor Day.

The woman drove up to a gas station on Martin Road and Little Mack Avenue in a borrowed 2005 Cadillac DeVille and gave the attendant, Seth Kazz, $3 for the gas.

The St. Clair Shores officer was standing behind her, heard the amount of gas she was paying for. He saw that she was using a cane and struggling to get back to her car.

"He went outside and told her to sit in the car as he would pump the gas for her," Kazz said. "After a few minutes of getting to know one another, he realized she was really struggling and didn’t have any gas or money left."

The officer returned to Kazz with $20 from his own pocket and filled up her tank. The woman told the officer she was struggling to pay her bills after her husband died.

"It really helped her. She would of most likely ended up running out of gas," Kazz said. "Then we thought: What can we do to help this lady? I was going to put a jar on the counter with her story, but I thought it wouldn't be enough."

Instead, Kazz said, he set up a GoFundMe account.
