Mom Faked Toddler's Cancer, Let Him Have Opioids and Raised $40,000 on His Behalf

Source: TIME

(CINCINNATI) — A woman has been accused of pretending to be a doctor and falsely claiming her preschool-age son had terminal cancer so he could receive unnecessary hospital care and opioids.

A Hamilton County prosecutor told jurors on Tuesday at the trial of Monika Burgett that she convinced doctors at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center that she was a doctor while they cared for her 3-year-old son.

Assistant prosecutor Anne Flanagan said Burgett also used the GoFundMe fundraising website to raise $40,000 on her son's behalf. Flanagan said Burgett had the boy's eyebrows and head shaved and then took photos of him to post on the site.

GoFundMe will issue refunds to people who gave money to Burgett if it turns out she misused the fundraising campaign and scammed them, a site spokesman said.

Ex-Tulsa Officer Betty Shelby, Acquitted in Fatal Shooting, to Work for Sheriffs Office

Source: NBC News

TULSA, Okla. — A white former Tulsa police officer who resigned after being acquitted of manslaughter in the fatal shooting of an unarmed black man is going to work for the sheriff's office in a neighboring county.

Rogers County Sheriff Scott Walton told reporters in Tulsa that Betty Shelby will work for his office. He did not say what her duties will be, but he has scheduled a news conference for Thursday morning.

Shelby, 43, was found not guilty in May of manslaughter in the September shooting death of Terence Crutcher. Shelby was on patrol Sept. 16, 2016, when she shot Crutcher as he stood near his SUV in the middle of a Tulsa street.

She returned to the Tulsa Police Department in an administrative position, but resigned in July, saying she felt isolated from other officers. Walton is a former Tulsa police officer and a vocal supporter of Shelby as she awaited trial.

I guess this is the Tulsa Police way of saying that even they knew Shelby fucked up and it was an unlawful shooting... I'm guessing her ass will be glued to a chair and she'll run out the clock with clerical duties until her pension kicks in...

California Crops Rot as Immigration Crackdown Creates Farmworker Shortage

Vegetable prices may be going up soon, as a shortage of migrant workers is resulting in lost crops in California.

Farmers say they're having trouble hiring enough people to work during harvest season, causing some crops to rot before they can be picked. Already, the situation has triggered losses of more than $13 million in two California counties alone, according to NBC News.

The ongoing battle about U.S. immigration policies is blamed for the shortage. The vast majority of California's farm workers are foreign born, with many coming from Mexico. However, the PEW Research Center reports more Mexicans are leaving the U.S. than coming here.
To make the jobs more attractive, farmers are offering salaries above minimum wage, along with paid time off and 401(k) plans, but even that's not proving enough.

It's unclear exactly how widespread the labor shortage is for farmers throughout the country, which would have a bigger impact on prices consumers pay. Ultimately, drought and flooding have a more significant impact on farms. Low oil prices could also offset any impact of the worker shortage.

I guess the #MAGA crowd who was so worried about their economic future is too good to pick crops?
