The Russian "Treasure Ship" Was Likely a Fraud Meant to Boost a Cryptocurrency Scam

A South Korean company that announced it had found more than a hundred billion dollars in gold treasure in a Russian warship is under investigation for possible fraud. The gold apparently does not exist and the company allegedly planned to use news of the treasure to boost a new cryptocurrency.
Last month, the news broke that the Shinil Group, a South Korean company, had discovered the 100-year-old wreck of an Imperial Russian Navy cruiser, the Dmitri Donskoi. A survival of the naval battle of Tsushima, the Donskoi was scuttled off the cost of Ulleung island in the Sea of Japan. Shinil claimed that the ship went down carrying 200 tons of gold coins and 5,000 boxes of gold bars being evacuated from Russia.
Shinil’s explorers claimed to have seen a “treasure box” in the wreckage, although no gold was recovered. Shinil announced that it would apply to salvage the gold, of which the Russian government was entitled to half. It would donate ten percent of the remainder to infrastructure projects benefiting both North and South Korea. Another ten percent would be transferred to holders of the upcoming Shinil Gold Coin cryptocurrency.
Now, claims of the gold are unraveling. The company adjusted the projected value of the gold again and again, and in a filing made with the South Korean government ultimately estimated the treasure onboard amounted to just a million dollars. That’s a far cry from the original $130 billion. The Shinil Group has also shut down and closed its website. The company is also looking into whether Shinil used the news to influence the South Korean stock market.
As for Shinil Gold Coin...it’s nowhere to be seen and the website is down.

Man who tied up, sexually assaulted 14-year-old girl will serve no jail time

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. — A former Virginia high school student who sexually assaulted a 14-year-old girl will serve no active prison time, a judge ruled Wednesday. Logan Michael Osborn, 19, pleaded guilty in September to the charge of having carnal knowledge of the girl. At the time, he was sentenced to 10 years in prison, with eight years suspended.
In early January, Chesterfield Circuit Court Judge T.J. Hauler decided to pause the two-year term, saying that he wanted more time to review the case. On Wednesday, he declined to reinstate the original sentence.
“The family is disappointed that the defendant will not serve any active incarceration for the brutal attack on the victim,” Chesterfield prosecutor Erin Barr told the Richmond Times-Dispatch. “They do not believe justice has been served and shared concern for community safety and future potential victims.”
Osborn, then a student at Cosby High School, sexually assaulted the 14-year-old girl after they attended a school play together. Prosecutors said Osborn went on a walk with the girl, who didn't know the Cosby campus, and when the path ended at a fence, Osborn became aggressive.

The world is burning with the fires of illiberal populism. The flames take on different shapes in different nations. There is Trump’s lurid xenophobia in America, Brexit in Britain, a right-wing government in Poland, a “People's Party” smoldering in both Denmark and Austria, Marine le Pen’s Front National in France, Geert Wilders’s “blond beastliness” in the Netherlands, and the Kultur-warriors of Germany’s “Alternative für Deutschland.”
But in the Canadian wilderness, the fire isn’t catching yet.
For decades, Canada has sustained exceptionally high levels of immigration without facing an illiberal populist groundswell. It is the most inclusive country in the world in its attitudes toward immigrants, religion, and sexuality, according to a 2018 survey by the polling company Ipsos. In a ranking of the most important Canadian symbols and values, its citizens put “multiculturalism” right next to the national anthem—and just behind their flag. In the U.S., those supportive of multiculturalism say they’re the least patriotic; in Canada, patriotism and multiculturalism go together like fries and cheese curds.
To be clear, Canada has not discovered some magical elixir to eradicate intolerance, racism, or inequality, all of which are present in the nation of 36 million. Its indigenous communities, which have endured centuries of brutalization and discrimination, often live under conditions that are still described as “third world.” And the country is not equally welcoming to all newcomers. But at a time when anti-immigrant sentiment and populist politics are sweeping across Europe and America, Canada stands apart.
What’s Canada’s secret? A blend of imperial history, bizarre and desolate geography, and provincial politics have forged something unique in the Great White North. Countries now buckling under the strain of xenophobic populism should take note.
