Wordle tips: How to master the game, according to a linguistics expert

It’s the game that social media can’t get enough of, but we can’t help but wonder: should you really start Wordle with the same word every day?

What are the best starting words for Wordle?
Some users swear by starting each game with the same word. Usually vowel-heavy, some popular starting words include ‘ADIEU’, ‘STEAK’, ‘TREAD’, ‘TABLE’ and ‘AUDIO’.

But is this really the best tactic? Murphy, a Wordle fan who plays the game daily in three different languages, says she varies the words she starts with – but they are always consonant-heavy.

“Consonants are more informative than vowels – there are more of them to knock out of contention,” she explains. “Things like ‘CLAMP’ or ‘DRINK’, which have either an ‘L’ or an ‘R’ and either an ‘M’ or an ‘N’.

“Whereas if you guess something vowel-heavy like ‘ALIEN’ at the start, you might learn that the word has an ‘A’ and an ‘E’, but a lot of words have those two vowels – you haven’t ruled as many words out.

Consonants are more informative than vowels
“I like using ‘L’, ‘R’, ‘N’, and ‘M’ (linguists call them sonorant consonants) early because they combine easily with other consonants. Once I know that a word with a ‘P’ doesn’t have an ‘L’, for instance, I’ve ruled out a lot of the possible ‘P’ words.”

I was in the Band room. We were practicing for the Thanksgiving Day football game.

Someone came in and told our Director. He in turn told us. There was a shocked reaction from everyone. Some crying, others just frozen in disbelief. After a spell the director asked us to play the Navy hymn "Eternal Father, Strong to Save" in honor of President Kennedy. It was difficult to get through but we did. It was a Friday and the following Thursday, Thanksgiving, we played it at halftime, the stands were hushed.

It's a day etched in my memory as it is with millions.

I post the Hymn here in JFK's Memory.

Thanks for the resource link. I have descendants involved in the trials.

William and Joanna (Blessing)Towne immigrated from Great Yarmouth England settling in Salem Ma in 1635. They are my 10th great grandparents.

They had 8 children; Rebecca, John, Susan, Edmund, Jacob, Mary, Joseph and Sarah.

Edmund is our family's direct descendant.

Witchcraft trials.........

Joanna Blessing Towne was accused of witchcraft, but never brought to trial.

Rebecca married Francis Nurse and was hanged as a witch on July 16, 1692.

Mary married Issac Esty (Easty, Estey, Eastick, Eastie, or Estye ) and was hanged as a witch September 19,1692

Sarah was sentenced to prison.

The PBS video, "Three Sovereigns for Sarah" is based on their trial.

Synopsis
This is a true story based on transcripts of the Salem Witch Trials. Sarah (Vanessa Redgrave) and her two sisters are put on trial for suspicion of witchcraft. While her sisters are hanged, Sarah is sentenced to a prison term to be served in a box barely large enough for her to lie down in. When she is released, her family name is cleared and all she is given for all she has suffered are three gold sovereigns- coin of the realm at the time.

Abby Williams, the preacher's niece, starts getting into fortune telling and such illegal activities, as taught to her by the slave Tituba. Other local girls get into it, and then start acting strange. Abby and the girls eventually start to name local people as 'witches' and blame their sicknesses on witchcraft. Hundreds are accused and sent to jail, though there are many who doubt the truth of the accusations. Among these are three sisters, Mary, Rebecca, and Sarah. All are kept in jail for quite some time, until Mary and Rebecca are found guilty, though they pleaded innocent. They are hanged, and due to over crowding, Sarah is sent to a farm until her hearing. She is kept in utter isolation in a chicken coop, getting very sick and lonely, until family comes to save her. The madness is over, though the clever girls, along with one 'afflicted' mother, first succeeded in giving enough 'evidence' so that 19 people were hanged on the count of witchcraft, and one was pressed to death. The story is told to a court 10 years later by Sarah, wanting to clear the family name. Though they can not immediately decide on guilt, or give her compensation, the three judges do give Sarah 3 symbolic sovereigns, one for each of the lives that had suffered.

Need a lot of supernatural belief to appreciate the plot.

****SPOILERISH****

To me it was an intriguing relationship series until the end. Didn't get all the mind travel. Thought the ending was sick and a lazy way to wrap up a series of complex relationships. Was sitting there at the end saying, you've got to be kidding me.

If someone is coming to your house just make sure he's in a room with the door closed.

It sounds as if he knows his way home and will eventfully make his way back. But there's always the chance he could get hurt, hit by a car or maybe someone else takes him in.

My heart was broken when I had my first cat. He stayed in the house, but in the morning he'd want to go out. Rarely out for longer than 1/2 an hour. Would always come back and sit by the back porch screen door. Well one morning he didn't come back before I was ready to leave for work. So I propped open the screen so he could get back on the porch and left a bowl of food and water. I fully expected to come home from work and find him curled up on one of the porch chair. Well he wasn't. For weeks I left that porch door open and at night turned on the porch light. But he never returned. Several months later I was transferred. Had to sell the house and relocate. I felt I was abandoning him. I swear, as I drove away from my house for the last time I saw Spooky sitting on the hillside behind my house. I turned my car around and drove back into the driveway, got out and ran behind the house. He was no where to be seen. Was it him? A ghost? Or my imagination? I'll never know. But I loved that cat. He'd curl up in my lap and sleep on my pillow at the top of my head. I've never forgot him.

So point of story, I've never let another cat out of the house.
