TX cop gets12 yrs in Atatiana Jefferson shooting
A former Texas police officer was sentenced to nearly 12 years in prison Tuesday following his manslaughter conviction for shooting Atatiana Jefferson in her own home in 2019.
Aaron Dean, the 38-year-old White former Fort Worth police officer, had faced up to 20 years in prison for killing Jefferson, a 28-year-old Black woman.
Dean, in a gray suit, stood in court and showed no emotion as the sentence was read. Jeffersons relatives read impact statements after the term of 11 years, 10 months and 12 days in prison was announced.
My sister did not do anything wrong, said Ashley Carr, Jeffersons sister. She was in her home, which should have been the safest place for her to be and yet turned out to be the most dangerous. She was murdered and, as her big sister, I live every day with the pain that I could not do my job and protect her.
Carr said she pitied Dean.
Not because of the punishment you have received for your crime, she told Dean in court. You and I both know that is insufficient. I pity your ignorance
You do not know enough to be ashamed. Youre not self aware enough to understand your responsibility for this evil act.

Trump NFTs Tanking as Hype Dies, Floor Price Down 70%
What a surprise.
Donald Trumps first official NFT collection was the talk of the crypto world late last week, captivating Twitter and late night TV in the process. But after prices and trading volume surged over the weekend, both metrics have fallen sharply as the hype around the disgraced former U.S. presidents project is apparently fading.
Trumps digital trading cards, which are minted on Ethereum scaling network Polygon, peaked on Saturday, December 17 with over $3.5 million worth of trading volume, per data from CryptoSlam. Sales price rose even higher on Sunday, with the NFTsselling for an average of just over $680 apiece, although total volume fell to nearly $1.95 million for the day.
On Monday, however, day-over-day trading dropped 57% to about $836,000 worth of ETH, with the average sale price falling to about $466. Today, the cheapest available Trump NFT up for sale on leading marketplace OpenSea is listed at just 0.21 ETH, or about $255.
Trump launched his digital trading card NFTs last Thursday, with 44,000 of the NFTs selling for $99 apiece in the primary sale. Buyers were incentivized by the possibility of winning a meet-and-greet or dinner with the former president, amid other potential perks. Another 1,000 NFTs were kept back by the projects creators, for a total supply of 45,000.
Despite widespread mockery and criticism of the projecteven from some of Trumps own supportersthe project sold out within 24 hours and fueled secondary market demand. Since then, the project has racked up over $8.7 million worth of secondary trades.
Momentum peaked over the weekend, with the floor priceor cheapest listed NFThitting 0.84 ETH (about $990) on Saturday. Prices rose and fell in a volatile market ahead of the NFTs being skewered on NBCs late-night comedy show, Saturday Night Live. Just three days later, the floor price has fallen 74% when measured in USD.

SC man opened door to J6 rioters gets 3 years in prison
A South Carolina man who opened a door to Jan. 6 Capitol rioters and has since renounced former President Donald Trumps false allegations of a stolen 2020 election was sentenced Monday to three years in federal prison.
George Tenney III, 36, of Anderson County was sentenced by U.S. Judge Thomas Hogan, who said he could not ignore the facts of this riot. Tenneys sentence was one of the stiffest handed down to date of any of the 19 people from South Carolina charged in the U.S. Capitol riots.
Evidence from the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, captured on surveillance tapes, showed that Tenney had not only grappled briefly with officers several times but pushed open a door that allowed nearly 50 other rioters to enter the Capitol in the initial stages of the riot.
Once in the building, some of those 50 rioters went on to fight with police, federal prosecutor Alexis Loeb told the judge. She had urged the judge to give Tenney four years in prison.
Toward the end of the 80-minute hearing, held in a courtroom in Washington, Tenney wept as he told the judge that he had been caught up in various postings on social media that enveloped him in fear and anger and made him think his children were in danger.
In a letter Tenney wrote to the judge, he went further, saying the former president had spread lies about a stolen election that caused him to do what he did. The letter was made public last week and made national headlines.
As a consequence of following such falsehoods, Tenney told the judge he has lost his job, his career as a high-end cook and was forced to cash out his person and his 401(k) retirement fund.
The judge said he was giving Tenney less than the four years asked by prosecutors because he wanted to avoid an unfair disparity with the probation sentence given to a friend of Tenneys who had accompanied him that day. That man, who received probation, not only avoided violent actions but appeared to try to stop Tenney from fighting with police, the judge noted. The judge also said he was mindful of Tenneys remorse.
