Senator Jeff Merkley appreciation thread

I was on vacation when all this started to go down but unless I missed something it seems like it was Senator Jeff Merkley who got the ball rolling when he started attempting to get into the immigrant detention centers. This got the media to start covering this and as more and more people realized what was going on, it got out of Trump's control and reached a level of deserved outrage from the American people.

The battle on this issue is far from over but I wonder if hardly anyone would be aware of this Gov. sponsored child abuse yet if it had not been for his courageous attempts to draw attention to what was going on?

If Trump goes down I suspect many of his base may give up on politics

unless someone equally or more crazy comes along. That is if many of them don't die in an uprising against the "Deep State" they think took him down. I have heard a few of them say if he can't get stuff done like the wall, they would give up on politics.

These folks can only be motivated by an authoritarian cult leader type like Trump. They are primarily Jerry Springer, conspiracy types, completely out of touch with reality and if the GOP starts running someone moderate like a Romney or John Kasich who is respectful minorities and wants to mend fences with NATO etc., it won't be enough for them to grab for their ky jelly. In fact, someone like that would be a big turn off for them.

The real test to see if the country can shed itself of this infestation of want to be Natzi idiots will be to see if someone as crazy can't get the next nomination or gets clobbered in the general election. Their little dream world will be shattered and they would be demoralized with many of them giving up or a few only being brought out to vote with wedge issues. We will all be a lot wiser as to how fragile our Democracy is.

Why wouldn't Trump help Cohen if Cohen has more dirt on him?

This has been at the front of my mind ever since I heard Trump had abandoned Cohen. This just doesn't make sense to me because it's just stupid on an epic level unless there is not much more Cohen can give Muller from what they may have already found. Maybe by distancing himself from Cohen Trump thinks he looks cleaner? Trump is such an ass, perhaps his anger at Cohen for not handling things well, may have him blinded? We know Trump will easily throw someone under the bus if they are sloppy but in this instance you would think Trump would understand that keeping Cohen close is a better bet to shield him.

Help me understand why Trump would possibly throw someone who knows were all of his bodies are buried, under the bus?

Pope Joins Calls To End Family Separations, Says He Stands 'With Refugees'

Pope Francis has added his voice to the growing chorus of those decrying the Trump administration's "zero-tolerance" policy on illegal border crossings that has resulted in the separation of parents and children traveling together.

"A person's dignity does not depend on them being a citizen, a migrant, or a refugee," the pope tweeted Wednesday with the hashtag #WithRefugees. "Saving the life of someone fleeing war and poverty is an act of humanity."

In another tweet, the pope said Jesus is encountered "in those who are poor, rejected, or refugees," and implored his nearly 8 million followers not to let fear "get in the way of welcoming our neighbour in need."

Politicians are suppose to kiss children, not do state sponsored child abuse. This is a GOP disaster

This is what happens when you put only racist, crazy, ass holes around you instead of a few devils advocates and people of all different persuasions and experiences. You start implementing policies your little Nazi group-think buddies LOVE but 3/4 of the country find absolutely appalling.

Trump really stepped in it with this one. The fucking CRAZY, PIG-FACE, SHIT-HOLE, KKK base LOVES this! Absolutely love it! Unfortunately for them 70% of the country is disgusted on an epic level. So what to do now that you have dug yourself into a hole like this? They really have no idea how to clean this up. They have gone from "The Bible says this is great!" to "Oops, we were wrong about the Bible, this was the Democrats and there is NOTHING we can do!!!" to "These places are like summer camp!"

They really stepped in it this time and there is no where to go. They end it and the base will be pissed and if they don't end it then they will be slaughtered in the midterms.

Smooth move ex-lax Trump. This is what you get when you are so weak you only want people who agree with you on the team and I can guarantee you they will continue to do shit the base will love and the rest of the country will be appalled by if Trump doesn't break up his group-think cabinet of like minded Nazi's.
