Sedona, AZ: 'We just need a little help': how a safe parking plan for people living in cars split a US town

Sedona, Arizona, lacks affordable housing, but a program for priced-out local workers to sleep safely has drawn opposition

Jodi Jackson moved to Sedona, Arizona, last year for a slower pace of life. The 52-year-old has found the affluent town – known for its red rocks and appeal to the new age crowd – to be welcoming.

Working in a local laundromat, she comes into contact with a wide range of customers, from those cleaning linens for short-term rentals to those living in their cars. Jackson herself lives in an RV, having left an abusive relationship and spending time in jail and rehab; she is one of many in the area who sleep in vehicles, priced out by the high cost and low availability of housing.

Finding a safe and affordable place to park has proved impossible. To camp, Jackson moves between a nearby state park and the parking lots of businesses that don’t hassle her.

Under a program proposed by the city, she could get a place to sleep safely and legally: somewhere she could pull in her RV after work and leave in the morning. But the scheme, designed to cater to the town’s workforce, has been put on hold in the face of vocal opposition.

U.S. approved more bombs to Israel on day of World Central Kitchen strikes

Source: Washington Post

The Biden administration approved the transfer of thousands more bombs to Israel on the same day Israeli airstrikes in Gaza killed seven aid workers for the charity group World Central Kitchen, three U.S. officials told The Washington Post this week after the incident elicited global condemnation.

The transaction, which has not been previously reported, demonstrates the administration’s determination to continue its flow of lethal weaponry to Israel despite Monday’s high-profile killings and growing calls for the United States to condition such support on greater protection for civilians in the war zone. A U.S. citizen was among the dead.

The move also casts new light on the emotional statement by President Biden that he was “outraged and heartbroken” by the tragedy and was insistent that such events never happen again.
“They were providing food to hungry civilians in the middle of a war,” Biden said. “They were brave and selfless.”

The White House did not respond to a request for comment.

Netanyahu-BenGvir-Smotrich government presents: "Without the World"

https://twitter.com/UnxeptableD/status/1773233971695849567?s=20

I received this via Haaretz:

When "We Are the World" was released in 1985 to raise funds to combat a calamitous famine in Ethiopia, it was an iconic moment, both for humanitarian compassion and for the overcoming of (pop star-size) egos for the sake of a higher cause.

Now, Israel's "SNL"-style satire show "Eretz Nehederet" has produced a reimagined version by Israel's governing coalition: "Without the world." This dark version is sung without the "centrist adults" who joined the war cabinet after October 7, but by the whole dismal, extremist, clownish ensemble that Benjamin Netanyahu chose after the November 2022 elections.

The shared melody with the charity hit is where the similarities end: This is a ballad of boorishness, small-minded idiocy and populism. It is therefore a fitting anthem for the Netanyahu government.

Maurizio Pollini (1942-2024) plays Chopin Nocturne no. 8 op. 27 no. 2

Pollini passed away earlier this week. His Chopin nocturnes were one of the first classical albums I ever bought and were a gateway to a lifetime of beauty for me.

RIP Maurizio.

Zelensky spoke with Mike Johnson today

I congratulate him on his remarkable self control.

I spoke with @SpeakerJohnson and thanked him personally, both parties, the American people, and President Biden for their critical support of Ukraine since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion.

I briefed Speaker Johnson on the battlefield situation, specifically the dramatic increase in Russia's air terror. Last week alone, 190 missiles, 140 "Shahed" drones, and 700 guided aerial bombs were launched at Ukrainian cities and communities. Ukraine's largest hydroelectric power plant has gone offline.

In this situation, quick passage of US aid to Ukraine by Congress is vital. We recognize that there are differing views in the House of Representatives on how to proceed, but the key is to keep the issue of aid to Ukraine as a unifying factor.

We also discussed the importance of cutting off Russia's sources of funding for its war as soon as possible and using frozen Russian assets for Ukraine’s benefit. We also rely on the leadership of Congress in this regard.

Doris Kearns Goodwin on "An Unfinished Love Story"

It’s about her husband Richard, Quiz Show lawyer and speechwriter and advisor to JFK, LBJ and RFK. His book Remembering America: A Voice From The Sixties, is one of the best political histories I’ve ever read.
