The Heartbeat of Democracy

Amazing video of de-escalation at MoKaBe Coffeshop in Ferguson last night. It was a designated "safe place" on private property. However police in riot gear followed them and surrounded the building and would not let them leave. There were arrests, and tear gas. It was very very tense, until the Rev. Sekou took charge.

Norways melting glaciers

1,300-Year-Old Powder Ski Found in Norway

Southern Norway’s glaciers are melting fast and giving up secrets of our ancient past. Recently, this melting has lead to some incredible discoveries with the most significant a 1,300-year-old powder ski.

Kajieme Powell age 25 shot 12 times for stealing two energy drinks and donuts. Pacing and agitated, obviously having a mental crisis that should be obvious to most first responders

Confused about Mike Brown head wound

I remain puzzled by how Mike Brown sustained this final and fatal wound. If the vertex of scalp is on the top of the head, and it had a downward path, a 6'4" Brown would have to be at a 90 degree angle if he was "charging" at Wilson, like he says. If Brown already had a wound to his chest, how can this be possible, to run at this angle to get a wound of the top of his head, it defies the laws of physics. I think with a chest wound, the body doubles over, and he was stumbling, or already on his knees.
From the PDF of Mike Brown autopsy, I don't know how to copy for here, so paraphrasing: #1 Gunshot entrance wound of the vertex of the scalp......near midline of vertex of the head ..The path of this shot is downward and rightward.

here is the link to document in PDF

This is where "vertex of head" is

Frank Serpico: The police are still out of control

The Police Are Still Out of Control
I should know

Today the combination of an excess of deadly force and near-total lack of accountability is more dangerous than ever: Most cops today can pull out their weapons and fire without fear that anything will happen to them, even if they shoot someone wrongfully. All a police officer has to say is that he believes his life was in danger, and he’s typically absolved. What do you think that does to their psychology as they patrol the streets—this sense of invulnerability? The famous old saying still applies: Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. (And we still don’t know how many of these incidents occur each year; even though Congress enacted the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act 20 years ago, requiring the Justice Department to produce an annual report on “the use of excessive force by law enforcement officers,” the reports were never issued.)

It wasn’t any surprise to me that, after Michael Brown was shot dead in Ferguson, officers instinctively lined up behind Darren Wilson, the cop who allegedly killed Brown. Officer Wilson may well have had cause to fire if Brown was attacking him, as some reports suggest, but it is also possible we will never know the full truth—whether, for example, it was really necessary for Wilson to shoot Brown at least six times, killing rather than just wounding him. As they always do, the police unions closed ranks also behind the officer in question. And the district attorney (who is often totally in bed with the police and needs their votes) and city power structure can almost always be counted on to stand behind the unions

Media guide for differences between Pumpkin Riots and Ferguson

Riot gear, pepper spray, not Ferguson. New Hampshire

Pumpkin Festival turns into riot

Riot crews were out in full force twice Saturday in Keene, New Hampshire, after an afternoon party got out of control and raucous crowds returned at night.

In the afternoon incident, at least 30 people were injured near Keene State College. Twenty people were transported to hospitals, according to Keene Fire Chief Mark Howard, who said that injuries appeared to be minor at this time.

At that same time, there had been about 12 arrests.

101st Airborne ready for war on Ebola

At Fort Campbell, 101st Airborne ready for war on Ebola

'If you want it done, ask the 101' was the battle cry uttered at Fort Campbell on Tuesday as the 101st Airborne prepared to go to war against the Ebola virus in West Africa

'What can we do?'

In his remarks following the casing of the colors, a ceremony that means deployment is imminent, 101st Airborne Division commander Maj. Gen. Gary Volesky said people keep asking him why the division is being sent and what his troops can possibly do to contain a disease that has now reached into multiple countries, including the U.S.

"I tell them," he said, "we provide a number of capabilities that no one else in the world can provide.

"We're going to bring in construction engineers and equipment to build Ebola treatment units quickly... Our medical professionals will train 500 local health care workers a week to educate the local population on Ebola... We will also provide the capability to resupply critical infrastructure to continue Ebola treatment and prevention programs until the host nation or other non-governmental organizations (NGOs) can take responsibility for these sustainment efforts.

"And most importantly, our presence provides confidence that something can and will be done and we're exactly the right unit to accomplish this task."
