A tale of two former presidents (Clinton on the campaign trail - Bush in the Caymans)
A tale of two former presidents
By Steve Benen - Thu Nov 1, 2012 10:12 AM EDT
Just this week, former President Bill Clinton has campaigned for President Obama in Florida, Ohio, Minnesota, Colorado, and Iowa. Today, Clinton will hit the stump for Obama in Wisconsin and again in Ohio. By most measures, the former president has become Obama's most popular and most effective surrogate.
And then there's Clinton's successor.
George W. Bush will spend Thursday in the Cayman Islands, delivering the keynote address at the Cayman Alternative Investment Summit. As Romney struggles to convince voters that he understands their economic struggles, having the previous Republican president reminding them of the questions surrounding Romney's financial dealings in the Caymans is beyond unhelpful.

Which reminds me -- has anyone asked Romney about his secret tax returns lately?
As for the former presidents, the public roles of both couldn't be more striking. Clinton is one of the nation's most popular figures, and Bush is hiding because Republicans don't want voters to be reminded of the similarities between his and Romney's agendas.

In Storm Deaths, Mystery, Fate and Bad Timing

The storm found them all.
Hurricane Sandy, in the wily and savage way of natural disasters, expressed its full assortment of lethal methods as it hit the East Coast on Monday night. In its howling sweep, the authorities said the storm claimed at least 40 lives in eight states.
They were infants and adolescents, people embarking on careers and those looking back on them the ones who paid the ultimate price of this most destructive of storms. In Franklin Township, Pa., an 8-year-old boy was crushed by a tree when he ran outside to check on his familys calves. A woman died in Somerset County, Pa., when her car slid off a snowy road.
There were 16 deaths reported in New York City, where the toll was heaviest, and 5 more fatalities elsewhere in the state.
Most of all, it was the trees. Uprooted or cracked by the furious winds, they became weapons that flattened cars, houses and pedestrians. But also, a woman was killed by a severed power line. A man was swept by flooding waters out of his house and through the glass of a store. The power blinked off for a 75-year-old woman on a respirator, and a heart attack killed her.

WASHINGTON -- A sting of vitriol-laden text messages hit voters' phones Tuesday night, blasting President Barack Obama with anti-gay attacks and false claims.
In what appeared to be a coordinated campaign of cell phone text mail or text messages, one Virginia voter received one from the address sms@votegopett.com that made the inflammatory claim: "Obama supports homosexuality and its radical social agenda. Say No to Obama on Nov 6!"
MIke Madden tweeted one for sms@informedett.com that declared "Re-electing Obama puts Medicare at risk."
Attorney Pater Saharko tweeted that he got a message from the same address that read: "Obama is using your tax dollars to fund Planned Parenthood and abortion. Is that right?"
