The REAL "know-nothings" accused "us" of being a bunch of ignorant, naive "know-nothings"

who were a danger to the country and would get the rest of us killed if we didn't cheer on the invasion. As it turns out, most of "us" were right and our "leaders" were dangerously WRONG about everything and the only *positive* outcome of the whole endeavor was getting rid of Saddam, his goons, and kooky and sociopathic sons. However, given the monstrous price tag- in terms of American and Iraqi lives, money, prestige, etc.- that we paid to accomplish that, I don't think that anybody can say, with a straight face, that it was worth it, particularly when the war wasn't even "sold" on the basis of getting rid of Saddam. It was about disarming Saddam Hussein of WMDs which, as we learned later and I think that most of us suspected at the time, were non-existent or at least not serious enough of a problem to warrant an invasion/occupation, especially since Saddam had (reluctantly) allowed UN inspectors back in at the time. The thing that always got me whenever Bush, Cheney, et. al started talking about Iraq being such a "threat" to our country and the world is that Iraq didn't even have full control over its own airspace! Shouldn't any country planning to attack the US and/or threaten the world at least have control over its own airspace???? Also revealing of the deception about the threat level posed by Iraq was the fact that most other countries in the region or nearby didn't feel threatened enough by Iraq to support the invasion/occupation of Iraq.

Problem is that Republicans just don't believe that government

-aside from constantly cutting tax cuts for the wealthy and alleged "job creators" and kicking over anthills everywhere all over the world with our military- does anything worthwhile or good for the country. Actually, they don't believe that government should really even be allowed to do anything else it seems- and they have a whole armada of rationalizations about why and they get some people to not only believe it but also to help catapault their propaganda every.darn.day and then when they see things getting worse and they're getting screwed, they are told again to blame President Obama, Democrats, progressives, et. al and are given more propaganda to endlessly recycle in chain e-mails, Facebook, etc. Wash.rinse.repeat.

I get that

but the Republicans- as they currently exist- have become irrational and unhinged and can't be dealt with honestly nor in good faith. If it takes electoral oblivion for them for some of the more rational elements of the Republicanverse to return and get back to business, then so be it.

No

it's about defending Bush's "honor" and "integrity", apparently. At least, that what it sounds like. Is McCain SERIOUSLY defending Bush's (unnecessary) foreign policy f-ups in Iraq????

Is anybody but him still defending Bush/Cheney on Iraq? Seriously?

Maybe

I think that he's pretty good at what he does for the most part. After Daschle was defeated in 2004, he did a good job rallying the Democrats in the Senate against Bush's Social Security scheming. The main problem is that he is still responding to how things used to be only a few years ago. However, the Republicans have rapidly (de-)volved since then and I don't think him and most of the "old school" Democrats have been able and/or willing to adapt to match them blow-for-blow. The Democrats in the Senate really need to take a an hour or two sometime soon (maybe Joe B. can attend too?) for a good old-fashioned "huddle" to try to come up with some kind of strategy to break the Republican chokehold they have on the Senate and/or figure out some way to make the Republicans pay an increasingly expensive price for their tactics.

Yes- feeling very depressed

Hopefully people look back on this period of time and wonder WTF people were thinking electing all of these know-nothings and anarchists destroying our government and/or making it totally dysfunctional- esp knowing, in a lot of cases- that people actually explicitly RAN on a platform of ruining government!

President Obama has never gotten a fair shake IMHO and was dealt possibly the worse hand ever when it came to the Congress that he was given to work with. Even the Democratic Congress he was given at the start of his Presidency wasn't all that great (though certainly better than what we've had since 2011)

I really don't like "responses" to SOTU speeches

I find them canned and full of sour grapes and, frankly, depressing to listen to after a rousing SOTU address. What I would really like to see is a genuine off-the-cuff response to the actual speech, not a five-ten minute anti-whoever-the-President-is-screed.

Another day

Another excuse.

BTW do they not ever plan for these shutdowns/maintenence, etc. Must be a great gig to be able to shut down your factories/refineries, raise your prices, and then blame the resulting increases on shutting down.

February 13, 2013

I'm not watching ANY of the Republican Tea Party "Responses" (and here's why)

"Obama bad blah, blah, blah...............America is doomed as long as he is in the WH blah, blah, blah......."higher taxes" blah, blah, blah......Huge deficits........Greece.......blah, blah, blah.............No budget blah blah blah..........Sequester is going to kill us and it's going to be all Obama's fault blah blah blah.........good night."

See, I saved everybody the trouble. You don't even need to be the amazing Kreskin to figure out what the Republicans are going to say any more about anything President Obama says or does.

IOW

GOTV in EVERY single solitary election and vote for candidates whom are interested in actually creating jobs and expanding opportunity for everybody. And, although we shouldn't really have to remind people, don't vote for people who openly profess a distrust and hatred for government and want to do nothing but tear it down and obstruct the functioning thereof!
