Mad_Machine76's JournalAnd no Dems strayed either, in the end
I think that we were somewhat worried about Collins (Doug), Sinema, and Manchin, but, in the end, they all did the right thing, possibly, or maybe largely because Mitch's sham yam of a trial and Republican refusal to hear more witnesses.
And we got Mittens on one charge, which is just the kind of thing that will stick hard in Trump's crawl.
Meanwhile
Democrats: "Uh, hey. We impeached him and voted unanimously to convict."
But I get it, Mitch was a Republican "Unicorn" on one of the charges, so, of course, the media is going to pay more attention to him.
Impeachment Helps Trump?
Ever since the Democrats in the House pulled the trigger on Impeachment, I've encountered a few people, and not just Republicans but also some Democrats, surprisingly, that literally believe that Impeachment was a mistake and that it will only make Trump more popular. My question is, where is evidence of this? If we're following the polls, a majority of people in the country wanted Trump removed from office, so why would his partisan acquittal by a highly partisan Republican Senate (see, they don't really care about bipartisanship when it comes to Impeaching a President) make him more popular, not just among his base, but among the general public and put him in a stronger position in November? Where did this new "conventional wisdom" even come from to begin with and why are even some Democrats buying into it?
Clinton's approval ratings went up
because everybody could see that Republicans *were* really out to get him. Trump, by comparison, still pretty much just has his cult supporters and everybody else knows he's guilty as sin and getting off in the Senate simply because the Republicans are in the majority and have no desire to lose out on the benefits of keeping him in office.
The timing is interesting
It seems everything is being spun into a blender as being a particularly disastrous day for the Democrats- The Iowa Caucus and Democrats at each other's throats (with some claiming rigging by the dastardly DNC), The 49% Trump Approval Gallup Poll, SOTU Address, which I'm sure will be Trump crowing out his new "Kingly" status and his pending acquittal, etc. Perfect storm of bad news. It shall all pass, though
All but only the most ardent Trumplickers
know that Trump is a s**tshow IMHO. The remaining questions for everybody else are:
1. Will they get out and vote for whoever his Democratic opponent is, as well as voting against Trump's congressional enablers?
2. Will they BE ABLE TO vote for whoever his Democratic opponent is, as well against Trump's congressional enablers
If the answers to both of those questions are yes, then I think that there's a good chance we will sweep him out of office in November, and hopefully bring in a majority in both chambers of Congress. Then, we will stand a good chance of fixing things. I just have a bad feeling that the answers to both of those questions will be much more complicated.
That's by far the more important story here
Actually, it's the ONLY one
Democrats aren't responsible for the Republican's unwillingness to listen to facts, evidence, witnesses
I can't disagree
I would definitely like to see Democrats really take a strong stance against this. There should not be ANY reason short of death that a legal adult shouldn't be able to have the right to cast a vote in our democracy and the instant we start making exceptions to whom can participate in it we have failed.
IKR
It's all relative with these people. They would not hesitate to try to impeach a Democrat no matter whether it's their first term, in an election year. They impeached Clinton in a (Congressional) Election year. The execution of justice does not and should not rest on such arbitrary distinctions.
There seems to be a perception/belief
that Democrats have to MAKE Republicans behave and do their jobs and it's so f**king annoying.
