In a restaurant, today I saw eight CBP officers in dress uniform. Two of them in kilts.

My wife and I happened to be at a restaurant in Mission, Tx having dinner today when we saw Customs and Border Patrol officers in dress uniform enter the restaurant. I saw one of them wearing a kilt.

After dinner, as we were leaving, and curious about the kilt, I decided to approach their table and ask them what was the event they were going to or coming from.

They told me they were coming from a funeral for a police officer from Mission. The two dressed in kilts were pipers. The other six dressed in pants were the pallbearers.

A police officer from Mission succumbed to covid-19. The Mission PD is small and they don't have a ceremonial guard of their own. So they asked the CPB to perform the funeral rites and they did.

I asked the officers in kilts what tartan they wore, and they answered that it was the registered tartan of the Customs and Border Patrol.

I thanked them for their assistance to a fellow law enforcement unit and left the restaurant with a lump in my throat.

Texas runoff elections tomorrow, July 14, 2020

Texas will hold its 2020 runoff elections July 14 to finalize which Democratic and Republican primary candidates will be on the ballot for the November general election. In more than 30 races in the March 3 primary, no candidate exceeded 50% of the vote, bringing about runoff races between the candidates who came in first and second. Here are all of the candidates who will be on the ballot in the primary runoffs for statewide, congressional and legislative offices.

The 2020 primary runoffs were supposed to take place May 26 but were postponed to July 14 in response to the outbreak of the new coronavirus in Texas.

The pandemic has also sparked a legal fight over the expansion of voting through mail-in ballots. Here’s the latest on who is eligible to vote by mail in Texas for the runoffs.

Early voting runs from June 29 through July 10, doubling the length of the early voting period for the runoffs because of the coronavirus pandemic.

If you voted in a party primary in March, you can only vote in the same party’s runoff. You can check out the results of the March 3 primary here.

Should police unions be liable for the behavior of its members?

Should they carry liability insurance paid for by the union members?

Why should the city be liable for the behavior of the police instead of the police union?

I almost shredded my EIP card by mistake (theirs)

Two months after the CARES Act was signed into law, millions of Americans have yet to receive stimulus payments. The process has been held up by a raft of issues, including poor communication, entirely avoidable loopholes, and unnecessary delays. Now, instead of receiving paper checks or direct deposits, about 4 million people will get prepaid debit cards, the Treasury Department announced earlier this month. But even this part of the stimulus rollout has its own problem: made-up names.

On Twitter, several people have reported that the card issuer replaced their last name with their spouse’s—identifying them with a name that is not theirs.

I can confirm this monumental fuck-up in my case. I almost shredded this payment without opening it because the name was wrong.
