MyUncle
MyUncle's JournalSorry Chris Kluwe fans, he's playing us and is a hypocrite.
Chris Kluwe calls out the coaches of the Vikings and says that they are cowards for
#1 not standing up for what was right or
#2 because they were afraid that if they did the right thing, their careers would be in jeopardy.
I'll give Chris credit for taking a stance while he was a player. His statements and Comic Con lifestyle created buzz, was covered by many media outlets and made him the most covered punter in the NFL. His high profile lead to massive media attention including gigs writing for multiple media outlets including Sports Illustrated.
After the Vikings, Chris was cut by the Oakland Raiders this Fall. He lost his job to a young, black punter with a stronger leg and was significantly less money. Chris went through the year, hoping to get back in to the NFL as a punter while keeping up his media profile.
By the end of the year it became obvious that he was done - he's old (by NFL standards), expensive, marginally productive and ...yes ...controversial.
So he calls Viking coach Leslie Frazier and GM Rick Spielman cowards because they wanted to lay low to presumably to protect their employment. But he only decides to write the article (which he acknowledges with kill any chance of a career) AFTER he and the entire football world comes to the conclusion that he will never play in the NFL again anyway.
Therefore, he has nothing else to lose and he has no employment to jeopardize. By writing this well timed, post season, playoffs atmosphere, NFL withdrawal period article his "courage", celebrity and media desirability will be enhanced more than any other NFL player's calculated, post career spin campaign.
He will get praises for the article, but how do you not see the hypocrisy?
This smells like a very calculated self promotion.
Would a Spectrometer camera satisfy privacy concerns in public places?
I remember seeing this and thinking the application for surveillance would be useful. Basically, structure the cameras to capture the spectrum's that have explosives. So instead of having cameras that show what people are doing, it will show what they are carrying around that would be dangerous.
Yes, sorry, but I imagine it could be used for finding contraband as well. What are the limits of technology vs. freedom. Probably a dead thread thanks to gratuitous nudity interrupter, but oh well....

Are you happy about the past 4 years, are you optimistic about the next 4 years?
I am.
Engineering the consequences of climate change Topic 1 - The Salt Lakes & Seas
FYI, I'd like to post in this forum some ideas regarding fixing climate change consequences. I want to talk about how to mitigate the effects on planetary temperature change.
I do not believe we can reverse the current CO2 emissions increases from fossil fuels for many decades. The primary reason is that 3rd and 2nd world communities want fuel based economies. A fuel based economy greatly enhances their life expectancy and their perceived quality of life at the least expense. To deny them that is going to prove extremely problematic and highly unlikely. You may or may not disagree, just wanted to tell you where I'm coming from.
I want to discuss, desalination, CO2 recapture and disposition, space based solutions, etc.
I hope it's stimulating.
My first idea is the replenishment of the Salt Seas and lakes around the world. I read that the Dead Sea level is dramatically dropping Dead Sea water loss continues at record rate. The Dead Sea dropped a record 4.9 feet over the last 12 months because of industry use and evaporation, the Hydrological Service of Israel said. - http://seattletimes.com/html/nationworld/2019541368_deadsea28.html
Would it be possible to mitigate some of the lowering salt sea & lake levels by pumping sea water from rising oceans in to these salt bodies of water? I live near the Salton Sea, a dying lake, that once was a recreational mecca as well as an important bird sanctuary. This lake will die unless something is done. Why not set up global programs to pump water from the ocean and fill these lakes so they return to something that is not dead or dying?
The infrastructure projects are huge (jobs) - for example getting a salt water pipeline the Great Salt Lake. The threats from a spill are minimal using oil maintenance and monitoring technology. Below is a table that lists how much water in each place and what % that represents. I do not believe glaciers will completely melt so we are taking about fractional but perhaps significantly lowering sea levels so it is safer.
Oceans 1,370,000 97.61%
Glaciers, ice, snow 29,000 2.08%
Subsurface 4,067 0 .295%
Freshwat lakes, rivers 126 0.009%
Saline lakes 104 0.008%
Atmosphere 14 0.001%

Do not trust Christie's praise of President Obama. It's a set up.
The mess that Sandy created can not be fixed by election day. There are going to be millions of people in NJ without power this weekend. Gov. Christie praised President Obama but the Gov is going to be looking to blame someone as the situation continues to deteriorate or, at best, not improve.
Guess what the MEME is going to be? My thought, "I showed the President the situation, but things are not happening fast enough. Where is FEMA, the National Guard, where are the resources we need, why do we still not have power...etc...?"
He is a REPUBLICAN, he wants Mitt Romney to be president.
BEWARE.
60 Hours - 2 nights, it's going to get ugly.
I've lived through many power outages, they suck.
It's impossible for this Sandy Mess to be cleaned up by anyone, anything, any super hero, under any circumstances. BUT, people are going to be cranky, pissed, complaining, mad, outraged and then casting blame within 60 hours of the landfall - 8 AM 10-29-12. You'll be able to time it.
All I can say is that the Presidential election won't be impacted because NY, NJ, CT, Maryland, Delaware, Rhode Island and MA are not swing states.
But get ready, because PEOPLE in those state are about to be royally pissed off. They are just not used to being in circumstances like this.
By Thursday morning the Atlantic States will be making a lot of noise that ain't pretty.
If this would have been a catastrophic storm for the upper Midwest.... I don't even want to think about it.
I'd really like to hear what an Obama/Walker WI voter thinks.
If you weigh in, I congratulate your courage. The numbers indicate you are out there, what's up?
Please tell us what your thought process was. We all have a lot to learn, you could teach us.
Sorry in advance for the bashing, be strong, state your opinion please. "Crickets" means we have fear here in DU.
Please speak out.
Obama Wins Big, Walker Wins Big, what does it mean?
The results are a gigantic statistical validation of 2 things - Obama Wins, Walker Wins.
This is reality, WI said we are Democrats in their Obama polling, they said they are against the agenda of public sector unions in their vote.
This is not close.
It is time for assessment.
I was at the Romney & McCain Memorial Day speeches today. I heard the heckler.
I saw in the U-T San Diego a note about a Memorial Day event at our beautiful Balboa Park today. I try to do something with my family to acknowledge this event - we have visited Punchbowl on Oahu, Rosecrans on Point Loma, Mount Soledad on La Jolla. Not fanatical, but something to acknowledge that this Holiday is more than slathering on Hawaiian Tropic and grilling meat.
I did not know that this was a Republican sponsored event.
We arrived about 9:40 for an event that was supposed to start at 10, it started at 10:45 There was a line that was the longest line I have ever seen. It was not because of the volume of people but because they only had 2 metal detectors. We opted to sit "outside" the fenced in part of the event - about 20 ' behind the inside people.
I still did not know it was a Republican event.
There were singers, pledges, speeches about vets, songs and then the Republican Mayoral candidate - Carl DeMaio. He was perhaps the worst "qualified" speaker I have ever heard, a bumbling, mumbling, anxious mess. I was blown away by how bad he was. Nothing to do with message (they all kept it about The Day and The Vets in attendance) but an incompetent, weirdly amateurish, awkward mess.
Then, John McCain - shortly after he started - he got heckled. The protestor was yelling "Why are you covering up the Liberty and Israel!!! Tell the truth about the Liberty". Then he was bull rushed out and McCain said "Jerk!" and got applauded. I'm not a big fan of hecklers, but would love to know why this guy chose that line of protest when there is so much more to go off on.
Mitt Romney was brief, played to audience, talked about American exceptionalism, quoted Shimon Peres and Colin Powell and was gone.
The audience was probably 99.99% white and either 55+ or families with lots of small kids.
I entered the Twilight Zone, got to see Secret Service in action, got sun burned and lived.
I still really have not processed totally how I wound up there and what actually happened.
