Warner Calls on William Barr to Testify
October 25, 2019 at 11:26 am EDT By Taegan Goddard

Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA) criticized Attorney General William Barr over reports that the Justice Department is launching a criminal investigation of the Russia probe.

Said Warner: “Senate Intel is wrapping up a three-year bipartisan investigation, and we’ve found nothing remotely justifying this… He needs to come before Congress and explain himself.”

Political spending at Trump properties surpasses $20M

Political spending at Trump properties surpasses $20M
By Karl Evers-Hillstrom
October 24, 2019

Federal political committees have spent more than $20 million at businesses owned by President Donald Trump since the 2008 cycle, according to an OpenSecrets analysis of Federal Election Commission filings.

Roughly 99 percent of that money has come since the start of the 2016 cycle, when Trump announced his bid for president and began spending campaign money at his own properties. Over that time, Trump campaign-affiliated committees have funneled about $16.8 million to Trump-owned businesses, the bulk of the spending at his properties.

Republican political campaigns and PACs have spent just under $1.8 million at Trump-owned businesses in the 2020 cycle thus far. Most of that comes from the Trump campaign, but 48 different Republican members of Congress also spent donor dollars this cycle through their affiliated political committees.

How we will remember our boss, Chairman Elijah Cummings: Moral clarity in all he did

How we will remember our boss, Chairman Elijah Cummings: Moral clarity in all he did
He listened to us, respected us, trusted us and was truly proud of us. He had so much left to accomplish, but he has left it for us to complete.
Current and former staff of Rep. Elijah Cummings

As current and former congressional staff of the late Rep. Elijah E. Cummings, chairman of the House Oversight and Reform Committee, we had the great honor and privilege of working with him over the course of more than two decades.

Many public figures have praised the chairman in recent days, extolling his unmatched integrity, courageous leadership and commitment to service and justice. To these well-deserved tributes, we would like to add our own eulogy, based on our experience working by his side.

He was inspiring, both in public and even more so in private. He brought moral clarity to everything he did, and his purpose was pure — to help those among us who needed it most. He taught us that our aim should be to “give a voice to the voiceless,” including families whose drinking water had been poisoned, sick patients who could no longer afford their medicine and, most of all, vulnerable children and “generations yet unborn.”
'What feeds your soul?'

Whether in a hearing room full of members of Congress or in a quiet conversation with staff, his example motivated us to become our best selves in the service of others.

He was genuine. He insisted on personally interviewing every staff member he hired so he could “look into their eyes.” Each of us has a personal memory of sitting down with him for the first time, and it was like nothing we had experienced before. He would ask why we were interested in public service, how we thought we could contribute and what motivated us.

Then he would lean in and ask in his low baritone voice, “But … what feeds your soul?”

More than a few of us left those interviews with tears in our eyes, perhaps feeling that we had learned more about ourselves than about him. He made that kind of personal connection with everyone he met, from the people of his district, to witnesses who testified at hearings, to whistleblowers who reported waste, fraud or abuse. Since his passing, we have been inundated with messages from many whose lives he touched.

Be efficient and seek 'higher ground'

He was demanding. He would boast that he had the hardest working staff in Congress and that he sometimes would call or email us in the middle of the night, which was absolutely true. His directive to be “effective and efficient in everything you do” still rings in our ears.

Dear President Donald Trump:Let me tell you about my ex-boss Elijah Cummings

In exchange, he listened to us, respected us and trusted us. He made sure we knew he was truly proud of us — memories we each now cherish. The result of his unwavering support was fierce loyalty from every member of his staff. We committed to doing everything in our power to fulfill his vision.

He was a unifying force, even in this era of partisanship. He would command order with a sharp rap of his gavel, elevate debate by noting that “we are better than that” and urge all of us to seek “not just common ground, but higher ground.”

Guided by his faith and values, he would look for and bring out the good in others, forming bridges through human connection.

We are here 'only for a minute'

He fully grasped the moment in which we are now living. He invoked history books that will be written hundreds of years from now as he called on us to “fight for the soul of our democracy.” As he said, this is bigger than one man, one president or even one generation.

He was acutely aware of his own transience in this world. He reminded us repeatedly that we are here “only for a minute” and that all of us soon will be “dancing with the angels.”

Bridging the gap:All college students should take a mandatory course on black history and white privilege

He would thunder against injustice, or on behalf of those who could not fight for themselves, and he would vow to keep battling until his “dying breath.” He did just that. His final act as chairman came from his hospital bed just hours before his death, as he continued to fight for critically ill children suddenly in danger of deportation.

He had so much left to accomplish, but he has left it for us to complete. As he told us presciently, “These things don’t happen to us, they happen for us.”

Grateful he was part of our destiny

It is difficult to describe the emptiness we now feel. His spirit was so strong, and his energy so boundless, that the void is devastating.

But, of course, he left us with instructions: “Pain, passion, purpose. Take your pain, turn it into your passion, and make it your purpose.” He lived those words, and he inspired us to do the same.

Sometimes, after a big event, he would take us aside for a quiet moment and say, “I just want to thank you for everything you do and for being a part of my destiny.”

Today, we thank him for being part of ours. And we commit to carrying forward his legacy in the limited time allotted to each of us — to give voice to the voiceless, to defend our democracy, and to always reach for higher ground.

Trump's Lawyer: He's a King

snip//

Hold that thought in your head. Hold it in your head that the president could barbecue a baby and eat it, presumably covered in secret sauce, in front of the baby's parents and then have them hanged, and the president would have to be impeached and removed from office before the cops could gather evidence to put him in jail. Or, more frighteningly realistically, President Trump could have Adam Schiff and any Democrats investigating him killed and, unless Republicans decided to do something about it, he'd get away with it as long as he was president, a position he could stay in illegally unless...

You see the problem here? Once you declare the president is above the law, then what's to prevent the president from getting crazy with defying the law? It's not that far a leap from defying a subpoena to jailing your political enemies, especially when this superpower of immunity is in the hands of a short-sighted shit-ogre like Donald Trump.

This is what we get when we don't fucking punish people for things like, oh, torture in the early 2000s. When law professor and former Bush Justice Department official John Yoo wrote his 2002 memo saying that the president can order torture if he believes it's in the national interest and there wasn't any pushback (as in arresting people who broke the law on torture, up to and including George W. Bush, who is not your cuddly conservative painter friend, but an actual fucking monster). In 2005, Yoo said that the president could order the torture of a child if he wanted to and Congress just had to deal with it. He was asked, "If the President deems that he’s got to torture somebody, including by crushing the testicles of the person’s child, there is no law that can stop him?" And Yoo responded, "I think it depends on why the President thinks he needs to do that."

Now, according to Conovoy, who looks exactly like someone who would argue this...

...it doesn't matter why the president thinks he needs to do it. He's immune while in office. Done.

These fuckers believe Trump is a king. He should be bound by no law. He should only answer to God and GOP donors. How pathetic.

This is what we've come to in the United States during the reign of this depraved lunatic and the repellent human-shaped farts in the GOP. It's actually news that a leader of the NYPD and the mayor of New York City said that they'd arrest Trump if he shot someone. That should not need saying.

Every goddamn day is another step deeper in this shit pit.

Charles Barkley: 'Vice President Pence needs to shut the hell up'

Charles Barkley: 'Vice President Pence needs to shut the hell up'
By Justine Coleman - 10/24/19 11:07 PM EDT

Former NBA player Charles Barkley said that Vice President Mike Pence “needs to shut the hell up” in response to Pence’s comments blasting the NBA for being accommodating to China.

“First of all, Vice President Pence needs to shut the hell up,” Barkley said during an NBA pregame on TNT. “All American companies are doing business in China.”

The former NBA player added that he thought it was “unfair” that politicians were attempting “to make the NBA and our players look bad” after President Trump has started a trade war against China.

“But I don’t understand why these holier than thou politicians — if they’re so worried about China, then why don’t they stop all transactions with China?” Barkley said.

Lindsey Graham's Resolution Condemning Trump Impeachment Immediately Falls Apart

Lindsey Graham’s Resolution Condemning Trump Impeachment Immediately Falls Apart

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) introduced his resolution condemning Trump’s impeachment, but it was immediately ripped apart as soon as the words left his mouth.

Graham said:

They created a process in the Intel Committee that’s behind closed doors doesn’t provide access to the president’s accuser. Shuts Republicans out for all practical purposes. And is an unworthy substitute for the way you need to do it is at its core un-American…What’s going on is a runaround the impeachment process. Creating a secret proceeding behind closed doors that fundamentally, in my view, denies due process. And when you’re talking about removing the president of the United States, seems to me you’d want to have a process that is consistent with who we are as Americans and consistent with what Bill Clinton was allowed to do, Richard Nixon was allowed to do.”

The problem is that what Sen. Graham said was not true.

Rep. Anthony Brown (D-MD) immediately replied, “When he describes it that way, all he does is try to leave the impression that there’s something nefarious going on. Let’s keep in mind you have 25% of the Republican caucus in the U.S. House of representatives is in that room. That’s unprecedented….Let’s say, that a Democratic member has to ask questions and review documents, those exact privileges are available to Republican members and their why is this in closed session? Because much of the information is classified and a lot of it is and this is different from 1973 Nixon and 1998 Clinton because in those cases, they had a special prosecutor or an independent counsel who did what we’re doing now in closed session behind closed doors. So right now, Adam Schiff and the Intelligence Committee are doing what we did not — what we had done in ’73 and 1998 by special prosecutors and independent counsel.”

Trump Warns Democrats It Would Be “Very Bad” If His Military, Police And Biker Supporters Have To Get “Tough”
This is terrifying.
by Andrea Thompson 28 mins ago

Donald Trump is nothing more than a big, fat schoolyard bully. His entire presidency relies on fearmongering and scare tactics — either terrifying his base over what will happen to them without him or attempting to frighten his opponents with threats.

Trump proved this fact during an Oval Office interview with the far-right news outlet Breitbart News when he issued a thinly-veiled threat to Democratic party members warning that his base his full of “tough people” who will only use their toughness when provoked to a “certain point.”

“It’s so terrible what’s happening,” Trump began.

“You know, the left plays a tougher game, it’s very funny,” he continued. “I actually think that the people on the right are tougher, but they don’t play it tougher. Okay?”

“I can tell you, I have the support of the police, the support of the military, the support of the Bikers for Trump – I have the tough people, but they don’t play it tough until they go to a certain point, and then it would be very bad, very bad. But the left plays it cuter and tougher,” Trump went on.

His threat garnered disproval and concern from University of Michigan public policy professor, Brendan Nyhan, cofounder of an initiative meant to keep the state of U.S. democracy under surveillance.

“This is how an authoritarian talks. Happening right in front of us,” Nyhan posted on his Twitter account.

Liberal journalist Judd Legum added his own tweet stating, “We can’t sugar-coat this. The President of the United States is encouraging the military, police, and bikers to violently attack his critics on the left.”

CNN's Zucker 'very open' to talking to former Fox News anchor Shep Smith
By Joe Concha - 10/24/19 02:47 PM EDT

CNN President Jeff Zucker said Thursday he's "very open to talking" to Shepard Smith during the network's Citizen conference, calling the former Fox News anchor "an immense talent."

Smith, 55, parted ways with Fox News on Oct. 11 and won't immediately be able to take a new job reportedly due to the parameters of his contract.

"I think Shep's a great journalist," Zucker told CNN "Reliable Sources" host Brian Stelter at the network's Citizen conference in New York on Thursday afternoon. "When he's available, he is somebody who is very talented and I would be very open to talking to him."

Bernie Sanders lands prized Iowa endorsement

Bernie Sanders lands prized Iowa endorsement
By HOLLY OTTERBEIN
10/24/2019 02:51 PM EDT

Stacey Walker, a sought-after Iowa Democrat in the first-in-the-nation voting state, is endorsing Bernie Sanders, Walker told POLITICO on Thursday.

Walker, chairman of the Linn County Board of Supervisors, was named one of the “50 most wanted Democrats” in 2020 by The Des Moines Register. He said he is supporting Sanders because he is the most progressive presidential candidate in the race.

“That is what America needs to course-correct from the disaster that Donald Trump and Republicans in Congress have become,” he said. “We need a leader with a bold vision, and as a black man living in America, I’ve had enough of politicians telling me we have to scale back our dreams and ambitions.”

Walker, 31, became the first black member of Linn County’s Board of Supervisors when he was elected in 2016. Linn, whose seat is Cedar Rapids, is the second-most populated county in the state.

Walker’s nod comes on the heels of Sanders winning the endorsements of Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ilhan Omar. Sanders’ aides hope Walker and the members of the so-called “Squad” will demonstrate that a “multigenerational, multiracial working-class movement” is behind him.

McConnell backs resolution condemning House impeachment inquiry

McConnell backs resolution condemning House impeachment inquiry
By Jordain Carney - 10/24/19 11:15 AM EDT

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) is throwing his support behind a resolution condemning the House impeachment inquiry into President Trump.

Senate Republicans are expected to introduce a “Graham-McConnell” resolution later Thursday “condemning the House of Representatives closed door, illegitimate impeachment inquiry,” per a release from Sen. Lindsey Graham’s (R-S.C.) office.

McConnell confirmed to reporters that he will back the measure, saying "obviously I support it."

Graham said earlier this week that he was planning to introduce the resolution, telling Fox News’s Sean Hannity that it “puts the Senate on record condemning the House.

It’s unclear if the resolution will come up for a vote. It would allow GOP senators, who have grown increasingly frustrated with the House, to formalize their opposition. But it would also likely fail to get the 60 votes needed to pass.
