Biden Calls for Reform of Supreme Court
October 22, 2020 at 8:23 am EDT By Taegan Goddard

Joe Biden told 60 Minutes that the Supreme Court system needs reform, saying “it’s getting out of whack.”

He said he would launch a 180-day national commission “of scholars, constitutional scholars, Democrats, Republicans, liberal, conservative” to study Supreme Court reforms.

Said Biden: “It is a live ball. We’re going to have to do that… The last thing we need to do is turn the Supreme Court into just a political football, whoever has the most votes gets whatever they want.”

The Washington Post’s Fact Checker team is having a hard time keeping up with President Trump’s mistruths as he rounds the final bend of the 2020 election, but by their current count, he is making more than 50 false or misleading claims a day. As of Aug. 27, he had made 22,247 known errant claims over 1,316 days, but at his current rate, he is likely to hit 25,000 by Election Day and 30,000 by the end of the year. The lies are coming so fast that the Post team has only been able to calculate the tally to Aug. 27, the day he accepted the Republican presidential nomination—meaning they are eight weeks behind. “Some days were extraordinary: 189 claims (a record) on Aug. 11,” the team writes. “147 claims on Aug. 17, 113 claims on Aug. 20. The previous one-day record was 138 claims—on Nov. 5, 2018, the day before the midterm elections.”

Luntz Says Trump’s Campaign Is Worst He’s Seen
October 22, 2020 at 6:57 am EDT By Taegan Goddard

Prominent Republican pollster Frank Luntz blasted President Trump’s campaign the worst he’s ever seen and saying the president’s advisers should be “brought up on charges of political malpractice,” The Hill reports.

Said Luntz: “It is the worst campaign I’ve ever seen and I’ve been watching them since 1980. They’re on the wrong issues. They’re on the wrong message. They’ve got their heads up their assess… Your damn job is to get your candidate to talk about things that are relevant to the people you need to reach. And if you can’t do your damn job then get out.”

Rick Scott calls for cruises to resume

Rick Scott calls for cruises to resume
Scott argued it’s time for the federal government to pave the way to resume commercial cruises.

U.S. Senator Rick Scott said Wednesday it’s time for the federal government to pave a path to resume commercial cruises.

The Senator, appearing on the Brian Kilmeade Show on the Fox News Radio network, asserted that he’s been “trying to get the Centers for Disease Control to work with the cruise industry” on a way to bring back the sector that has been shuttered since the March advent of COVID-19.

The current CDC no-sail order extends through the end of October 2020, and the Senator clearly believes even that is too long to wait without usable guidance to bring the sector back.

“150,000 jobs in Florida,” Scott said. “Just tell the cruise industry, come up with a plan of how they can get back to work safely.”

The Senator expressed frustration with the opaque federal process.

Biden Called Woman Who Wrote Viral Op-Ed
October 21, 2020 at 10:51 am EDT By Taegan Goddard

A woman who lost her husband to the novel coronavirus told CNN that she spoke to Joe Biden last night, after her Newark Star Ledger op-ed pleading with Americans to vote Donald Trump out of office went viral.

Said Alice Roberts: “It was incredible. He called me, and he told me about his tragedies in his life… It was honestly just like talking to a friend.”

She added: “It was like 11:30pm and we just chatted for probably about 20 minutes. There’s not a lot of highlights in my days recently but that was definitely a highlight.”

Trump Will End His Presidency as He Began It

George Will: “As the Donald Trump parenthesis in the republic’s history closes, he is opening the sluices on his reservoir of invectives and self-pity. A practitioner of crybaby conservatism — no one, he thinks, has suffered so much since Job lost his camels and acquired boils — and ever a weakling, Trump will end his presidency as he began it: whining.”

White House looks at cutting Covid funds, newborn screenings in 'anarchist' cities

Such an evil, selfish bastard.

White House looks at cutting Covid funds, newborn screenings in ‘anarchist’ cities
Documents show funding for a host of health programs is at risk under the president’s order targeting liberal strongholds.

The White House is considering slashing millions of dollars for coronavirus relief, HIV treatment, screenings for newborns and other programs in Democratic-led cities that President Donald Trump has deemed “anarchist jurisdictions,” according to documents obtained by POLITICO.

New York, Portland, Ore., Washington, D.C., and Seattle could lose funding for a wide swath of programs that serve their poorest, sickest residents after the president moved last month to restrict funding, escalating his political battle against liberal cities he’s sought to use as a campaign foil.

The Department of Health and Human Services has identified federal grants covering those services, which are among the nearly 200 health programs that could be in line for cuts as part of a sweeping government-wide directive the administration is advancing during the final weeks of the presidential campaign and amid an intensifying pandemic Trump has downplayed.

After catching COVID-19 that required a brief stay in the hospital, President Trump blithely said, “Don’t let it take over your lives.”

It’s much too late for that, of course. For my family and me, it took over our lives when it took my husband, Rob.

Rob was a beloved police officer and likely contracted COVID-19 while working an overtime shift, like he often did, to help support our family of three kids, two geckos, a dog, a cat and two hamsters. Many shifts were open in his department because his colleagues were becoming sick with the virus. By April, eight of them tested positive out of a department of about 24 people.

Rob’s first COVID-19 test was mislabeled, and the second one took too long to come back. When he collapsed at our home, we still did not know he had it. His coworkers rushed to our house and resuscitated him, risking their own lives to save his. In the hospital, a talented team of doctors and nurses gave him powerful drugs, and he recovered from the virus. However, Rob’s brain never rebounded from the lack of oxygen from when he collapsed.

As our collective losses continue to pile up, what has President Trump lost? Nothing. At least not yet. My hope is that he loses this election.

Before this year, I never made too many pleas in life. But I have made plenty these past several months. First, a plea for my husband’s life. Then, a plea for my kids to have a semblance of normalcy.

Now, I have one for anybody who supports President Trump or for voters who are still on the fence. I plead with you to remember his lack of action after learning the true dangers of the virus in January. Consider the long-term consequences that his failed pandemic response has had on first responders, doctors, nurses, workers, students, teachers, and families. Think of how much more we still stand to lose if we re-elect President Trump who, time and again, has shown us who he is, mask off.

It’s too late to prevent this virus from taking over our lives at this moment. But we still have time to make sure it doesn’t define our future if we stand together in this election and vote out President Trump.

Alice Roberts is the widow of Charles “Rob” Roberts who died from COVID-19 at the age of 45. Mr. Roberts' death was the first line of duty death in the Glen Ridge Police Department’s history.

A Biden Landslide?

October 21, 2020 at 6:18 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 73 Comments

New York Times: “For some Democrats, Mr. Trump’s attention to red states is also a sign of something else — something few in the party want to discuss out loud, given their scars from Mr. Trump’s surprise victory in 2016. It’s an indication that Mr. Biden could pull off a landslide in November, achieving an ambitious and rare electoral blowout that some Democrats think is necessary to quell any doubts — or disputes by Mr. Trump — that Mr. Biden won the election.”

“On one level, such a scenario is entirely plausible based on the weeks and the breadth of public polls that show Mr. Biden with leads or edges in key states.
But this possibility runs headlong into the political difficulties of pulling off such a win, and perhaps even more, the psychological hurdles for Democrats to entertain the idea. Many think that Mr. Trump, having pulled off a stunning win before, could do it again, even if there are differences from 2016 that hurt his chances.”
