Japan confirms first case of person reinfected with coronavirus

Japan confirms first case of person reinfected with coronavirus

The reinfection has health officials worried the illness could stay dormant after signs of recovery.
By Joseph Guzman

Officials in Osaka say a tour bus guide tested positive for COVID-19 for a second time.
There have been a number of cases of reinfection in China.
Japan’s prime minister has asked schools to close in an effort to curb the outbreak.

Japan is reporting its first case of a person becoming reinfected with the coronavirus after showing signs they had fully recovered, according to Reuters.

Osaka’s prefectural government confirmed Wednesday a woman working as a tour bus guide tested positive for coronavirus for the second time after developing a sore throat and chest pain. The woman, who is said to be in her 40s, first tested positive in late January and was discharged from the hospital on Feb. 1 after showing signs of recovery.

Reuters reports Health minister Katsunobu Kato said the government would need to monitor the condition of others who were infected and later discharged as health experts investigate testing positive for COVID-19 after an initial recovery.

‘Not Someone Who Believes in Science’: Fox News Pundit Says ‘Pray on It’ Pence Shouldn’t Be ‘Anywhere Near’ Coronavirus
Published on February 27, 2020 at 11:01 AM ET
By David Edwards – Raw Story

Fox News contributor Jessica Tarlov asserted on Thursday that Vice President Mike Pence is the wrong person to be in charge of fighting the Coronavirus.

“There are deep concerns about putting Mike Pence at least quasi-in charge,” Tarlov told a Fox News panel. “He oversaw an HIV outbreak in Indiana. Instead of going with science and dealing with needle exchanges, he went after Planned Parenthood and people got sick there because of it.”

“Mike Pence is not a scientist, he’s not a doctor, he’s not someone who believes really in science,” she continued. “And I don’t believe that he should be in charge of this of anywhere near the forefront and that is a big concern.”

Fox News host Ed Henry interrupted to object: “You say he doesn’t believe in science.”

“Well, with climate science, he thinks you should pray on it,” Tarlov replied. “If you have HIV, you should go to a doctor. If you have a Coronavirus, you should go to a doctor. And this isn’t about insulting prayer, it’s just saying that that kind of policy and that kind of thinking is outdated and has no place in modern society.”

GOP Rep. Ralph Abraham Announces Retirement, The 26th Republican To Do So

GOP Rep. Ralph Abraham Announces Retirement, The 26th Republican To Do So
By Cristina Cabrera
February 27, 2020 7:53 a.m.

Rep. Ralph Abraham (R-LA) announced on Wednesday that he will not run for reelection.

In his statement, Abraham described how he had met with President Donald Trump on Air Force One in January, during which Trump asked the GOP lawmaker to consider running for another term.

“I thanked him for his leadership and encouragement, and was honest in my reply,” the Louisiana Republican said. “The decision to serve only three terms as a Member of the House is one that I made six years ago, but I very much look forward to supporting the President’s agenda for the remainder of my tenure in Congress and in other capacities moving forward.

Abraham is the 26th House Republican to retire ahead of the 2020 elections, while only five Democrats have decided to do so.

2018 saw a similar GOP exit before the Democrats flipped the House after the midterms.

Why Trump Can't Pardon Roger Stone

Why Trump Can’t Pardon Roger Stone
February 27, 2020 at 9:55 am EST By Taegan Goddard

Corey Brettschneider: “Speculation that President Trump might pardon Roger Stone has reached a fever pitch after Stone’s sentencing by a federal judge and the president’s repeated hints that he thinks the verdict unfair. But fortunately, the Constitution’s framers imagined this nightmare scenario—a suspected criminal president pardoning a co-conspirator—and they put in the Constitution language to legally prohibit the pardon power in exactly this kind of case.”

“Many scholars agree that once a president has been impeached, he or she loses the power to pardon anyone for criminal offenses connected to the articles of impeachment. Less noticed is that even after the Senate’s failure to convict the president, he or she does not regain this power.”

Trump Supporters Have a Predictably Insane Coronavirus Conspiracy Theory

Trump Supporters Have a Predictably Insane Coronavirus Conspiracy Theory
Apparently this all ties back to the Russia investigation.
By Bess Levin
February 27, 2020

There’s an old saying in politics that goes “Let’s not stereotype anyone, but Donald Trump attracts some real wack jobs.” Data points that support this maxim include but are not limited to: the belief among some Trump supporters that God chose the former real estate developer to be president; the belief that an established pathological liar is the most honest man in politics; and the belief that if he’d just had three fewer Big Macs over the last few years, he could’ve lived to be 200. Of course, there’s nothing like the threat of a global pandemic to get already credulous people extra riled up, so now we can add “the belief that the deep state is using the coronavirus to take down the president.”

Politico reports that a number of Trump supporters are pretty sure they’ve uncovered a smoking gun that supports their theory that there is a concerted effort by traitors in the government to weaponize the disease against the president and, apparently, all ties back to the Mueller report. Yes:

One key piece of evidence fueling their theory: A Centers for Disease Control official making public statements on the outbreak is the sister of Rod Rosenstein, the former deputy attorney general who oversaw the Mueller probe and, according to a disputed report, once discussed removing Trump from office. Dr. Nancy Messonnier, head of the CDC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases—who got a shoutout from her brother for attending his 2017 confirmation hearing—warned Americans in a Tuesday media briefing that an outbreak in the U.S. is inevitable. Messonnier’s comments got widespread attention, sparking calls for further actions by the administration, which had long struck a more reassuring note. The furor appeared to catch Trump flat-footed while en route back from his summit with the Indian prime minister, where he had declared the outbreak “very well under control.”

The likes of conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh and Jim Hoft, publisher of the Gateway Pundit, a conspiratorial, pro-Trump site, have seized on the sibling connection, as have a large number of anonymous Twitter accounts. “Rod Rosenstein as we all know definitely worked to undermine the Trump administration, which is oddly exactly what his sister is doing by undermining the more logical and calm message the president’s team has issued on the virus,” charged conservative pundit Wayne Dupree in a Wednesday blog post.

Of course, there’s no evidence whatsoever that health officials like Messonnier have been overstating the threat of the virus, yet a considerable amount suggesting that Trump has downplayed the situation so as to avoid upsetting financial markets. “I’ve heard people jumping on Nancy Messonnier because she told us the truth: that it’s not a matter of if but when,” Representative Tom Cole told reporters on Wednesday, according to Politico. “Isn’t that what you want to hear instead of some pie in the sky?” Apparently, not so much!

In addition to putting two and two together re: Messonnier—who, unlike the president and newly minted coronavirus czar Mike Pence, is an actual doctor who has never helped cause an HIV outbreak that we know of—supporters like Limbaugh have also fingered the media for the inside job. On Monday, the Medal of Freedom recipient told his listeners: “It looks like the coronavirus is being weaponized as yet another element to bring down Donald Trump,” adding, “Now, I want to tell you the truth about the coronavirus…The coronavirus is the common cold, folks. The Drive-By Media hype of this thing as a pandemic, as the Andromeda strain, as, ‘Oh, my God, if you get it, you’re dead’...I think the survival rate is 98%. Ninety-eight percent of people get the coronavirus survive…I believe the way it’s being weaponized is by virtue of the media, and I think that it is an effort to bring down Trump, and one of the ways it’s being used to do this is to scare the investors, to scare people in business. It’s to scare people into not buying Treasury bills at auctions. It’s to scare people into leaving, cashing out of the stock market—and sure enough, as the show began today, the stock market—the Dow Jones Industrial Average—was down about 900 points, supposedly because of the latest news about the spread of the coronavirus.”

Perhaps now that it’s all been laid out as plain as day, you‘ll begin to understand.

Scottish Lawmaker: Reasonable Grounds to Suspect Trump or His Associates ‘Have Been Involved in Serious Crime’
February 27, 2020 at 09:38 AM ET
By David Badash

A Member of the Scottish Parliament is asking his fellow ministers to investigate President Donald Trump’s deals through which he acquired his properties in Scotland, including Trump’s two multi-million dollar losing golf courses. President Trump prizes his Turnberry, Scotland resort, but reports that the American president is using the U.S. federal government to help keep it afloat have dogged him.

MSP Patrick Harvie “said there were reasonable grounds for suspecting that the US president, or people he is connected with, ‘have been involved in serious crime,'” The Scotsman, Scotland’s national newspaper reports.

Harvie is urging lawmakers to seek an apply for an “unexplained wealth order” from a Scottish court, which would allow them to learn how the U.S. president “bankrolled his multimillion acquisitions of land and property in his mother’s homeland.”

An unexplained wealth order (UWO) is a mechanism which allows the Scottish government “to target suspected corrupt foreign officials who have potentially laundered stolen money through the UK.”

If “a suspected corrupt foreign official, or their family, cannot show a legitimate source for their riches,” the Scottish government can seize properties.

Kemp Praise Aides for Purging Voter Rolls
February 26, 2020 at 12:49 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 1 Comment

The House Oversight Committee released an email from then-Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp (R) which told aides “good work” after a newspaper story exposed problems in the way voters were removed from electoral rolls.

He added: “Good work, this story is so complex folks will not make it all the way through it.”

The 2017 story in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution detailed how local election officials were inaccurately removing people from the rolls.

As the coronavirus outbreak worsens across the world, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has carried out its job description and given Americans regular updates and advice to keep themselves safe. However, the briefings have reportedly left President Donald Trump very angry. The Washington Post reports that, during his trip to India over the past few days, the president has become more and more agitated with the CDC and the effect its warnings have had on the U.S. stock markets. Trump reportedly believes the updates have spooked investors, and some White House officials are deeply unhappy with how the situation has been handled by Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar. Trump publicly played down the threat of coronavirus Tuesday while he was reportedly becoming increasingly furious about the stock market’s slide. U.S. markets plummeted for the second straight day Tuesday, bringing the Dow Industrial index’s total loss over the past four days to about 2267 points, or about $1.7 trillion in market value.

A New Leader at White House Personnel Office
February 26, 2020 at 7:25 am EST By Taegan Goddard

Politico: “The White House has hired a college senior to be one of the top officials in its powerful Presidential Personnel Office.”

“James Bacon, 23, is acting as one of the right-hand men to new PPO director John McEntee… Bacon, a senior at George Washington University pursuing a bachelor’s degree, comes from the Department of Transportation, where he briefly worked in the policy shop. Prior to that role, while still taking classes, he worked at the Department of Housing and Urban Development, where he was a White House liaison.”

Despite reality, Trump insists 'we've taken the oil' in Syria

Despite reality, Trump insists 'we've taken the oil' in Syria
"We've taken the oil," Trump said this morning, referring to Syrian oil fields. It's one of his favorite claims, but it's not true.

By Steve Benen

The president certainly seems to enjoy saying this. As regular readers know, Trump started boasting months ago that the United States has "taken" Syrian oil and he's prepared to "militarily stop" those who try to claim it.

Reflecting on the Syrian oil's value, Trump went on to say in October that the United States "should be able to take some," adding, "[W]hat I intend to do, perhaps, is make a deal with an ExxonMobil or one of our great companies to go in there and do it properly." (In context, "it" appeared to refer to extracting oil.)

There's no real defense for this -- it's illegal for a country to send troops into another country to take its natural resources -- but the president continued to echo his message, boasting at a series of campaign rallies about "keeping" Syrian oil.

When Trump spoke at the Economic Club of New York in November, Trump said, in reference to Syrian oil fields, "We kept the oil. You know, we kept the oil." Soon after, sitting in the Oval Office alongside Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Trump echoed the line, boasting, "We're keeping the oil."

Eventually, a Pentagon spokesperson felt compelled to explain that the United States is not, in reality, keeping Syrian oil for ourselves.

And yet, he just keeps saying it.
