Connie Schultz: Welcome to the Dystopia of Alabama

Welcome to the Dystopia of Alabama
By Connie Schultz
May 16, 2019

Let's start with a few facts about the children currently living in Alabama.

Twenty-six percent of them — more than 285,280 — lived in poverty in 2018, which is the most recent year for available data. About 30 percent of Alabama's children living in poverty are younger than 5.

snip//

"The researchers found that children who grew up in families below the federal poverty line had gray matter volumes 8 to 10 percent below normal development."

To be clear, by "gray matter," they mean the brain.

So, that's one measure of how much Alabama values the life of a child.

Here's another: Alabama has the highest infant mortality rate in the country. When it comes to keeping children alive after they're born, Alabama is rock-bottom last.

So, what is Alabama doing to help these children?

Well, we have news.

In the competition for which state is the closest replica of Margaret Atwood's dystopian Republic of Gilead, Alabama is the hands-down winner. It is now the most dangerous state in the country, and the most hostile one, for women of reproductive age.

Merkel: Europe must unite to stand up to China, Russia and US

I never thought I'd see a headline like this. We have joined the bad guys.

Europe must reposition itself to stand up to the challenges posed by its three big global rivals, China, Russia and the US, Angela Merkel has said before her final European election as German chancellor.

Facing challenges that range from Russian interference in elections to China’s economic clout and the US’s monopoly over digital services, Europe needs to get better at putting up a united front, Merkel said in a wide-ranging interview shared with the Guardian.

“There is no doubt that Europe needs to reposition itself in a changed world,” Merkel said in a conversation in her office in Berlin. “The old certainties of the post-war order no longer apply.”

She added: “They [China, Russia and the US] are forcing us, time and again, to find common positions. That is often difficult given our different interests. But we do get this done – think, for example, of our policy regarding the conflict in Ukraine.

“Our policies on Africa, too, now follow a common strategy, which a few years ago would have been unthinkable. So we keep putting one foot in front of the other. However, our political power is not yet commensurate with our economic strength.”

Administration wants to reimburse Taliban's travel expenses

Administration wants to reimburse Taliban’s travel expenses
As if ‘life imitating The Onion’ according to one taxpayer advocate

John M. Donnelly

The Trump administration asked Congress earlier this year for funds to reimburse Afghanistan’s Taliban for expenses the insurgent group incurs attending peace talks, according to a spokesman for the chairman of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense.

The money would cover the Taliban’s costs for expenses such as transportation, lodging, food and supplies, said Kevin Spicer, spokesman for Indiana Democrat Peter J. Visclosky, in a statement for CQ Roll Call.

“The Defense Department requested fiscal 2020 funding to support certain reconciliation activities, including logistic support for members of the Taliban and, in March 2019, they sent a notification letter to the Committee on using fiscal year 2019 funds for similar activities,” Spicer said.

The Pentagon’s request to funnel U.S. funds to the Taliban “would implicate provisions of law concerning material support to terrorists, the Taliban’s ongoing offensive operations against U.S. service members, and their continuing lack of acknowledgement of the government of Afghanistan or the rights of women in Afghan society,” said Spicer.

Consequently, Visclosky’s panel approved on Wednesday a $690.2 billion Defense spending bill for fiscal 2020 that bars any funds for reimbursing the Taliban.

Life imitating ‘The Onion’

Under the request, however, the U.S. government would funnel funds to a violent group that once harbored Osama bin Laden — a fighting force that U.S. troops have been combating for more than 18 years.

The Taliban is a well-funded organization, too. And much of its money has been earned from a drug trade that is killing record numbers of Americans. The group may net at least $800 million a year from opium trafficking and related activities.

Pat Robertson: Alabama 'has gone too far' with 'extreme' abortion law

Pat Robertson: Alabama 'has gone too far' with 'extreme' abortion law
Rachel Frazin

Televangelist Pat Robertson, who is opposed to abortion, criticized an anti-abortion bill passed by the Alabama legislature Tuesday as "extreme."

"I think Alabama has gone too far," he said during a Wednesday appearance on "The 700 Club", referencing the bill's 99-year maximum sentence for doctors who perform abortions and the fact that it does not provide exceptions for rape or incest cases.

He added that he does not think the bill would be upheld by the Supreme Court.

"It's an extreme law, and they want to challenge Roe vs. Wade, but my humble view is that this is not the case we want to bring to the Supreme Court because I think this one will lose," he said.

"The Alabama case, God bless them, they're trying to do something, but I don't think that's the case that I'd want to bring to the Supreme Court," he later reiterated.

The Rude Pundit: Elizabeth Warren Tells Fox "News" to Go Fuck Itself with Roger Ailes's Femur

Elizabeth Warren Tells Fox "News" to Go Fuck Itself with Roger Ailes's Femur

Fuck yeah, Senator Elizabeth Warren, who is running for president, just went to war with Fox "news." In a series of tweets, Warren told Fox to get the fuck away from her with this town hall bullshit. Apparently, Fox invited her to appear on their network of the damned and Sean Hannity, and she declined, explaining, "Fox News is a hate-for-profit racket that gives a megaphone to racists and conspiracists—it’s designed to turn us against each other, risking life and death consequences, to provide cover for the corruption that’s rotting our government and hollowing out our middle class."

snip//

It's about goddamn time one of the Democratic candidates stopped with this whole bullshit idea that they have to "reach" Fox "news" viewers. It turns Fox into the de facto spokesdicks for the mythical "White Working Class," a group that is so much more than Fox-infected assholes (and is also far, far bigger once you remove "white" from the name). And Warren's rejection of Fox turns a spotlight on the "news" network's efforts at stupiding their viewers with a nonstop fecal flow of fear and fuckery. Maybe Kirsten Gillibrand and Pete Buttigieg will back out of their scheduled appearances.

Essentially, Warren just declared war on Fox "news." She went far, far further than just declining the town hall. She went for the throat, naming evil where she sees evil. Warren dug up the rotted whale carcass of Roger Ailes, ripped out his femur, and started fucking Tucker Carlson's ass with it.

Look for Fox to react furiously, as Fox will do, likely calling her everything from "Pocahontas" to "Emma Goldman" (actually, Emma Goldman doesn't have a Disney cartoon, so Fox viewers wouldn't understand it). They'll make her seem like Stalin has been reincarnated and that Warren and AOC are gonna be forcing you to eat organic dirt to stay alive while Rashida Tlaib ululates in your ears.

But Warren wouldn't have started this if she didn't know what she was getting into. She could have politely declined and moved on. This is a war she wants. This shows she knows that you have to kill the troll if you want everyone to be able to cross the bridge.

The Emoluments Clause Could Be a Tipping Point in Trump's Downfall

The Emoluments Clause Could Be a Tipping Point in Trump’s Downfall
Stephen Rohde
May 13, 2019
The obstruction of justice documented in Mueller’s report has gotten more attention, but Trump’s profiting from his office is an open-and-shut impeachment count.

Trump is the only president for at least 40 years who has not liquidated his business assets or put them in a blind trust.

On April 30, a federal district judge rejected Trump’s motion to throw out the lawsuit filed by approximately 201 members of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives alleging that Trump has flagrantly violated the Foreign Emoluments Clause. The case was largely overlooked as national attention has focused on Trump’s obstruction of justice and his efforts to block further congressional scrutiny of his abuses of power.

snip//

Having determined the legal definition of emoluments, both judges found that the plaintiffs’ factual allegations, if proven, met that standard. For example, the attorneys general specifically allege that “foreign governments or their instrumentalities have patronized the Trump International Hotel, spending government funds to stay at the Hotel, eat at its restaurants, and sponsor events in the Hotel's event spaces.” In particular, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia spent $270,000 at the hotel between October 1, 2016, and March 31, 2017, and the Embassy of Kuwait moved its National Day celebration from another hotel to the Trump International Hotel on February 22, 2017, a month after Trump was inaugurated.

Trump’s appeal of Judge Messitte’s ruling was heard by the U.S. Court of Appeals last March but a decision has yet to be issued. At the oral argument, one of the judges questioned whether the president could be sued in a civil action for violating the emoluments clause and that instead the remedy rests with Congress. Ironically, the remedy the Constitution grants Congress is impeachment. Indeed, Edmund Randolph at the Virginia ratifying convention in 1788 remarked that the emoluments clause protected the country against the danger of “the President receiving Emoluments from foreign powers” and asserted that a president who violates the clause “may be impeached.”

Regardless of the outcome of the lawsuits, the litigation provides another ideal opportunity to marshal the evidence supporting the remedy intended by the founders—namely, impeachment.

The Mueller Report established how Trump welcomed the gift of Russian interference in the 2016 election to help defeat his opponent and advance his candidacy. Once in office, Trump has continued to enjoy foreign gifts and benefits. But when he became president, he swore that he would “faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States.” Violating the express terms of the emoluments clauses may be the clearest evidence that Trump has committed “high crimes and misdemeanors,” justifying impeachment.

Rachel Maddow: New Obstruction Investigation Could Catch Ivanka Trump In '50 Tripwires'

Rachel Maddow: New Obstruction Investigation Could Catch Ivanka Trump In ’50 Tripwires’

Maddow said:

I think it has long been assumed that the president might have a kind of tripwire when it comes to investigations, legal liability, getting too close to his adult children. I mean, in this case, according to reporting from Vanity Fair and The New York Times, one of the allegations at issue here for which there’s apparently some sort of documentary trail, is the allegation that lawyer Abbe Lowell specifically told Cohen that he should tell Congress Ivanka Trump had essentially no knowledge of Trump tower Moscow. According to Michael Cohen, that wasn’t true. According to Cohen, Ivanka Trump was regularly briefed on Trump Tower Moscow. Well, if as Cohen alleges, Abbe Lowell was involved in telling Michael Cohen to lie to Congress, specifically about the involvement of Ivanka Trump in that scheme, I mean, that feels like the sort of thing that could trip 50 tripwires all at once, right? That’s sensitive on a lot of different levels. But that is apparently now what the House Intelligence Committee is chasing down and we are being told to expect that that may be in the form of subpoenas soon.

Increased Dem focus on obstruction could send Trump over the edge

The Mueller investigation may be over, but Democrats have taken the baton from the special counsel and they appear to be sprinting with it.

In this instance, as they dig further into the obstruction issue, it could spell trouble for one of Trump’s children and send this president completely over the edge.

Not only would it further implicate the president and his lawyers in an obstruction scheme, but it would show that Trump’s daughter was far more involved in a potential deal with Russia than was previously known.

As Rachel Maddow pointed out on Tuesday, it could set off a series of tripwires – none of which are likely to end well for Donald Trump.

3 Florida radio stations to broadcast Trump speeches every hour until 2020 election

Not the Onion or Borowitz, sadly.

3 Florida radio stations to broadcast Trump speeches every hour until 2020 election
By Justin Wise - 05/14/19 07:48 PM EDT

A media company that operates multiple radio stations in Florida has vowed to broadcast portions of President Trump’s speeches every hour of every day until the 2020 election.

Gulf Coast Media Inc., the owner of the stations "Classic Rock WRBA-FM 95.9," "Country WKNK-FM 'Hank FM'” and "Adult Hits WASJ-FM 'BOB FM,'” announced in a press release that it would air Trump's speeches for the next 18 months.

Samuel Rogatinsky, the owner of the radio station operator based in Bay County, Fla., told The Orlando Sentinel that the stations would broadcast two-minute snippets of Trump's speeches every hour of every day.

“We ran it by a bunch of listeners and people in the area, and nobody’s upset about it. It’s Republican territory,” Rogatinsky said, adding that the stations may sometimes run Trump's speeches twice an hour. “Nobody’s offended by it. It’s not an issue.”

Rogatinsky did not immediately respond to a request for further comment from The Hill.

Gulf Coast Media acknowledged in the news release that continually airing Trump's speeches did not conform to "conventional commercial FM radio." But the organization said that the move was made to "show the community’s sincere appreciation for President Donald Trump’s work in Panama City and Bay County."

Graham Is Introducing a Bill to Increase Detention of Migrant Children From 20 Days to 100 Days

Senator Lindsey Graham Is Introducing a Bill to Increase Detention of Migrant Children From 20 Days to 100 Days
By Chantal Da Silva On 5/14/19 at 12:59 PM EDT

Senator Lindsey Graham plans to introduce immigration legislation on Wednesday that he said would "stop 90 percent of the illegal immigration from Central America."

Breaking down his plan to deter asylum seekers from crossing the U.S. border outside of designated ports of entry, Graham told Sunday Morning Futures host Maria Bartiromo that he wanted to see the number of days migrant children could be held in detention increased from 20 to 100 days.

"We got a perfect storm now because of broken laws," Graham told Bartiromo in a Sunday interview.

"Word is out on the street in Central America, if you bring a minor child with you to America, we can only hold a minor child for 20 days, where we release everybody, including the adults. They never show up for the hearing because it's three years from now," Graham said.

"You can only hold a minor for 20 days. We're going to go to 100 days," he said.

The South Carolina Republican was referring to the "20-day rule" outlined in the 1997 Flores agreement, which stemmed from a Supreme Court case that set the nation's standards on the treatment of migrant children in federal custody.

The 20-day rule is one that Trump administration officials, including President Donald Trump himself, had repeatedly hit back against.

Trump claims he’s seen piles of dead bald eagles underneath windmills: ‘You see them all over the place’
David Edwards
14 May 2019 at 16:08 ET

President Donald Trump on Tuesday claimed that he had seen dead bald eagles “all over the place” because of energy-producing windmills.

“You are under assault,” Trump told a group of natural gas workers in Connecticut. “And now they talk about the Green New Deal. The Green New Deal. Everybody go home, you just lost your Jobs. The Green New Deal, that’s a hoax like the hoax I just went through.”

“Under that deal, everybody in this room gets fired,” he continued. “All of the thousands of guys and women standing in these buildings get fired, they go because under the Green New Deal, they don’t like clean, beautiful natural gas. They don’t like anything.”

Trump noted that progressive politicians “sort of like wind even though it kills all the birds.”

“You want to see a bird cemetery? Go under a windmill sometime,” the president ranted. “You will see the saddest, you got every type of bird. You know, in California you go to jail for five years if you kill a bald eagle. You go under a windmill, you see them all over the place. Not a good situation.”

“But that’s what they were counting on, wind. When the wind doesn’t blow, you don’t watch television that night,” Trump added.
