Republicans Move to Restrict Birth Control
July 2, 2021 at 6:46 am EDT By Taegan Goddard

Molly Jong-Fast: “Republicans have started to blur the lines between birth control and abortion in the hopes of making it harder for American women to obtain either.”

“And nowhere is this clearer than in the Missouri statehouse, where lawmakers debated whether they needed to restrict Medicaid coverage of birth control and limit payments to Planned Parenthood. Yes, as the Kansas City Star reported, lawmakers there spent hours last week in a discussion that ‘resembled a remedial sex-education course.’ It was a tricky play, attacking birth control as a way to attack abortion, and it didn’t work…this time.”

Lawyers find parents of 23 more migrant children separated under Trump

Lawyers find parents of 23 more migrant children separated under Trump
“While we are making steady progress, there are still far too many families who have not been located," said Lee Gelernt of the ACLU.

WASHINGTON — Pro bono lawyers tasked by a federal judge with identifying immigrant families separated by the Trump administration have successfully contacted the parents of 23 more children in the past six weeks, according to a report filed in court Wednesday.

That brings the number of known separated children whose parents have not yet been located down to 368.

Just because the parents have not been located by the lawyers, however, doesn't mean the families remain separated. The parents of some of those 368 children may already have reunited with theiir children on their own, but because of poor record keeping by the Trump administration in 2017 and 2018, when families were systematically separated at the southwest border, their status and whereabouts have remained unknown.

The lawyers said in the court filing Wednesday that they believe 275 of the 368 remaining children’s parents were deported after they were separated. Efforts to track those parents down in their home countries are ongoing, the lawyers said. Approximately 80 children’s parents are believed to be in the U.S., and, the lawyers said, the government has not provided any information on the 13 other children or their parents.

Those being contacted now are largely part of a group of separated families that was unknown until a 2019 report from the Health and Human Services Inspector General revealed that potentially thousands of additional families had been separated without the public or lawyers advocating for separated families knowing. The Trump administration did not provide a list of those names until late 2019, according to Lee Gelernt, deputy director of the ACLU’s Immigrants’ Rights Project and one of the lead attorneys representing the separated families.

Howard Students and Alumni Are Furious With Phylicia Rashad's Support of Bill Cosby

Howard University’s newest dean celebrated Bill Cosby’s prison release. A number of students and alums, many of whom are survivors of sexual assault, want her gone.

Mere hours after Bill Cosby’s TV wife Phylicia Rashad celebrated her former co-star’s shock release from prison, she attempted to walk back her joyous statement following a tidal wave of backlash.

Cosby, 83, walked out of a Pennsylvania prison on Wednesday, serving just three years of his three to 10-year sentence for sexually assaulting Andrea Constand in 2004. The state’s supreme court suddenly overturned the disgraced comic’s 2018 conviction on a legal technicality—it found the prosecutor couldn’t go back on his predecessor’s declaration not to charge him.

Rashad, who played Clair Huxtable alongside Cosby for eight seasons on The Cosby Show, was thrilled. “FINALLY!!!! A terrible wrong is being righted—a miscarriage of justice is corrected,” she not only tweeted, but shared on Instagram.

It did not go over well for Rashad, who was tapped in May by Howard University to be its new dean of College of Fine Arts, recently renamed to honor the late actor and former student Chadwick Boseman.

The 73-year-old was immediately slammed, as people raised the question of how students could feel comfortable reporting instances of sexual assault to a dean who had rejoiced in the release of an alleged serial predator who had 60 women publicly come forward to accuse him of assault?

Supreme Court leaves Arizona voting restrictions in place

Supreme Court leaves Arizona voting restrictions in place
By John Kruzel - 07/01/21 10:08 AM EDT

The Supreme Court on Thursday ruled that a pair of Republican-backed Arizona voting restrictions do not run afoul of federal law, rejecting a Democratic challenge and dealing a blow to voting rights advocates.

The 6-3 decision, which fell along familiar ideological lines, comes as a raft of GOP-crafted voting limits are introduced and passed across the country, with Democrats and civil rights groups turning to courts to argue the new measures threaten to suppress the vote of racial minorities.

One Arizona policy at issue in Thursday’s case requires provisional ballots cast in the wrong precinct to be discarded. The second measure makes it illegal for most third parties to deliver ballots for others, a practice critics refer to as “ballot harvesting.”

Nicolle Wallace Tells Democrats To Hold 1/6 Hearings In Primetime To Expose Republicans

I love this idea!!

Nicolle Wallace Tells Democrats To Hold 1/6 Hearings In Primetime To Expose Republicans

MSNBC’s Nicolle Wallace had a great suggestion for House Democrats to hold the 1/6 Committee hearings in primetime.

https://twitter.com/i/status/1410337559654305796

Wallace said on her MSNBC show Deadline: White House:

I don’t think the Republicans are the ones to watch. It’s how savvy can Democrats be with just how bipartisan this has been. It was a bipartisan vote to impeach, to convict the ex-president. It wasn’t enough. It was a bipartisan vote to create a commission and came up short in the senate. What is partisan is the obstruction.

The only thing partisan has been the Republican lies and refusal to get to the bottom of it. Democrats have an opportunity to have fact-finding inquiries and hearings to put them on in prime time and to educate the American people about something Republicans don’t want them to see. Talk about making it impossible to look away. The only partisan approach to the insurrection has been the Republicans.

Democrats Should Turn The 1/6 Hearings Into Must Watch Television

The United States government was attacked by domestic terrorists. Republicans are trying to cover up the attack and don’t want there to be an investigation.

Beyond politics and elections, it is vital for Democrats to put these hearings in a position of maximum visibility for the good of the country.

The American people need to know the facts about what happened on January 6.

The best way to ensure that the public sees the hearings is to hold them when people are at home and likely to be watching. Democrats could make it impossible for Republicans to hide and cover up the truth about the attack on the Capitol.

MSNBC's Claire McCaskill: Once Trump Org. Goes Belly Up, Trump Will Be "Out There Selling Pillows"

MSNBC’s Claire McCaskill: Once Trump Org. Goes Belly Up, Trump Will Be “Out There Selling Pillows” [VIDEO]

On Wednesday, news broke that charges could be delivered tomorrow against the Trump Organization and CFO Allen Weisselberg. While Trump is not likely to be charged tomorrow, his long-time company is in serious jeopardy.

And what would Trump do if his real estate company dissolved? That what the question Nicolle Wallace asked her panel tonight. Commentator Claire McCaskill hilariously predicted that he’d end up selling pillows.

The former Missouri senator began, “Well, first of all, we know what the ex-president will do. He will lie. He will try to pretend that this is some unfairness on the part of the criminal justice system. But we also know what he cares about. And what he cares about is his branding. He has built the brand and the Trump Organization over decades with the help of the man that will be indicted tomorrow.”

https://twitter.com/i/status/1410364163491311616

McCaskill continued:

“So, all of that is really going to hurt Donald Trump, whether he admits it or not, because his business will never be looked on as a shining success again by the people who need to see it as a positive, the bankers, the funders, the investors. He’s done. He is done as a businessman. He’s going to be out there selling pillows in about ten minutes.”

For his entire life, Trump has always had his company to fall back on. If that goes away, his fortunes will change dramatically. Like McCaskill says, though, he will likely find a way to squeeze some money out of his supporters.

Rep. Jackie Speier Rips GOP For 'Political' Thumbs Down On 1/6 Committee

Rep Rips GOP For 'Political' Thumbs Down On 1/6 Committee
Rep. Jackie Speier shreds her fascist GOP colleagues for voting against the Select Committee to investigate the insurrection, comparing them to the Jonestown cult members who shot her 40 years ago.

Just now, nearly every House Republican voted against forming a select committee to investigate the January 6 insurrection. Mind you, Republicans were against forming an independent committee, too, but more of them would have been okay with that. Just not nearly enough to allow it to happen. A select committee, though? Guidelines set forth by Speaker Nancy Pelosi? Nope, nope, nope. In fact, only two Republicans voted in favor of this investigation: Reps. Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger.

During the debate leading up to the vote, California Rep. Jackie Speier had some words for her fascist GOP colleagues who dared open their filthy pieholes to whine that the select committee and its investigation was "political" in nature, which was why they had a problem with it. She reminded them why no one is more suited than she to recognize the danger they were all in on January 6th.

"You know, my heart's racing right now, and I'm trembling. In part because I'm recalling what happened to me on January 6th, when I was in that gallery, had to climb around the other side, and then lie there on the floor. And then I heard a shot ring out. And it took me back over forty years ago, lying on an airstrip in Guyana, about to lose my life. And I thought at that moment, 'My god, I survived Guyana, but I'm not gonna survive this, in the house of democracy in the country in which I was born,'" she recounted.

"For the members on the other side of the aisle to call this 'political,' let me remind you, it WAS political, because the President of the United States at the time thought it was FUN, and an act of great PATRIOTISM to come up here and try to overturn the election. So, you may call it political. It WAS political. But we're going to find out why it happened, and we're going to make sure it never happens again," she finished up.

Remember, Jackie Speier was 28 years old when she joined Rep. Leo Ryan's delegation to investigate Jonestown in Guyana. Cult members ambushed the Congressional delegation on the airstrip, killing five of the 24 members of the Congressional group. Speier was shot five times at point blank range, and left on the tarmac for 22 hours before help arrived.

And she was afraid, on January 6th, that her life would end serving her country, in her own Capitol building, certifying her nation's own election, at the hands of her own deranged Republican citizens, doing the bidding of her own nation's deranged, authoritarian, Republican cult leader.
