'The House Is On Fire': Joy Reid Tells Dems To Stop Treating 2020 Like A Normal Election

‘The House Is On Fire’: Joy Reid Tells Dems To Stop Treating 2020 Like A Normal Election

MSNBC’s Joy Reid had some tough love for Democrats on Saturday days after 2020 hopefuls met in Detroit for a pair of debates that focused heavily on their own policy differences and not so much on the damage Donald Trump has done to the country.

“Fighting with each other about the details of your healthcare plans is not going to help you beat Donald Trump,” the MSNBC host said to Democrats. “When the house is on fire, you don’t discuss what kind of begonias you’re going to plant in the window sill, because the house is on fire!”

“This isn’t even hard,” Reid added. “He’s making it easy for you.”
https://twitter.com/i/status/1157674683434708999

Reid said:

Now, Democrats, and I mean this as tough love, fighting with each other about the details of your health care plans is not going to help you beat Donald Trump. Mayor Pete is right that Trump and his party are going to call all of your health care bills socialism. They’re going to call all of you open borders communists. Keep your eyes on the job. The house is on fire. Tell us what this president has done to set the house on fire, and how you are going to put it out. When the house is on fire, you don’t discuss what kind of begonia’s you’re going to plant in the window sill because the house is on fire. Just tell us what Trump has broken and what you’re going to do to fix it. This isn’t even hard. He’s making it easy for you.

Democrats should stop treating 2020 as a normal election

Some Democrats running for president seem to be treating this election like a typical contest between two parties duking it out over opposing policy proposals.

But there is nothing normal about this election. As Joy Reid said on Saturday, the house is on fire.

Democrats are right to put forward a positive vision for the future, but they shouldn’t tear each other apart in the process. Certainly, they shouldn’t spend an entire primary debate attacking former President Barack Obama more than the current category-five disaster who occupies the White House.

There are a lot of great policies being offered up by the 20+ Democratic candidates seeking the presidency. But none of them are worth the paper they’re written on if they don’t defeat Trump in November.

If Democrats treat 2020 like just another presidential election – and If they keep tearing each other apart with counterproductive purity tests instead of explaining why this president is a clear and present danger – then Donald Trump will win.

Pentagon chief says US looking to put intermediate-range missiles in Asia

Pentagon chief says US looking to put intermediate-range missiles in Asia
By Ellen Mitchell - 08/03/19 07:12 AM EDT

SYDNEY, Australia — Defense Secretary Mark Esper said Saturday he hoped to soon place ground-launched, intermediate-range missiles in Asia, a day after the United States pulled itself from a Cold War era arms control pact.

“Yes, I would like to,” Esper told reporters traveling with him to Sydney when asked whether he was considering deploying such missiles in Asia.

“I would prefer [in] months, I just don’t have the latest state of play on timelines for either a cruise missile or long-range missile ... but these things tend to take longer than you expect.”

He also said such a missile would be “important” to have in the Asia-Pacific region, but could not speculate on where it would be placed as discussions with allies would need to take place, among other factors.

Esper brushed aside a likely tense reaction from China to such a U.S. deployment, saying that more than 80 percent of Beijing’s inventory “is intermediate range systems, so that shouldn’t surprise them that we would want to have a like capability.”

Trump admin ends family-based reunification programs for Haitians and Filipino World War II vets

WHY?? Just to be mean, I suspect. How many WWII Vets are actually left??

Trump admin ends family-based reunification programs for Haitians and Filipino World War II vets

Updated 2045 GMT (0445 HKT) August 2, 2019

Washington (CNN)The Trump administration is moving to end family-based reunification programs for Haitians and Filipino World War II veterans.

US Citizenship and Immigration Services announced Friday that it will terminate the Haitian Family Reunification Parole program and the Filipino World War II Veterans Parole program, which were designed to promote family reunification.

"Parole" programs allow certain family members of US citizens or Green Card holders to temporarily enter or remain in the United States, even if they would otherwise not be allowed entry.

The administration argues that these should be done on a "case-by-case" basis, rather than category.
The Filipino World War II program went into effect in 2016, allowing some veterans and their spouses to request certain family members be allowed into the US.

Last month, Sen. Mazie Hirono, who lobbied for the program during the Obama administration, encouraged eligible veterans last month to apply for the program, which was set to expire in June 2021.

"Facing a decades-long visa backlog, thousands of our aging Filipino World War II Veterans have been unable to reunite with their family members still living in the Philippines," Hirono, a Hawaii Democrat, said in a statement at the time. "But thanks to the Filipino World War II Veterans Parole Program, nearly 300 families have been reunited in America."

Ezra Klein: The media amplifies Trump's racism. Should it stop?

The media amplifies Trump’s racism. Should it stop?
Perhaps, to receive the coverage he seeks, Trump should have to normalize himself.

Does sunlight disinfect, or does it make things grow?

I don’t write this piece as a media critic. I write it as a journalist who believes our fundamental duty is to inform. I started Wonkblog at the Washington Post, and then co-founded Vox, with the intention of shining light on important stories that went ignored, or unexplained, amid the frenzy of the news cycle. As a writer, I have written tens of thousands of words about Trump’s worst comments. As an editor, I have assigned dozens of stories on them. I know the peculiar mix of moral urgency, journalistic values, and competitive pressure that generates our news cycles.

But it is hard for me to look at American politics in 2019 and say that what we are doing is working. Is the public more informed? Are the incentives we’ve constructed leading to a healthier national debate? If the answer is no — and I think it is — then we need to be open to rethinking the decisions that drive our coverage.

Let me start by being transparent about my own thinking. When I choose to cover racist comments like the ones Trump made, my implicit rationale for focusing on that story rather than anything else is something like this: It is newsworthy that the president of the United States is an unreconstructed racist. It is important that the public knows he is an unreconstructed racist. Sunlight is the best disinfectant.

But as the media scholar Whitney Phillips has argued, the problem lurks inside the metaphor. Sunlight isn’t only, or even mainly, a disinfectant. What sunlight mostly does is help things grow.
When Trump says of his racist arguments that “many people agree with me,” I agree with him. I believe, as many do, that there’s a lot of racism in America, and that one reason we don’t see more of it is it’s held in check by social opprobrium.

What I fear Trump is doing, with the media — including, at times, me — as his accomplice, is suffusing one of the hardiest weeds in American life with sunlight. These controversies are a constant signal to racists. They say, in short: You are not alone. You do not have to hide. You have powerful allies.

Trump signals he may choose a loyalist to run intelligence agencies after Dan Coats leaves

Yea, quelle surprise.

Trump signals he may choose a loyalist to run intelligence agencies after Dan Coats leaves
It's the latest skirmish in an ongoing war between Trump and the U.S. Intelligence Community.

The White House signaled this week that it may choose a loyalist as interim director of national intelligence after departing Director Dan Coats steps down on August 15.

Under current law, Coats would be replaced by Sue Gordon, principal deputy director of national intelligence and a widely respected career official, until the Senate can confirm a permanent replacement. But the White House has asked the Office of Director of National Intelligence for a list of its senior officials, signaling that it could be looking for an interim head who is more ideologically loyal to Trump.

The news, reported Friday by The Daily Beast, confirms an earlier report by CNN that the White House is looking to bypass the line of succession in order to name a different acting intelligence chief.

That might not even be legal, as CNN reported. Senate Intelligence Committee Chair Richard Burr (R-NC), whose committee oversees the U.S. Intelligence Committee, told CNN that the president can choose whomever he wants, though Burr went on to praise Gordon.

“Well, the White house certainly has that ability, but she’s more than capable of handling that job,” Burr told CNN. “I would be shocked, because that’s what principal deputies are in place for.”

Mark Sanford Explains How Trump's Racism Is Killing The GOP

Mark Sanford Explains How Trump’s Racism Is Killing The GOP

Former Rep. Mark Sanford said that Trump’s rhetoric is turning the Republican Party into the party of white men and making it impossible for the GOP to grow.
https://twitter.com/i/status/1157306474881789953
Sanford said on MSNBC, “It needs to branch out. To state the obvious, some of the president’s rhetoric is destructive. It’s harmful not only in selling a message but building a party. If we dwindle to being a party of white men we have a real problem given the trendlines within our country.”

A lot of focus gets placed on the number of people who are leaving the Republican Party as a representation of the damage that Trump is doing, but there is a flip side to that coin, and that’s the people who won’t consider becoming Republicans because of Trump.

Republican spent decades prior to the tea party movement reaching out to Hispanic and Latino voters. Trump has turned those potential voters into targets for his racism. Republicans owed George W. Bush’s reelection to suburban white women. Under Trump, those women are resisting the Republican Party.

It is a bit of a chicken and egg argument. Is Trump a symptom or the disease that is killing the Republican Party? He could possibly be both. Racism and extremism put Trump into office, but those beliefs as policy are killing the Republican Party.

If the Republican Party become the white man party, it will go extinct. Trump is both the last gasp howl of white male political privilege and the big bang event the could wipe Republicans off of the political landscape.

Rep. Will Hurd's surprise retirement is big, bad news for the GOP

Rep. Will Hurd's surprise retirement is big, bad news for the GOP
Aug. 2, 2019, 8:48 AM EDT
By Chuck Todd, Mark Murray and Carrie Dann

WASHINGTON — For all of the attention on the divided Democrats on display at this week’s presidential debates, the GOP might have received worse news on Thursday.

Rep. Will Hurd, R-Texas, announced he won’t seek re-election in 2020 – the biggest House GOP retirement since Paul Ryan’s in 2018.

It’s also the sixth House GOP retirement in just the last two weeks, per NBC’s Alex Moe.

Why the Hurd news is significant:

It makes it much more likely the GOP will lose the district in 2020 (Hillary Clinton carried it in ’16); the Cook Political Report has already moved it to Lean D.

It makes it that much harder for the GOP to win control of Congress – Republicans need to flip 18 seats, and losing Hurd’s TX-23 district raises the number to 19.

Like Ryan’s announcement in 2018, it sends the message to GOP donors and potential recruits that flipping the House might be out of reach for Republicans.

It eliminates more diversity for the GOP — Hurd was the sole African-American member of the House Republican caucus.

And when it comes to the immigration debate, it robs the GOP of their only member representing a district on the U.S.-Mexico border.

snip//

The fewer Will Hurd-like members running in 2020 reduces the number of moderate/non-Trump Republicans who would eagerly go to the polls for those representatives – and then still hold their nose and vote for the president.

The Republican Party is getting smaller and smaller, and that isn’t good news for an incumbent Republican president.

The Non-Trump Wing of the GOP Wants Out
August 2, 2019 at 8:53 am EDT By Taegan Goddard

First Read: “Think about the other GOP retirements we’ve seen – Reps. Susan Brooks, Martha Roby, and now Hurd.”

“And these Republicans parachuting out of the Republican Party underscore how vulnerable Trump really is, despite the growing economy. The fewer Will Hurd-like members running in 2020 reduces the number of moderate/non-Trump Republicans who would eagerly go to the polls for those representatives – and then still hold their nose and vote for the president.”

“The Republican Party is getting smaller and smaller, and that isn’t good news for an incumbent Republican president.”

Playbook: “If you are a House Republican, this has been an absolutely gutting few weeks. And, truly, if someone is trying to spin you on how the political picture is not that bad for the House GOP right now — at this moment — you ought to discount them as a political professional or analyst. Because it’s really, really bad, deflating and discouraging.”

Air Force chief orders stand down to combat rising number of suicides

Air Force chief orders stand down to combat rising number of suicides
Jeff Schogol
August 01, 2019 at 02:33 PM

Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David Goldfein has ordered all units to take a day before Sept. 15 to focus on preventing airmen from taking their own lives.

"Suicide is an adversary that is killing more of our airmen than any enemy on the planet," Goldfein write in a July 31 memo to commanders, which Task & Purpose obtained. "You and I have sworn to 'defend against all enemies, foreign and domestic.' Suicide attacks sometimes with and without warning. Make this tactical pause matter. Make it yours and make it personal."

Last year, Goldfein asked the entire Air Force to think about what prompts airmen to go from hopeful trainees at Basic Military Training to deciding that killing themselves is the only answer.

At the time, 50 airmen had committed suicide, Goldfein wrote.

"I would never have predicted that a year later we would stand today at 78 suicides," Goldfein write. If we do nothing, we will end 2019 with upwards of 150+. Hopeful to hopeless ... what is going on? It is our job to find out."

The Four Politicians Who Really Need to Go Back to Where They Came From (Part 1)

Guest Post: The Four Politicians Who Really Need to Go Back to Where They Came From (Part 1)
(Another post from the Rude Pundit's designated millennial guest blogger, R. Sharp. His views do not necessarily reflect the views of all millennials because that would be fucking dumb.)

So, two weeks ago that bloated, white supremacist king of idiots told four congresswomen of color - Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Ayanna Pressley, and Rashida Tlaib - to go back to where they came from and accused them of hating their own country. Not surprising whatsoever considering President Dipshit has been plunging America into the kind of stink-filled swamp he said he would drain in the first place. I’m not even fazed by whatever atrocious thing he says or does. Everything just provides extra motivation for me to vote him and all of his taint-licking enablers out in 2020. Not only has this been the most ineffective and cruel administration in modern American politics, it’s also boasted an impressive collection of morons. It takes a special kind of mental deficiency to tell four Congresswoman to go back to where they came from when three of them were born in the fucking United States and one is a naturalized citizen. Much like that play-wife Melania.

Here are the first two of four people who actually hate what America stands for.

First, of course, there's Trump. The grotesque orange monster doesn’t care about anybody except for himself (and Ivanka, but only after she’s done lubing his cashew dick to a shine). He relishes pulling America down into this divisive shit storm, because it distracts us from what’s really going on. Think about it: he attacks Amazon and other companies as their stock drowns. Here's my theory: He starts a trade war with China and the market falls. In the background, he has his shills buy up stock for him. He changes his mind, market shares rise again, and there you have it. He’s supposedly made billions. All he cares about is money, but we live in a capitalist dystopia now and things like this should just be expected. Frankly, that just scratches the surface of his hatred for America.

What ticks me off about him and his goddamned Republican henchman is that they pay excessive lip service to the integrity of our democracy. But, they’ve taken every active step to chip away at it. From election security to voter suppression, Republicans have known for a long time they can’t win the popular vote. They need the Electoral College or the Supreme Court, or to enlist aid from a hostile foreign government. Republicans will stop at nothing to ensure that their enraged clementine will remain in power. America was built on the idea that we didn’t bow down to kings and dictators who employ these exact tactics to weaken the foundations of our democracy. Trump is by far the most un-American president we’ve ever had. He will drag this country into oblivion as long as he can see dollar signs at the end.

Obviously, Mitch McConnell is by far the most damaging member of the Republican-controlled Senate that’s been reaming our asses since 2011. He recently said that he’d be delighted to be called the “grim reaper for progressive policies,” which include such Communist nightmares like addressing climate change, ensuring millions have adequate healthcare, and making the top 1% pay their fair share of taxes. What he’s basically saying is, “As long as I’m taken care of, I could give two shits about the rest of you plebes. Now please, keep voting for me and my horrible motherfuckers.” If ensuring the peace of mind of lobbyists and politicians while casting the public aside isn’t awful enough, there's his whiny bitch approach to Russian election interference.

Moscow Mitch doesn’t like when he gets called out for being a Russian asset. We know that President Obama approached Comrade McConnell in 2016 and wanted to launch a bi-partisan rebuke against potential Russian election interference. Mitch curled up into his shell and refused to do such a thing. God forbid the Senate Majority Leader ensure our democracy remains strong and secure. Hell, there were Senate elections involved. I mean it’s not like he took an oath to “defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic,” or anything, right? Moscow Mitch is a liar and a traitor. He would gladly hand his balls over to Putin to ensure Trump a second term.

(Tomorrow: The other two Republicans who can get the fuck out of here.)
