Eric Trump Takes The Fifth As New York AG Tightens Criminal Noose

Eric Trump Takes The Fifth As New York AG Tightens Criminal Noose

Eric Trump, the president’s son, is taking the Fifth Amendment and refusing to be interviewed by the New York State Attorney General.

The Washington Post reported:

In the filing, signed by a deputy to Attorney General Letitia James, the attorney general’s office said it is investigating Trump’s use of “Statements of Financial Condition” — documents Trump sent to lenders, summarizing his assets and debts.

The filing asks a New York state judge to compel the Trump Organization to provide information it has been withholding from investigators — including a subpoena seeking an interview with the president’s son Eric.

….

The filing said that Eric Trump had been scheduled to be interviewed in the investigation in late July, but abruptly canceled that interview. The filing says that Eric Trump is now refusing to be interviewed, with Eric Trump’s lawyers saying “we cannot allow the requested interview to go forward … pursuant to those rights afforded to every individual under the Constitution.”

Eric Trump is an official in the Trump Organization. The most recent filing from the New York State Attorney General, which is a different investigation from the one being conducted by Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance is proof that there is a very real possibility that Trump and his kids could soon be facing criminal charges for bank fraud.

Trump lost multiple court decisions last week in his bid to keep his tax returns out of the hands of prosecutors. The walls are closing in on the Trump family, as what appears to be a business built on decades of fraud could land multiple members of the Trump family in prison.

GOP Will Not Write a 2020 Platform, Pledges Undying Trump Support Instead

GOP Will Not Write a 2020 Platform, Pledges Undying Trump Support Instead
the national interest Aug. 23, 2020
By Jonathan Chait

Modern presidential conventions are inherently propagandistic affairs, usually devoted to a mix of glitzy patches for the presidential nominee, the vice-president, and the party as a whole. The 2020 Republican National Convention has altered the traditional emphasis, which is now devoted almost entirely to glorifying its presidential nominee. President Trump will speak on all four nights of the convention, rather than just one. Half the featured speakers are members of his family:

And perhaps most remarkably of all, the party has announced it will forego a platform altogether. In lieu of a document attempting to define the party’s beliefs and priorities, the RNC simply states that it agrees with everything Trump has done and will do:

The official excuse is that the coronavirus has made it impossible for the party to get together and write a platform: “The Republican National Committee (RNC) has significantly scaled back the size and scope of the 2020 Republican National Convention in Charlotte due to strict restrictions on gatherings and meetings, and out of concern for the safety of convention attendees and our hosts.” Yet somehow the Democrats managed to come up with a platform without killing anybody.

What’s most remarkable about the personality-cult character of the Republican Party is that its leader is deeply unpopular with the public. Previous conventions have convened to support Republican incumbents who were genuinely respected by the public (Ronald Reagan, Dwight Eisenhower) without prostrating themselves like this. Why would the party, and its candidates running for office at every level, define themselves so thoroughly with a president who has never even briefly held the support of half the country?

snip//

But his abuses of power and contempt for the basic requirements of his job have become matters for his party first to ignore, and then to celebrate. The GOP has been subsumed into the twisted personality of a single man in a way no modern American party ever has. The official disregard of any platform — save whatever Trump says — is the most perfectly fitting encapsulation of the GOP in 2020.

GOOD STUFF:

The Washington Post editorial page kicked off a rare campaign-season effort where it’s going to routinely publish pieces detailing the harm four more years of Trump would do to America. The effort began on Sunday, with “A second Trump term might injure the democratic experiment beyond recovery”:

The capitulation of the Republican Party has been nauseating. Misbehavior that many people vowed never to accept as normal has become routine.

A second term might injure the experiment beyond recovery.

And so, over the coming weeks, we will do something else we have never done before: We will publish a series of editorials on the damage this president has caused — and the danger he would pose in a second term. And we will unabashedly urge you to do your civic duty and vote: Vote early and vote safely, but vote

Eric Boehlert: If Biden lied like Trump, he wouldn't be allowed on TV

If Biden lied like Trump, he wouldn't be allowed on TV
Normalizing GOP convention

We know the lying will be ceaseless because untruths define Trump's presidency. He uses the avalanche of falsehoods not just for partisan political gain, but to chip away at our democracy — to undermine the country's faith in shared facts. Given that precedent, does television news bear some responsibility for helping Trump spread dangerous lies about a raging public health crisis, by granting him a primetime platform four nights running?

"It is a genuine dilemma," Mark Lukasiewicz tells me. He's the Dean of the Lawrence Herbert School of Communication at Hofstra University and served as Senior Vice President of Specials at NBC News. "News networks should not knowingly propagate lies and disinformation."

I'd wager that if Democratic nominee Joe Biden lied the way Trump does — without pause, and without apology — he wouldn't be allowed on TV. Because television news would never normalize a Democratic madman.

snip//

We don't know what Trump's speeches this week will include, but based on recent comments from him it's certainly possible these wild and false claims will be included in his primetime address:

• The FDA is covering up a cure for the pandemic.

• Democrats want to keep schools closed so polling places won't be open in November.

• Students are "almost immune" to the virus.

• Voting by mail spreads the virus.

• Covid-19 will soon "disappear" and we're in the "closing moments of the pandemic."

• 99% of Covid-19 infections are harmless.

• The CDC is "lying" about the pandemic.

If Joe Biden peddled lies like this, he wouldn't be allowed on TV.

The Rude Pundit: Biden and Harris Believe You Deserve Sanity in Your Daily Lives

Biden and Harris Believe You Deserve Sanity in Your Daily Lives

Everyone is talking about Joe Biden and Kamala Harris's speeches at the Democratic National Convention this past week as being a return of empathy or decency, but I'd go one further with another overarching theme: "Remember sanity?" It was truly like watching a funhouse mirror version of our reality, except it took the warped world around us and made it look natural again. It was honestly like you could exhale and not just wonder what insane shit might follow after the last round of insane shit.

That was what Biden and Harris imparted: a sense that we could possibly exist in a normal nation, one that wasn't constantly on the brink of exploding in violence or just collapsing into itself, unable to bear the weight of one man's insatiable ego.
Harris vividly described our national anxiety: "We're at an inflection point. The constant chaos leaves us adrift. The incompetence makes us feel afraid. The callousness makes us feel alone. It's a lot." Then she went full inspirational speaker: "And here's the thing: We can do better and deserve so much more."

For his part, Biden told us the things that we deserve in a newly-sane America, like a national plan to deal with the coronavirus (although it's likely at least another 100,000 of us will die before we even get to January 20, 2021). And he laid out the choice in terms that Joseph Campbell's ghost would approve of: "We can choose the path of becoming angrier, less hopeful and more divided. A path of shadow and suspicion. Or we can choose a different path, and together, take this chance to heal, to be reborn, to unite. A path of hope and light."

snip//

When Republicans and the right-wing commentariat declared that Biden and Harris and the whole DNC were "angry" or presenting a "dark" perspective on the nation, it's bullshit because they weren't angry at the United States. They were angry at how dark Trump and the GOP have made the country. It would be ludicrous not to be angry, and the whole thing could have been 100 times angrier and still not approached the level of anger that the bastards deserve.

Because the implication of the showing of empathy is that Trump treats us with antipathy, the implication of the fostering of decency is that Trump is indecent, and the implication of the return of sanity is that Trump is insane.

Essentially, Biden and Harris are promising that we can take one fucking terrible thing off the table: the thought that our government is actively, intentionally harming us just for shits and giggles. And then we can work to actually make things better. At this point, goddamn, that's enough.

Fox News Hosts Lavish Praise On Biden's DNC Speech: 'Best He's Ever Been'

Fox News Hosts Lavish Praise On Biden’s DNC Speech: ‘Best He’s Ever Been’
Chris Wallace, Bret Baier, Dana Perino and Karl Rove all gave the former vice president high marks.
By Ed Mazza

Fox News hasn’t been friendly territory for former Vice President Joe Biden, but many of the conservative network’s personalities offered praise for the Democratic presidential candidate’s acceptance speech on Thursday night.

Although President Donald Trump has tried to portray Biden as “not all there” and “mentally shot” as well as a captive of the far left, Fox News anchor Chris Wallace said the president will have a tough time with that argument after Biden’s speech at the Democratic National Convention.

“I thought that he blew a hole, a big hole, in that characterization,” Wallace said. “It seems to me that after tonight, Donald Trump is going to have to run against a candidate, not a caricature.”

Fellow Fox News personality Bret Baier was similarly effusive about Biden’s performance.

“He’s not known for his public speaking, but this ― I’ve been seeing him speak on the stump many, many times ― was the best he’s been as far as his delivery,” Baier said.

Fox News host Dana Perino said Biden “hit a home run in the bottom of the ninth.”

“He had pace, rhythm, energy, emotion and delivery,” she said. “I think if he looks back, he’s gonna say, that’s probably the best speech of his life.”

...DeJoy Astonishingly Tells Senate He 'Was Unaware' Mailboxes and Sorting Machines Were Being Remov

WE SHOULD TRUST YOU WHY?
‘Had No Idea’: DeJoy Astonishingly Tells Senate He ‘Was Unaware’ Mailboxes and Sorting Machines Were Being Removed
Published on August 21, 2020 at 10:25 AM ET
By David Badash

Postmaster General Louis DeJoy claims he “had no idea” that mailboxes and mail sorting machines were being removed. “I was made aware when everybody else was made aware,” DeJoy says, while claiming they are “not needed.”

DeJoy is a top Trump and GOP mega-donor who was installed over the objections of the vice chairman of the USPS Board of Governors. Right now he is testifying before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee.

“Since my arrival we moved 700 post collection boxes, of which I had no idea but that that was a process so that that was a process when we found out when I found out about,” DeJoy told the Senators. He called it “a normal process that’s been around for since, you know, it’s been around 50 years,” and promised to resume the removal of the mailboxes after the election.

Speaking about the removal of high-volume multi-million dollar mail sorting machines, DeJoy said, “this is a process that I was unaware about it’s been around for a couple of years now, we evaluate our machine capacity.”

DeJoy also claimed he had no knowledge of an email sent to post offices directing them to not reconnect any mail sorting machines.

Obama Tells Us We're in Danger and We Better Fucking Act Like We Are

snip//

And most forcefully, and most shockingly, we heard from Barack Obama how fucked up shit is under Trump and how much more fucked up shit will get if Trump is re-elected. Like Michelle Obama scaring the shit out of us on Monday, the fact that President Cool Guy, Mister Hope and Change himself, is saying things like "This administration has shown it will tear our democracy down if that’s what it takes for them to win" is downright terrifying. All I can think about is the access he has to information that we don't know and the shit he must have seen, even beyond the distressing daily fuckery, to make him break an unspoken protocol in modern times that ex-presidents don't flat-out attack sitting presidents.

But more than any previous president, Obama deserves the right to come at Trump. President Fucko the Buffoon lies on a daily basis about Obama's accomplishments, whether it's shitting on the smooth-running economy that Trump inherited (and claims was in shambles, which is demonstrably, factually false) or taking credit for the passage of the Veterans Choice Program (which was signed into law in 2014, when Trump was conspicuously not president) or making up a fictional tale about Obama ordering "spying" on the Trump campaign (when it was the Justice Department concerned because Paul Manafort and others...you know what? Fuck it. Either you know it or you don't).

snip//

It's not just that there was real fear in Obama's eyes and real concern in his voice. There was a barely contained rage, as if he was saying, "Don't be stupid. Don't be lazy or discouraged. Don't crawl up your own ass because you didn't get the candidate you want. Don't be selfish dicks. And don't let the motherfuckers prevent you from voting." That message, the power of the vote, is one that he returned to again and again, telling us about GOP efforts to suppress the vote, "That is how they win. That is how they get to keep making decisions that affect your life and the lives of the people you love. That’s how the economy will keep getting skewed to the wealthy and well-connected. How our health systems will let more people fall through the cracks. That’s how a democracy withers until it’s no democracy at all." And, goddamn, he knows that from the utter failure of Democrats to show up for the 2010 and 2014 midterms so that the warped and racist Tea Party narrative could have such power.

Look, I've been watching and writing about politics since Reagan. I have never seen a president tell us in such stark terms that we're hanging by a thread. And that it came from the man we used to call "No-Drama Obama"? That should punch all of us in the gut. Gird yer loins and vote for your life, for all our lives, motherfuckers. Shit's gonna get crazy.

Pelosi endorses Joe Kennedy in Massachusetts Senate race

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Thursday endorsed Massachussetts Rep. Joe Kennedy III in his bid to unseat the state's incumbent Sen. Ed Markey, giving Kennedy a crucial boost in a tight Democratic primary race.

Why it matters: Her move comes as many on the left have called for fresher, younger faces to represent party leadership. The 74-year-old Markey is backed by progressives, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), and co-authored the Green New Deal.

Pelosi’s endorsement was a surprise to many in Washington, given she served 25 years with Markey in the House and the two have long been supportive of each other.

What she's saying: "Never before have the times demanded we elect courageous leaders as today, and that is why I am proud to endorse Joe Kennedy for Senate," Pelosi said in a video announcing her endorsement.

"Joe Kennedy represents this party’s future. He will help lead Democrats forward on the defining battles of our time," Pelosi added in a news release from Kennedy's campaign, per the Boston Globe.

New Poll: Majority of Americans Are Embarrassed and “Very Angry” at the State of the Country

A majority of Americans feel embarrassment by the U.S. handling of the Coronavirus and most of them are very angry at the direction the country is heading.

Those are the findings of a new CNN poll released on Wednesday. In bad news for President Donald Trump, his approval rating on Coronavirus has hit a new record low.

Fifty-eight percent of Americans said they didn’t approve of Trump’s handling of the pandemic, while 55% said the worst of the Covid-19 outbreak is still to come.

CNN found that nearly 7 in 10 Americans are embarrassed by the country’s response to the Coronavirus, with a clear partisan divide on the issue. Some 93% of Democrats are embarrassed, though 61% Republicans are proud.
