'Younger, Sicker, Quicker'

‘Younger, Sicker, Quicker’
August 5, 2021 at 5:44 am EDT By Taegan Goddard

“Physicians working in Covid hot spots across the nation say that the patients in their hospitals are not like the patients they saw last year,” the New York Times reports.

“Almost always unvaccinated, the new arrivals tend to be younger, many in their 20s or 30s. And they seem sicker than younger patients were last year, deteriorating more rapidly.”

“Doctors have coined a new phrase to describe them: ‘younger, sicker, quicker.’
Many physicians treating them suspect that the Delta variant of the coronavirus, which now accounts for more than 80 percent of new infections nationwide, is playing a role.”

Republicans Demand Barack Obama Celebrate His 60th Birthday in Solitary Confinement

Levin Report
Republicans Demand Barack Obama Celebrate His 60th Birthday in Solitary Confinement
Apparently scaling back the party to just family and close friends, all of whom are vaccinated, isn’t good enough for the GOP.
By Bess Levin
August 4, 2021

When the news emerged this week that Barack Obama was throwing himself a giant 60th birthday party on Martha’s Vineyard with a guest list reportedly approaching 500, it didn’t look great. Was it as bad as Donald Trump holding numerous super-spreader events sans masks or social distancing, at a time when vaccines weren’t available? Obviously not. As bad as the elected officials seemingly doing everything in their power to cause people to get infected with COVID-19? Again, no. Obama, a responsible individual who believes in science, was holding the party outdoors, asking guests to be vaccinated, and not allowing anyone to enter the property without proof of a negative test, submitted to a COVID coordinator overseeing the health aspect of the whole thing.

Still, as cases surge throughout the country thanks to the significantly more contagious delta variant, the whole thing didn’t seem like the best idea. And even though he was reportedly, per The New York Times, “eager to carry on with his plans, displaying what some Democrats supportive of Mr. Obama said they viewed as a casual disregard for the optics,” ultimately, the 44th president chose to reverse course, announcing on Wednesday that he and Michelle had “decided to significantly scale back the event to include only family and close friends.” He did this despite the fact that the party was months in the making and despite the fact that some guests had apparently already arrived on the island ahead of the bash. Because reasonable people are flexible and okay with admitting they were wrong. If this had been a certain other president’s birthday, he would no doubt thrown a colossal hissy fit and screamed at aides, “Nobody cancels my birthday party! Nobody!”

So, Obama scaled his back to just family and friends, the same rules about everyone needing to be vaccinated and COVID-free will presumably still apply, the planned shindig did not occur and no one got hurt. No muss, no fuss. Right? Wrong! Instead, Republicans are, at this very moment, shitting multiple bricks over the fact that Obama is having any birthday party, period. If it‘s not just him and Michelle, it’s apparently too much for conservatives, and even then they’d prefer he celebrate by himself in the garage with a pack of Ring Dings.

Appearing on Fox News this morning, Senator John Kennedy—who said in October that COVID-19 was “not nearly as lethal as the experts told us it was going to be”—insisted it’s not enough for Obama to scale back the party—he must cancel it altogether and have “a beer and a personal-pan pizza at home with his wife.”

He also claimed, entirely seriously, that “The single biggest thing that has undermined our efforts to make the American people understand we are in a fourth wave is President Obama’s decision to hold a birthday bash.“ The single biggest! Not the conservatives spreading vaccine misinformation, or the Republican governors claiming everything is hunky-dory as their states become the worst place in the country for COVID-19, but Obama’s decision to hold a birthday party, to which he has since disinvited hundreds of people. Guy doesn’t deserve gifts or Facebook well-wishes. In fact, he’s on a birthday time-out until he stops and thinks about what he’s done.

Devin Nunes Is Suing Rachel Maddow For Being Mean

Devin Nunes Is Suing Rachel Maddow For Being Mean
Can't wait for the fact-check discovery on this one!
By Frances Langum

Whiny litigious baby Devin Nunes, Republican of California, is suing Rachel Maddow. Bloomberg reports what Devin Nunes is paying attorneys to say. Really.

"'MSNBC and Maddow harbor an institutional hostility, hatred, extreme bias, spite and ill-will towards plaintiff due to plaintiff’s emergence as the most prominent skeptic in Congress of Maddow’s marquee news narrative from 2017 to 2019: that the Trump campaign colluded with Russians to hack the 2016 presidential elections,' Nunes’ lawyers said in the complaint."

Wow, if this case goes anywhere (it won't), we can't wait for Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama to use Devin Nune's "precedent" to go after Fox hosts, personally, as well as the entire network.

Coward waited until Maddow was on vacation to announce the lawsuit. What a chicken.

Why the hell is he filing the lawsuit in Texas?

The anti-American right

The anti-American right

Rooting against Olympians, scoffing at Capitol police, broaching civil war — meet today’s conservative movement.
By Zack Beauchamp@zackbeauchampzack@vox.com Aug 3, 2021, 1:20pm EDT

The Olympics are typically a boom time for jingoism: patriotic fervor heightening among Americans of all stripes with each gold medal for Team USA. But this year, we’ve seen an unlikely faction of Americans rooting against our athletes: conservatives.

These attacks on Team USA are not just culture war red meat; they are a reflection of a rising tendency in the conservative movement to reject America itself. In this thinking, the country is so corrupted that it is no longer a source of pride or even worthy of respect. In its most radical versions, you even see cheerleading for revolution or civil war.

Conservative anti-Americanism still pays lip service to love of country: Its proponents declare themselves the true patriots, describing their enemies as the nation’s betrayers. But when the cadre of traitors includes everyone from election administrators to Olympians to the Capitol Police, it becomes clear that the only America they love is the one that exists in their heads. When they contemplate the actual United States — real America, if you will — they are filled with scorn.

“They see no role or place for themselves in America now,” says Paul Elliott Johnson, a communications professor at the University of Pittsburgh who studies conservative rhetoric.

What’s striking about this strain of anti-American thought is how pervasive it is. Naturally, you frequently hear versions of it from rank-and-file conservatives and the carnival barkers of the right-wing echo chamber — but it doesn’t stop with them. Its most refined and troubling versions come from the highbrow thinkers of the Trumpist right; leading conservative politicians put their stamps on it.

While not entirely new — this has been bubbling up for years now, especially since Trump’s rise — the recent flare-up amid the Olympics and the January 6 hearings only underscores that influential elements of the American right seem past beyond the point of no return. These conservatives do not believe in sharing America with those who disagree with them. Forced to confront the country’s political diversity in the Biden era, they are choosing to turn on America rather than accommodate themselves to its reality.

How Mainstream Dems Dispatched a Progressive Hero in Ohio

How Mainstream Dems Dispatched a Progressive Hero in Ohio
The belief that Bernie Sanders surrogate Nina Turner disrespected mainstream Democrats, including Black Democrats, set alarm bells ringing—and they went to work.

It’s rare that a special election in August carries as much weight as Tuesday’s race in Ohio pitting Nina Turner, a hero to progressives and a fierce promoter of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), Medicare for All, and the Green New Deal, against Shontel Brown, a local office holder with an undistinguished record but with the firepower of the Congressional Black Caucus behind her, along with the endorsement of Hillary Clinton and other national Democrats.

Turner entered the race as the frontrunner who, if she won, could affect the delicate balance among congressional Democrats and its two wings. She speaks her mind sometimes in offensive language and she readily turns her fury on Democrats who don’t embrace her wing of the party. A furious backlash sparked by the CBC put an end to Turner’s aspirations.

Brown won with 50.4 percent of the vote to Turner’s 44 percent. Turner’s potential win had sounded alarm bells for the Biden agenda and for the ability of the Democratic Party to maintain the unity needed to squeeze legislation out of a closely divided Congress. Mainstream Democrats anchored by the CBC went into action to thwart Turner and promote Brown, a member of the Cuyahoga County Council whose public service the Cleveland Plain Dealer described as “pleasant but undistinguished” in its endorsement of Turner.

The 11th District in Ohio is a safe Democratic seat, and Brown will fill the seat vacated by Marcia Fudge, who resigned to join the Biden Cabinet as housing secretary. The race laid bare the ideological differences within the party and within the Congressional Black Caucus, but Brown’s win should underscore for progressives that once again, when put to the test, the revolution is not yet here, the Midwest is not a Bernie stronghold, and Democrats not living on either coast tend to be more Biden traditionalists.

Turner stood by seeming to agree at a late June rally when the rapper Killer Mike said Clyburn was “stupid for not cutting a deal with Biden for his endorsement.” He mocked Clyburn for allegedly settling for Juneteenth as a federal holiday after delivering the presidency to Biden. Being called stupid by a rapper touting Turner is what drew Clyburn into the race. “I personally got involved… when I was invited by the Turner campaign,” Clyburn told The State newspaper in Columbia, South Carolina. “[They] talked about my stupidity for endorsing Joe Biden, and I just kind of decided if I’m going to be stupid, might as well be stupid.”

Hospitalized Vaccine Skeptic Says He's 'Over the Stupid Conspiracies,' Begs People to Have Shots

Hospitalized Vaccine Skeptic Says He’s ‘Over the Stupid Conspiracies,’ Begs People to Have Shots

An unvaccinated Virginia man who thought he was “invincible” is begging Americans to get their COVID-19 shots after he was hospitalized with the virus. Travis Campbell, 43, was admitted to a hospital over a week ago and has been posting videos from his ICU bed. His wife and two children have also fallen sick with the coronavirus. Campbell wrote in one post: “I have never been this sick in my life!! My whole family has COVID, I truly regret not getting the vaccine... I’m over the stupid conspiracies, it’s time to be rational and protective. It’s not worth being stubborn like I did.” His wife, Kellie Campbell, told NBC News: “We just thought we were invincible and we weren’t going to get it... He just doesn’t want anyone to have to endure the pain that he has, and if a vaccine will help them, that’s what they need to do.” Campbell posted a video from pulmonary ICU on Tuesday night, saying he fears that he will have to go on a ventilator, and that his mind has started to turn to plans for his own funeral.

Obama Cancels His Birthday Party

Obama Cancels His Birthday Party
August 4, 2021 at 5:35 am EDT By Taegan Goddard

“The party plans had been months in the making and many invitees had already arrived on Martha’s Vineyard when former President Barack Obama belatedly announced he was canceling his huge 60th birthday bash scheduled for Saturday,” the New York Times reports.

(edit to add, from link)

Said an Obama spokeswoman: “Due to the new spread of the Delta variant over the past week, the President and Mrs. Obama have decided to significantly scale back the event to include only family and close friends. He’s appreciative of others sending their birthday wishes from afar and looks forward to seeing people soon.”

With A Three-Pronged Plan, Trump Planned To Topple Democracy

With A Three-Pronged Plan, Trump Planned To Topple Democracy
From late December to the violent culmination of events on January 6, the Trump White House engaged in a multi-pronged effort to topple the United States government.
By Hunter

There is nothing that needs teasing out, here. The Trump White House plan was in full view. Donald Trump and his top allies engaged in a multi-pronged, extended, pre-plotted campaign to overthrow the next constitutionally appointed U.S. presidency by falsely claiming the election was invalid; by pressuring the Department of Justice to issue statements further casting doubt on the election's integrity; by calling key election officials and asking them to change reported vote totals on Trump's behalf; by using conspiratorial claims to gather a mob of enraged would-be "patriots" convinced that direct action was needed to "stop the steal" from happening; by asking that crowd to march the Capitol; by rebuffing efforts, during the mob's attack, to call off the now-violent mob.

It was an act of plain sedition, pre-planned and premeditated and orchestrated from inside Trump's own inner circle. It was backed by a majority of House Republicans, multiple of which were in communication with Trump and dozens of whom were allied with the effort to falsely dispute the election's results.

Donald Trump and his top aides engaged in a multipart plan to overthrow the United States government so as to retain power. Put that in your head and let it stew there, because there's simply no denying that it's true.

The new notes from the Department of Justice represent, by themselves, an act of official corruption easily besting Nixon's worst. Asking the Department of Justice to falsely cast doubts on the integrity of a U.S. election that booted you from power is by itself an act that would demand impeachment, if Senate Republicans were not themselves so corrupt as to have allied with the idea. Calling a Georgia election official to ask that official to "find" new votes is a demand that should yet land Trump in prison for a decade or longer. Pointedly ignoring lawmakers asking for assistance as his enraged allies broke through windows and sought out his enemies is the stuff of terrorism, not mere corruption.

It is the three-pronged plan that elevates Trump and his top Republican allies from merely corrupt to outright seditionists. It was a plan intended to erase a U.S. presidential election. It sought out allies in the Department of Justice who would publicly discredit the election, allies in state governments who would change the vote totals, and a public mob that would disrupt the vote count and intimidate public officials into approving a Trump return to power.

It was all one plan, not three. Discredit the election using false claims; use the same false claims to stoke a public anger deep enough to justify tossing out the rule of law, in the name of restoring "order."

It was an attempted fascist takeover, and many of its top orchestrators are still featured prominently on the Sunday news shows. Parts of it came very close to succeeding; had different Republican officials been in different offices, it seems quite possible now that Trump's White House could have found state or county allies willing to alter votes in the manner they were requested. Parts of it were seemingly asinine, inventions of deranged and desperate minds; one has a hard time believing that a congressional declaration that Trump was "somehow" still president would be treated as legitimate by the press, the military, or the public at large, if the declaration had come from lawmakers being literally held hostage by a mob demanding they do so.

It was still an attempt, though. Trump and others within the White House engaged in weeks of effort in attempts to enlist both accomplices within government and a paramilitary force outside it. Trump is a traitor to his country. Any outcome that does not see him rotting in prison for his acts will itself be an affront to our would-be democracy.

Activist Whose NGO Helped Olympian’s Husband Escape Belarus Found Dead in Kiev

An activist whose NGO just helped the husband of a Belarus Olympian who defected to Poland escape to Ukraine has been found hanged in a park in Kiev.

Vitaly Shishov, whose Belarus House in Ukraine has helped many dissidents who find themselves in the sights of autocratic leader Alexander Lukashenko get to safety, left Belarus in 2020 after feeling threatened after the widely disputed election results and vicious crackdown. Shishov had been warned by both Ukrainian officials and his allies in Belarus that the group was under surveillance and subject to “various provocations, including kidnapping and liquidation.” He had told friends that recently on his daily run, he had been approached by strangers and had noticed surveillance.

His death, which is being investigated by Ukrainian officials as either a murder or suicide, comes one day after sprinter Krystsina Tsimanouskaya accepted asylum from Poland after refusing to board a flight to Minsk after the Belarus Olympics team pulled her from competition because she complained about her coach on social media. Tsimanouskaya’s husband, Arseniy Zdanevich, also an athlete, immediately fled to Ukraine on Sunday with the help of Belarus House, according to media reports.
