Pelosi Urges Mueller to Testify Publicly to 'Restore Trust' in Handling of Report

Pelosi Urges Mueller to Testify Publicly to ‘Restore Trust’ in Handling of Report

Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer have urged Robert Mueller to testify in both the House and Senate to “restore public trust” in the handling of the Special Counsel investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election. The House Speaker and Senate Minority leader released an early morning statement hours before Attorney General William Barr is set to release a redacted version of the report. Democrats expressed outrage Wednesday over the report's planned release being held until after Barr holds a press conference Wednesday morning. “Attorney General Barr's regrettably partisan handling of the Mueller report, including his slanted March 24th summary letter, his irresponsible testimony before Congress last week, and his indefensible plan to spin the report in a press conference later this morning—hours before he allows the public or Congress to see it—have resulted in a crisis of confidence in his independence and impartiality,” wrote the leading Democrats. “We believe the only way to begin restoring public trust in the handling of the Special Counsel's investigation is for Special Counsel Mueller himself to provide public testimony in the House and Senate as soon as possible. The American people deserve to hear the truth.”

Buttigieg in Des Moines: 1,600 attend rally planned for 50 people

Democratic presidential hopeful Pete Buttigieg's Tuesday night town hall in Des Moines, Iowa, was so packed, it was standing room only — despite his expectations that only 50 people would turn up, the Quad City Times reports.

Details: More than 1,600 people turned out to hear the South Bend, Indiana, mayor speak at the rally inside the gymnasium of Franklin Junior High School. It's another sign interest in him is continuing to soar, despite being relatively unknown at a national level when he entered the race in January.

O'Rourke Stays Away from TV

O’Rourke Stays Away from TV
April 17, 2019 at 10:18 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard

Politico: “O’Rourke’s cable absenteeism diverges with the omnipresence of other 2020 candidates, particularly South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg, whose media saturation strategy corresponds with his recent rise in polls and surprise early fundraising successes.”

Said O’Rourke: “We have held more town halls in the month and four days that we’ve been doing this than I think any other candidate, because meeting you eyeball to eyeball, to me, is so much more satisfying than being on cable TV and in a soundbite.”

He added: “At some point, I may have to give in and be on your television set, but right now I want to be with you in person

Trump Tells Aides: 'Keep an Eye' on Fox News, Make Sure It Stays Loyal to Me

Trump Tells Aides: ‘Keep an Eye’ on Fox News, Make Sure It Stays Loyal to Me
Even before publicly freaking out about Bernie Sanders’ town hall, the president has long kept tabs on whether the network was going wobbly on him.

It was late March, and Donald Trump was preoccupied with the swirl of new investigations launched by House Democrats against him and his inner sanctum, and with the coming delivery of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s long-awaited report on Russian election meddling and Trump’s possible obstruction of justice.

In the midst of all this, there was another question weighing heavily on the president’s mind: Was Fox News, his favorite organ of conservative media and pro-Trump messaging, being sufficiently subservient to him?

“Keep an eye on it,” Trump started telling aides
, according to two people with direct knowledge of his directive, in conversations about what was going on behind-the-scenes at Fox, and if there was any cause for concern for even the slightest positive coverage of any Democrat.

To any casual observer of Fox News or the Fox Business Network, this might seem like a hilariously irrational fear. The networks’ ratings-driving primetime lineups are jam-packed with vociferous Trump defenders, and some of Fox’s biggest names—such as Pete Hegseth, Sean Hannity, Lou Dobbs, Rupert Murdoch, to name just a few—have long served as sounding boards, phone-a-friends, and informal advisors to the president.

But privately, President Trump had been raising these questions of institutional loyalty, on-and-off, since at least the middle of last year. Several people who’ve heard him do this view it as more of a gutcheck than a loss of faith, and as yet another indication that Trump can interpret even the smallest deviations as a slight or a betrayal.

Today Is a Bad Day for Trump

Today Is a Bad Day for Trump
April 18, 2019 at 6:42 am EDT By Taegan Goddard

Playbook: “Why? Because we’re about to get a ton of new information about the president and how he conducts business. There will be tons new here, no matter how much is redacted. The president has the ability to plow through precarious situations by talking about what he wants to talk about, and his base sticks with him. Trump will be at Mar-a-Lago by this evening.”

“But remember: This is just the beginning of a long, protracted legal and political process. Dems will fight for fewer redactions, and seem certain to call Mueller and Barr to the Hill to testify.”

Canada joins new German-France 'alliance' that doesn't include U.S.

How intolerable for all of us.

I remember Chrystia Freeland as a very intelligent, personable woman/Canadian who appeared on cable news.

OTTAWA — Canada has formally joined a German-French coalition aimed at saving the international world order from destruction by various world dictators and autocrats — and U.S. President Donald Trump.

The initiative is part of ongoing government efforts to shore up international co-operation at a time of waning American leadership and Trump's outspoken disdain of institutions created after the Second World War, including the G7, the World Trade Organization and the United Nations.

Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland offered Canada's support for the Alliance for Multilateralism during a meeting of G7 foreign ministers in Dinard, France earlier this month.

Japan also joined the new alliance during the meeting, and Freeland marked the moment on Twitter posting a photo of herself with Jean-Yves Le Drian, Heiko Mass and Taro Kono, her French, German and Japanese counterparts.

"Many of today's greatest challenges are global and they can only be solved when we work together. That is why Canada stands united with its German, French, and Japanese friends," Freeland said in the photo's caption.

Trump abruptly blocks U.S. from appointing anyone to UN committee on racism

Trump abruptly blocks U.S. from appointing anyone to UN committee on racism
After refusing to renominate human rights lawyer Gay McDougall, administration will send no one at all

The Trump administration will not nominate anyone from the United States to serve on the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

A State Department official told Politico that the White House intervened to stop the expected renomination of a human rights lawyer selected by Barack Obama to the 18-member UN panel. As a result, the U.S. will not nominate anyone to the committee.

Gay McDougall, who has served on the committee since 2015, was informed by State Department officials that she would be renominated before the White House abruptly scrapped the plan without providing an explanation, according to the report.

The committee meets three times per year in Geneva to review progress toward the implementation of a 1960s global pact on “the elimination of all forms of racial discrimination.”

McDougall, a human rights expert, told the outlet she intended to finish out her four-year term, which ends this fall.

“I regret that I’m not able to continue, and that was not of my choosing,” she said.

McDougall previously criticized Trump for emboldening racists in the United States around the world.

“Essentially, Trump’s many tweets and dismissive comments have given a green light to bigots around the country to attack their neighbors,” she said in 2016. “All of us who campaign for human rights have been shocked and angered by Trump’s derogatory messages regarding Muslims, Hispanics, women and people with disabilities. It is clear that his rhetoric has led directly to an increase in hate crimes in the US. Now is the time for all those who believe in human rights to stand firm and fight for basic decency.”

McConnell launches 2020 Senate reelection bid with hidden jab at Democrats

Payback, mofo. I don't think Kentucky likes him.

McConnell launches 2020 Senate reelection bid with hidden jab at Democrats
Apr 17, 2019 Updated 3 hrs ago

The 77-year-old is running for a seventh term in the U.S. Senate. The Kentucky Republican launched his campaign on social media on Wednesday with a video that lists his accomplishments. The focus of much of the three-minute video is McConnell's push for conservatives on the U.S. Supreme Court.

But what has many talking about the TeamMitch.com website is a jab at Democrats hidden in the form of an error message. When supporters go to a specific url, they get a blue image of President Obama and Vice President Joe Biden with then Supreme Court nominee Merrick Garland. A message on the photo reads, "Oops This Page Doesn't Exist, but just in case, go donate and make sure it doesn't come back. Donate. Or you can head back home."

A Brand New Initiative Has Been Launched To Fire Mitch McConnell

A Brand New Initiative Has Been Launched To Fire Mitch McConnell

Let America Vote has launched a new campaign targeted four GOP Senate seats that if flipped would fire Mitch McConnell as Majority Leader.

According to a Let America Vote statement provided to PoliticusUSA:

The project will start by focusing on four 2020 U.S. Senate races held by incumbents who support McConnell: Colorado (Senator Cory Gardner), North Carolina (Senator Thom Tillis), Arizona (Senator Martha McSally) and Iowa (Senator Joni Ernst). Let America Vote will fundraise into accounts that will go to whoever wins the Democratic primary in each state, hold events to mobilize voters, recruit volunteers to knock on doors, make phone calls and send texts for the challengers, and run digital advertisements.

Later this spring, Let America Vote will add Kentucky to the list of targets to help stop McConnell from coming back to Washington at all. We will also be watching Senate races in Georgia, Maine and Texas, among others, throughout the cycle to determine additional races to add to the project.

McConnell has been the biggest enemy of voting rights in Congress. He is also the biggest proponent of Citizens United. There are a lot of reasons to get rid of Majority Leader McConnell. His protection of Trump, shady dealings with Russia, theft of a Supreme Court seat, and obstruction are four of the biggest, but the Senator from Kentucky is also a champion of making it more difficult for the American people to vote.

Republicans are going to be fighting battles on multiple fronts in 2020, but unless Democrats want a return to the years of holding the White House and having obstructionist Mitch block everything in the Senate, they must not only take back the White House but send Mitch McConnell packing.

One of the best ways to protect voting rights is to make Chuck Schumer majority leader and strip Mitch McConnell of his power.

Scientists: We kept pig brains alive 10 hours after death. Bioethicists: “Holy shit.”
Scientists hooked up 32 dead pig brains to a machine to revive them. And it worked.
By Brian Resnick@B_resnickbrian@vox.com Apr 17, 2019, 1:00pm EDT

Around 15 minutes after a mammal’s brain is cut off from oxygen, the organ is supposed to die.

Without life-giving oxygen, the cells of the brain quickly starve. Some of the cells burst open, while the chemistry of others becomes so imbalanced that their membranes break down. This frenzied spiral ends one way: in death.

It’s thought that this process is widespread across brain anatomy and irreversible. After brain cells die, they are thought to be impossible to revive.

But a stunning new finding published Wednesday in the journal Nature turns that conventional wisdom around.

In a paper that reads a bit like an adaptation of Mary Shelley, researchers at Yale University describe how they were able to partially revive disembodied pigs’ brains several hours after the pigs’ death.
