How did Mary Engelbreit get so woke? St. Louis artist known for cute drawings isn't holding back

“Now I’m focused on how many senators are willing to sell their souls to cover up for this moron,” she says during a recent visit. If there’s any doubt about who she’s referring to, a scroll through her Instagram feed makes the subject of her ire crystal clear.

This is WAY more than Democrat/Republican,” she wrote in response to a follower upset by one of her recent posts. “This is moral/immoral. You can be a Republican and not support Trump. But if you do support him, you are supporting a white supremacist, uneducated, lying, grifting, racist, narcissistic, evil sexual predator, and all of your ‘Can’t we all just love one another?' is meaningless and insulting to all the people Trump seeks to disenfranchise.”

Kushner says Trump critics like Bolton 'didn't have what it took'

Washington (CNN)President Donald Trump's senior adviser Jared Kushner told CNN's Fareed Zakaria that impeachment has not hurt the President's support, insisting that his base "is strong and getting stronger" and that former White House officials who have raised concerns about Trump "didn't have what it took."
In a wide-ranging interview on Fareed Zakaria GPS that focuses on the President's new plan to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Kushner told Zakaria that people outside Washington aren't paying attention to the impeachment drama unfolding in Washington, only the third time in US history that a sitting president has been put on trial.

"I think there's just a big difference between what the voters see and what the voters want and from what people maybe in Washington or in the media are calling for," Kushner said. "What we've seen since impeachment started is that most people, by the way, are not paying attention to it.
"

The President's son-in-law pointed to recent poll numbers to bolster his point. "We've seen the President's numbers go up by 7 points," Kushner said. "We got polling numbers back last night that shows the President's approval rating nationally is over 50%. It was the highest that it's been since right after the inauguration."

Kushner went on to suggest that Bolton and other senior former officials, including former Defense Secretary James Mattis and former White House chief of staff John Kelly, didn't have the chops to perform their jobs to the level needed.

Asked why so many senior officials have left feeling that Trump has done "a lot of wrong things," Kushner told Zakaria that, "What I have seen is that the cream has risen and -- I'm not going to say what the word is -- but that has sank."

Kushner went on to say that Trump has "cycled out a lot of the people who didn't have what it took to be successful here and a lot of the people who have come in and been excellent are not out there complaining and writing books because they're too busy working."

"HELP!!!" Internal #SharpieGate Emails Show Government Officials Freaked Out...

“HELP!!!” Internal #SharpieGate Emails Show Government Officials Freaked Out Over Trump’s “Doctored” Hurricane Map
“HELP!!!” wrote one federal official. “Yep, crazy,” said another.
Posted on February 1, 2020, at 12:47 p.m. ET

President Trump’s fake hurricane map triggered panic, outrage, and an internal revolt among top officials at the National Weather Service and NOAA. That’s according to a trove of more than 1,000 emails released Friday night to BuzzFeed News and other publications in response to a Freedom of Information Act request.

Trump (falsely) tweeted on September 1 that several southern states, including Alabama, were “most likely to be hit” by the hurricane after its deadly pass through the Bahamas. Three days later, Trump shared a fake map in which a storm track, seemingly drawn with a black Sharpie, showed Dorian moving toward Alabama. When a National Weather Service forecaster tried to set the record straight, its parent agency, NOAA, released an unsigned statement disavowing the correction — seemingly to appease the White House.

Trump’s fake map and the administration’s insistence on defending it despite evidence to the contrary — dubbed #SharpieGate on Twitter — shows how the administration has prioritized politics over science, even during a fast-moving, life-threatening situation.

Officials and scientists, both inside and outside the government, were horrified, the newly released emails show.

“For an agency founded upon and recognized for determining scientific truths, trusted by the public, and responsible in law to put forward important science information, I find it unconscionable that an anonymous voice inside of NOAA would be found to castigate a dutiful, correct, and loyal NWS Forecaster who spoke the truth,” Craig McLean, then the agency’s assistant administrator, wrote in a September 7 email to other top-level government officials.

“What concerns me most is that this Administration is eroding the public trust in NOAA for an apparent political recovery from an ill timed and imprecise comment from the President.”

The Trump wrecking ball just keeps swinging

Oh look, even as he’s being impeached for cheating in his upcoming election campaign, Trump’s minions are hard at work destroying health care:

The Trump administration is back with a new initiative that could make it harder for some low-income Americans to get health care.

Officials on Thursday told states that they can request major changes in the operation and funding of their Medicaid programs. Under the new arrangement, the outlines of which were first reported by Politico over the weekend, states would have more leeway to modify benefits and eligibility standards for some parts of the population.

In return, states would have to accept a more limited commitment of funds from the federal government.

In other words, if a state agrees to take less money they will have the right to punish their own citizens more freely. You’d think no state would want to do that. But, of course, many of them are run by Republicans so yes, they will likely be thrilled at the prospect of denying health care to people. Ever since Medicare was first enacted they’ve been hysterical on the subject.

This new financing option is a variation on what’s known as a “block grant,” which would end the federal government’s open-ended promise to finance Medicaid coverage for whoever needs it, however much it costs. Republicans have historically promoted block grants as a way to limit or reduce Medicaid spending, and many experts believe such proposals would lead to cuts in enrollment or benefits that would harm beneficiaries.

That potential has stirred up opposition and helps explain why Medicaid block grants have never gotten the support they needed to get through Congress.

With this new initiative, the Trump administration is trying to get around that political problem by using its executive authority to let states change Medicaid financing on their own. It’s the same approach that the administration has used to limit or scale back other politically sensitive programs, like food assistance, that serve low-income Americans.

Oh, and here’s another one:

The Trump administration on Thursday moved to drop the threat of punishment to oil and gas companies, construction crews and other organizations that kill birds “incidentally,” arguing that businesses that accidentally kill birds ought to be able to operate without fear of prosecution.

Conservation groups said the proposed new regulation from the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, which operates under the Department of Interior, would substantially weaken the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918 and put millions of birds in danger. The threat of fines and prosecution has, for decades, helped prod industries to take steps to protect birds, like affixing red lights on communication towers, they say.

This is the same president who claims to be against wind power because it kills birds.

They are working overtime now to destroy as much government protection for humans and animals as they possibly can. And it’s picking up speed.

Rudy Giuliani Admits That Bolton Meeting That Trump Denies Happened

Rudy Giuliani Admits That Bolton Meeting That Trump Denies Happened

Rudy Giuliani is admitting that the meeting with John Bolton that Trump claims never happened actually did happen.

The New York Times reported:

Mr. Bolton left the Oval Office after 10 minutes and returned to his office, he wrote. Shortly after, two aides came into his office, saying Mr. Trump had sent them out of a separate meeting on trade to ask about Mr. Kent, Mr. Bolton wrote.

Asked about Mr. Bolton’s account, Mr. Giuliani said, “I think he’s making some of it up. He’s sure making up — I wouldn’t call it making it up, but he’s acting like a real scumbag by never telling me that he objected once, and then saying I was a time bomb, or a firecracker or something.”

Rudy Giuliani confirms that the meeting where Trump directed Bolton to withhold Ukraine aid happened, but he is mad that Bolton didn’t complain to him directly.

Trump is guilty. The evidence continues to pile up against Trump on a daily basis.
Trump’s impeachment doesn’t go away after the Senate votes on the articles of impeachment on Wednesday. Trump is still impeached. He will still be impeached during the 2020 election, and he will carry impeachment with him for the rest of his life.

'Two very interesting teams': Donald Trump doesn't know who's playing in the Super Bowl

'Two very interesting teams': Donald Trump doesn't know who's playing in the Super Bowl

Donald Trump, relatable man of the people, beloved of diner customers throughout The Heartland, does not know who is playing in the Super Bowl. And despite his vast experience in pretending he’s an expert on things he knows nothing about, he can’t even hide it.

Asked about his preference in the game, Trump said, “Well, I love them both, let's just say. But I will tell you, some two very interesting teams and interesting players, some really great players. And it's going to be hopefully a great Super Bowl.”

No, this doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things. Senate Republicans are letting the man off the hook for trying to obtain foreign interference to win an election. His administration is taking food assistance away from people who need it to survive, relaxing restrictions on the use of landmines, accelerating climate change, and so much more. He personally is emboldening white supremacists and rapists everywhere. He embraces authoritarian leaders around the globe.

So his ignorance about who’s in the Super Bowl and his clumsy attempt to hide it is barely even a footnote on the hour in which it became obvious. But it’s also another potent reminder that truly we live in the stupidest time, that this level of ignorance not just about policy but about the basics of U.S. culture can somehow be set aside in the portrayal of Trump as someone whose appeal comes from anything but the vicious bigoted impulses he stokes. No one really thinks he’s likable or just like them or that he knows what their lives are like. His supporters are fervently in love with him, and there’s no possible explanation but the racism and nationalism and misogyny and bullying and, possibly, to a small extent, envy over his crass deployment of the wealth he pretends he didn’t just inherit. That is what it is, and what it is is sickening, but what’s truly gross is the media’s willingness to pretend that his appeal is anything else.

Three Branches of Government Conspired to Rig Donald Trump’s Impeachment Trial

For those of us who clung to the norms and the forms of neutral legal process over the past three years, it’s sobering to see something that was dressed up as a trial, with rules and robes and speeches, wither and die on the vine, all for a lack of moral courage from an array of individual actors who will just claim someday that they were merely playing their constitutionally designated parts. Nobody expected more from any one of them, but that doesn’t make the damage any less severe. It might have taken just a small act of courage from the chief justice, or Murkowski, or Alexander, or Bolton, to give the country an actual trial. But courage in the face of the juggernaut of bothsidesism is trickier than it looks, because it will be characterized as bias. Three branches of government worked together to obscure, delay, and confound a fair trial. Nothing about this process was neutral.

A friend of mine who is as devoted to the proposition that the courts, the lawyers, and the judges will save America from itself warned me very early on in the Trump era to read all the transcripts from the third Nuremburg trial, commonly known as the Justice Case. That was the trial for judges, jurists, and prosecutors who—under cover of law—allowed for atrocities during the Third Reich. I don’t read and reread the transcripts and testimony obsessively because we find ourselves in anything close to the Third Reich, or because judges in 21st century America are accused of doing anything close to what the Nuremburg jurists were accused and largely convicted of. I read and reread the transcripts and conclusions merely to remind myself that just because judges, robes, statutes, and case law are involved in a process does not mean that justice is being done. I also do it to remind myself that sometimes people who live in thrall to the idea that whatever courts and process ultimately produce is an objective thing called “justice” are sometimes too credulous by half—and oftentimes even complicit.

This Senate trial was not a failure of process, but a failure of courage. Historians will laugh at a truth-seeking that elided and avoided truth. But it won’t fault Auden’s “neutral air” or “blind skyscrapers”; it will fault the architects of a trial that never even tried.

Bernie Sanders Leads Trump, All 2020 Candidates in Donations From Active-Duty Troops

Bernie Sanders Leads Trump, All 2020 Candidates in Donations From Active-Duty Troops
The Vermont senator outpaces Trump in military fundraising and has doubled his nearest Democratic rival
By Seth Harp

No other 2020 candidate for president, including Donald Trump, can come close to matching Bernie Sanders’ level of support among members of the U.S. military, to go by the most recent campaign finance data from the Federal Election Commission.

Soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines have donated a total of $185,625 to Sen. Sanders’ 2020 campaign. By comparison, they have given $113,012 to Trump, $80,250 to Pete Buttigieg, $64,604 to Sen. Elizabeth Warren, and a relatively paltry $33,045 to former Vice President Joe Biden, according to Doug Weber, a senior researcher at the Center for Responsive Politics.

For every candidate in the 2020 race, the CRP maintains a list of the 20 companies or institutions whose employees have given the most money to his or her campaign. Remarkably, the U.S. Army, the U.S. Navy, the U.S. Air Force, the Department of Defense, and the Department of Veterans Affairs all separately appear on Sanders’ list, comprising 5 of his top 20. The largest service branch, the U.S. Army, comes in at number 11, with $65,395 in total donations. That’s just behind Walmart, whose employees gave $69,523.

Sanders’ support from employees of Walmart, Amazon, Microsoft, and the U.S. Postal Service has been reported, but the strength of his appeal to the armed forces has gone largely unnoticed.
