The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Wednesday extended its ban on passenger cruising from U.S. ports through Oct. 31.
CDC Director Dr. Robert Redfield pushed to extend the order until February 2021, according to Axios, which cited two people familiar with the matter.
Axios reported that Vice President Mike Pence overruled Redfield and that the plan is to extend the ban until Oct. 31.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Wednesday extended its ban on passenger cruising from U.S. ports through Oct. 31 after the White House reportedly overruled calls for a further suspension.

The CDC originally issued a no-sail order for cruise ships in U.S. waters on March 14 after hundreds of coronavirus infections and several Covid-19 deaths were reported onboard ships with outbreaks across the world. The CDC previously said “that cruise ship travel exacerbates the global spread of Covid-19” in justifying the order.

Between March 1 and Sep. 29, at least 3,689 probable cases of Covid-19 were reported on cruise ships in U.S. waters, the CDC said in a statement late Wednesday, adding that at least 41 Covid-19 deaths have occurred on cruise ships. The agency added that “these numbers are likely incomplete and an underestimate.”

More than 50 GOP former national security officials endorse Biden

More than 50 GOP former national security officials endorse Biden
By J. Edward Moreno - 10/01/20 09:04 AM EDT

More than 50 additional former GOP national security officials have officially endorsed Democratic nominee Joe Biden for president.

The group, called Former Republican National Security Officials for Biden, first endorsed Biden in August with 70 members backing the Democrat. On Wednesday an additional 56 people joined the group, bringing their total membership to about 130 individuals.

Those officials join several other GOP groups and political figures who have thrown their support behind Biden. Separately, a bipartisan group of 489 former national security officials also endorsed Biden last week.

The new group of former officials throwing their support for Biden reportedly include: Greg Brower, a former FBI assistant director; Larry Pfeiffer, a former CIA chief of staff; and Alden Munson, former deputy director of national intelligence.

The group, Former Republican National Security Officials for Biden, is reportedly launching ads in several key swing states, such as Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Florida, Arizona, North Carolina and Texas.

Elizabeth Neumann, Trump’s former assistant secretary for threat prevention in the Department of Homeland Security, told Reuters that many officials finalized their endorsement for Biden after President Trump refused to denounce white supremacy at the presidential debate Tuesday night.

“He has an inability to clearly condemn white supremacists,” Neumann told the wire service. “He either likes the ambiguity or he’s intentionally endorsing these people. He’s unfit, and I think he’s extremely dangerous.”

Trump to Hold Large Rallies In Wisconsin as Virus Surges
October 1, 2020 at 8:31 am EDT By Taegan Goddard

“President Trump will hold more large-scale campaign rallies in Wisconsin this weekend as coronavirus cases and hospitalization rage across the battleground state, making the clear decision to prioritize campaigning rather than worry about more people getting sick,” ABC News reports.

“Wisconsin, which is a must-win state in the president’s path to victory, is in the midst of an alarming surge of coronavirus cases just a month before the election — an unprecedented political curveball that could alter Wisconsin voters’ opinions on who they trust to handle the pandemic, as more are personally impacted by the virus.”

In the days after 17-year-old Kyle Rittenhouse was charged with fatally shooting two protesters in Kenosha, Wisconsin, the Trump administration reportedly instructed federal law-enforcement officials to be sympathetic toward the alleged shooter when talking publicly about the case. NBC News reports that it obtained internal Department of Homeland Security talking points that prepared officials for questions from the media. The document reportedly told officials to note that Rittenhouse “took his rifle to the scene of the rioting to help defend small business owners,” and that he was “chased and attacked by rioters before allegedly shooting three of them.” The DHS refused to comment on the leak. The talking points echo President Donald Trump’s comments on Rittenhouse, who noted the teen was “trying to get away” from protesters before shots were fired.

The Debate: Trump Give Us Filth and Fraud While Biden Actually Plans a Future for Us

snip//

When it comes to last night, no one is going to remember that Democratic candidate and former Vice President Joe Biden actually laid out plans for his presidency when he could get in more than a few words without being interrupted. Biden said what he'd do to get the nation through the pandemic and what he'd do to help businesses and schools reopen safely after we've finally gotten on the path to recovery. He said he'd get rid of Trump's tax cut for the wealthy. Biden talked about infrastructure spending and creating more jobs while moving the country to greener energy (and how that would create jobs, which is so obvious that it's maddening that this has to be explained). Biden talked about immediate steps he could take to mitigate the Godzilla of climate change that's going to wreck us. Biden talked about addressing racism and white privilege and police brutality.

Biden was the only one of the two candidates to actually utter the word "future," as if he could see beyond his immediate animal needs, unlike President and business failure Donald Trump.

Trump didn't offer a single idea for his second term. Not one. He said he'll have plans in the indeterminate future, but he didn't tell you one thing that he aspires to do for the country because his only aspiration is to stay in power.

But we won't remember any of this because, as is his way, Trump was a fucking tsunami of lies and accusations and conspiracy theories. And he just wouldn't stop. It was like going to an orgy and there's one guy who has done too much cocaine after downing Viagra and he just runs around with his half-hard microdick, frantically fucking any available hole but never able to cum because even the dog is rejecting his desperate humping. Christ, will someone throw this asshole out so the rest of us can enjoy the evening?

You've heard plenty about Trump refusing to condemn white supremacists. But what's being missed is that moderating wet noodle Chris Wallace actually fed him the line he should have said. Wallace asked Trump, "Are you willing tonight to condemn white supremacists and militia group and to say that they need to stand down and not add to the violence in a number of these cities?" And Trump couldn't even bring himself to say that about the neo-Nazi Proud Boys, instead saying the now-infamous "Proud Boys, stand back and stand by" before immediately pivoting to attacking left-wing protesters. It was appalling but of a piece with who Trump is and who supports Trump. The Proud Boys themselves were thrilled.

Trump says Proud Boys should 'stand down' after backlash to debate comments

Uh huh.

Trump says Proud Boys should 'stand down' after backlash to debate comments
By Brett Samuels - 09/30/20 03:05 PM EDT

President Trump on Wednesday said he didn't know about the Proud Boys
but that the group should "stand down" amid intense criticism of his remarks at the previous night's presidential debate that the far-right group should "stand back and stand by."

Trump on Wednesday faced blowback from a number of Republicans who said he should have forcefully denounced white supremacy when he was given the chance.

"I don't know who the Proud Boys are," Trump told reporters when departing for a campaign trip to Minnesota. "I can only say they have to stand down. Let law enforcement do their work."

Trump, however, again tried to equivocate on the matter, saying "the problem is on the left" while railing against antifa, a loosely affiliated collection of left-wing protesters.

Pressed on whether he would denounce white supremacists, including those who support him, Trump tried to shift the conversation to his support for law enforcement before claiming he has "always denounced any form of that."

As States Prepared Mail-in Ballots, Postal Service Failed to Update at Least 1.8 Million Addresses

Exclusive: As States Prepared Mail-in Ballots, Postal Service Failed to Update at Least 1.8 Million Addresses
By Eric Lichtblau
September 28, 2020 6:00 AM EDT

For three weeks in August, as election officials across the country were preparing to send out mail-in ballots to tens of millions of voters, the U.S. Postal Service stopped fully updating a national change of address system that most states use to keep their voter rolls current, according to multiple officials who use the system. A USPS spokesperson acknowledged the failure in response to questions from TIME, and said that at least 1.8 million new changes of address had not been registered in the database.

It is not clear to what extent the failure, which has not been previously reported, could compromise Americans’ ability to vote in this fall’s election. In normal times, hundreds of thousands of people move every week, and those numbers have increased during the COVID pandemic, which has forced millions of people, particularly young adults, to relocate at higher rates than usual, according to public polling and news reports. As of early June, some 3% of adults had moved and 6% had someone move in with them because of the pandemic, according to a Pew survey. That, and concern about the health risks of voting in person, experts from both parties say, will mean an unprecedented reliance on mail-in voting this year.

Several states contacted by TIME were unaware of the change-of-address problem. Officials in Minnesota, for one, sent out their ballot applications by mail earlier in September based partly on information drawn from the faulty database in August, the state’s election officials say. Other states had to delay sending out their ballots as they scrambled to fix incorrect addresses. At least 43 states plus the District of Columbia use the USPS change of address database. Many, like Minnesota, face close presidential contests, including Florida, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.

The postal service says it fixed the change-of-address issue and restored the missing data on Sept. 14. The USPS spokesperson, Martha Johnson, said the problem did not impact mail carriers’ ability to forward “eligible” mail to a new address. Many states ban the forwarding of election ballots from an old address, however, and the Postal Service did not respond to requests for clarification on the failure’s potential impact on the election. Internal USPS emails shared with TIME describe the source of the problem only as an unexplained “error”.
