Why you should brake for possums

The Virginia opossum is not the brightest of animals. When they are threatened, they pretend to be dead, which is where we get the expression "playing possum." Sometimes, they do this in response to threats from oncoming traffic, which results in possums becoming roadkill.

The next time you see a possum playing dead on the road, try your best to avoid hitting it. Because it turns out that possums are allies in the fight against Lyme disease.

Possums, like many other small and medium sized mammals, are hosts for ticks looking for a blood meal. But possums are remarkably efficient at eliminating foraging ticks.

"In a way, opossums are the unsung heroes in the Lyme Disease epidemic."

Rick Ostfeld, author of a book on Lyme disease ecology and a senior scientist at the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies, explains...

"Because many ticks try to feed on opossums and few of them survive the experience. Opossums are extraordinarily good groomers it turns out – we never would have thought that ahead of time – but they kill the vast majority – more than 95% percent of the ticks that try to feed on them. So these opossums are walking around the forest floor, hoovering up ticks right and left, killing over 90% of these things, and so they are really protecting our health."

So it's in our best interest to have possum neighbors. This means keeping their habitat intact with thoughtful land use planning, tolerating them in our yards, and, whenever possible, avoiding possum collisions."

I used to think they look ugly. Not any more...

Not since I saved one in my back woods a few of months ago - now I adore them. People must think they look too much like big rats but please don't hold that against them.

Is not that informed if he/she doesn't think g.w. will be a problem for them.

Arctic tundra is already affected by warming. It's thawing and releasing methane gas, the most dangerous of all carbon gases contributing to g.w., a phenomena which is increasing exponentially.

Unless this person expects to die in their early 60s, they will see their life greatly affected.
Isn't their "generation's problem"? Ha!

Twice...

Once at the ER in the middle of the night, was in full-blown anaphylactic shock. Hubby took me. My whole body was hideously swollen to the point folks gasped when they saw me. Staff put me at the front of the line to be seen. Had to spent the night getting meds IV'd into me. Long story.

2nd time, I was in labor.

But these don't count, right?!

I've worn about everything in my long life...

..depending on my weight and age but I'd never wear a MAGA hat. Otherwise, I'm a daredevil.

And at age 72, I own a pair of black leather pants that I actually wear! No kidding. Kids, I don't look my age, so I can get away with it. Really helped that I lost a lot of weight a few yrs ago.

Exactly! They are not going thru life feeling like frauds, with all the accompanying mental disorders as Trump has.

Btw, my first example, about an excellent researcher being unable to get grant money because his PhD was from a southern state university, was my hubby. Hubby told our son of his plight and made sure he applied to some "elite" grad schools. He did and was admitted into two where his graduate assistantship paid the expensive tuition. (Btw, his SAT math score hit 800!) So far, our son has gotten every job he's applied for and on the spot too. It's the damn system: award the elite school grads.

I could tell you a longer decades-old story about my hubs taking some of his research up to a Havard researcher, in order to get his support, only to be told: "If we can't do this here at Harvard, what makes you think you can with your degree from ________ of _________ (southern state school)?' "
True story, I swear!
And so it goes.

Btw, hubs has a few gov't owned patents on that very research. Since he worked for the gov't, he, unfortunately for us, has seen very little monetary reward from those patents.

My 33yo son on the subway fr Manhattan

Back to his apartment in Brooklyn. We were texting about our crazy dog when he suddenly changed the subject:

"There's a homeless person on the train next to me, and the woman across from me is giving him dirty looks. I want to chew her out. I'm going to make it a point to give him some money while she's looking. They're not bad people.they usually have a mental health issue they can't afford to treat that precludes work. I feel awful for homeless people....
Want to be disgusted? Be disgusted that our country makes it impossible for the lower class to get meds for schizophrenia...
When bezos could buy a third world country by himself. He could personally pull every homeless person in NYC out of the streets...
