Dow is on track for its worst quarterly performance since 1987 -- here's how the stock market tends t

The S&P 500 hasn’t been down in these three successive months since 2008

In a word, historic, but returns are almost certain to improve over the longer term despite the current pain, if history is any guide.

Indeed, it has been punishing for investors, as the market went into a coronavirus-sparked free fall that so far has the 124-year-old Dow Jones Industrial Average on pace to register its worst quarterly loss since the fourth quarter of 1987. The three-month skid also would represent the steepest first-quarter drop, from January through the end of March, in the index’s history, according to Dow Jones Market Data.

The dizzying equity meltdown has amounted to a more than 21% quarterly skid thus far for the Dow industrials DJIA, -1.412%, while the S&P 500 SPX, -1.382% has declined more than 18% over the quarter, which would mark the broad-market index’s sharpest such decline since the 2008 financial crisis.

Check out the table below, as of late morning on Tuesday:

INDEX QUARTERLY % CHANGE BEST/WORST SINCE
Dow -21.5% Q4 1987
S&P 500 -18.4% Q4 2008
Nasdaq Composite Index -12.6% Q4 2018

"Then they wrote it all down as the progress of man"

AUSTIN CITY LIMITS
S44 E4402: John Prine
0:54:11 | Expires: 5/17/2020 | Episode
Savor an hour-long set with songwriting legend John Prine. The veteran musician performs songs from his critically acclaimed recent album The Tree of Forgiveness, as well as gems from his catalogue.

https://www.pbssocal.org/programs/austin-city-limits/john-prine-8tbu28/

(last song of the set)

When I was a child my family would travel
Down to Western Kentucky where my parents were born
And there's a backwards old town that's often remembered
So many times that my memories are worn

And daddy won't you take me back to Muhlenberg County
Down by the Green River where Paradise lay
Well, I'm sorry my son, but you're too late in asking
Mister Peabody's coal train has hauled it away

Well, sometimes we'd travel right down the Green River
To the abandoned old prison down by Airdrie Hill
Where the air smelled like snakes and we'd shoot with our pistols
But empty pop bottles was all we would kill

And daddy won't you take me back to Muhlenberg County
Down by the Green River where Paradise lay
Well, I'm sorry my son, but you're too late in asking
Mister Peabody's coal train has hauled it away

Then the coal company came with the world's largest shovel
And they tortured the timber and stripped all the land
Well, they dug for their coal till the land was forsaken
Then they wrote it all down as the progress of man

And daddy won't you take me back to Muhlenberg County
Down by the Green River where Paradise lay
Well, I'm sorry my son, but you're too late in asking
Mister Peabody's coal train has hauled it away

When I die let my ashes float down the Green River
Let my soul roll on up to the Rochester dam
I'll be halfway to Heaven with Paradise waitin'
Just five miles away from wherever I am

And daddy won't you take me back to Muhlenberg County
Down by the Green River where Paradise lay
Well, I'm sorry my son, but you're too late in asking
Mister Peabody's coal train has hauled it away

Death rate comparison- H1N1 vs Covid-19

https://twitter.com/burgwx/status/1244432375825797122

If anyone's still wondering why we weren't this concerned with the H1N1 pandemic, here's a comparison of confirmed (laboratory tested & presumed positive) deaths in the US between the H1N1 pandemic & COVID-19:

Pretty stark as to now important physical distancing and testing really is

John Krasinski is the BEST - SGN (Some Good News network)

Neighbor of mine just sent me this. He’d been a trump fan for a while. Focused only on how his 401(k) had been doing

Been trying to explain that trump inherited a rising stock market and actually worsened the upward trend.

Then Covid-19 hit and I’ve been sending him all kinds of links about when trump knew and how he’s done nothing and only cares about himself

He shocked me the other day saying he liked Mayor Pete and Amy Klobuchar. Ok. Wow. Nice turnaround

And then he sent me this and it just made me smile

Meadows set to resign from Congress as he moves to White House

https://thehill.com/homenews/house/490150-meadows-set-to-resign-from-congress-as-he-moves-to-new-role-at-white-house

Rep. Mark Meadows (R-N.C.) is expected to resign from Congress on Monday as he heads over to the White House to become President Trump's next chief of staff, a Meadows aide told The Hill.

A letter announcing his departure from Capitol Hill is expected to be released later Monday, the aide said.

After five terms in the House, Meadows will replace his former colleague and Freedom Caucus member, Mick Mulvaney, who served as Trump's acting chief of staff for a little more than a year. Trump had two other chief of staffs before Mulvaney took on the interim role.

Meadows will be coming into the high-profile role as the White House is grappling with the coronavirus pandemic, which has reached more than 140,000 cases in the U.S. as of Monday morning, according to a New York Times database. Trump has come under scrutiny for initially downplaying the outbreak at a time when the administration could've been preparing for the pandemic, by seeking key equipment and supplies.

Can't wait to see what great things happen from hiring only the best!

How many times have you come across *this* "tactic" from trumpers?

Where they'll distract and start mentioning thousands have died from the flu this year, trying to distract from the dangers of Covid-19.

What I don't understand is that they're ignoring the fact that trump is in office and all these deaths (flu and Covid-19) are happening under HIS watch. Meanwhile, they go back and harp on Obama for the ~12,000 deaths that happened over about a year's span during the H1N1 epidemic and again ignore the fact that we have 2,500 deaths in ONE MONTH from Covid-19 and the death rate is still climbing.

#Cult45

It is a literal cult.

I've finally decided to take a mental break

I’m going offline today. Been following multiple trackers and graphs and here and twitter and who knows where else. Twitler’s sociopathic comments last night did me in.

Have a little fridge full of beers and a couple boxes of Cheez-Its

I feel guilty, too, that I can do this while so many struggle and even fight for their life or to save a life.

See y’all soon. Cheers

Gov. Andy Beshear to Kentuckians: Do not travel to Tennessee

https://www.courier-journal.com/story/news/2020/03/27/coronavirus-kentucky-beshear-says-not-travel-tennessee/2930456001/
...

"We have taken very aggressive steps to try to stop or limit the spread of the coronavirus to try to protect our people," Beshear said. "But our neighbors from the south, in many instances, are not."

"If you are a Kentuckian living on that border, I need you to not go to Tennessee for anything other than work or helping a loved one or maybe the grocery, if it is there closer," he continued. "If you ultimately go down over that border and go to a restaurant or something that's not open in Kentucky, what you do is you bring the coronavirus back here in Kentucky."

Kentucky has 302 confirmed cases of COVID-19 as of Friday evening, Beshear said. Meanwhile, Tennessee has more than 1,200 confirmed cases, according to the state's health department website.

...

Beshear, who said he hasn't spoken with Lee, added that it wouldn't be fair to consider ordering to close the border between the two states.

“We consider different options every single day," Beshear said. "I’m not there yet.”

maybe that will put some pressure on TN to finally do the right thing
