Alinsky and Gingrich—separated at mirth? Alinsky's son speaks

Alinsky and Gingrich—separated at mirth? Alinsky's son speaks

In David's view, it's "almost immaterial" whether Gingrich has any idea what Saul Alinsky actually thought and did. The point is, he serves Gingrich's purposes—which are "to set him up as a sort of Willy Horton/swift boat kind of individual, some boogieman, some scary thing that goes bump in the night, that'll rape your daughter and eat your children."

...........................

When Barack Obama was trying to pass a universal health care law, he held town hall meetings that were attended by Second Amendment patriots, toting rifles and holstered pistols to let it be known they did not want their Constitution trifled with. It was bravado theater, and David Alinsky was impressed. "That would have been the kind of thing he would have thought up," he said about his father.

So I asked him if he kind of forgives the right when it pounds his dad—because some of the stuff they do shows how far Saul Alinsky's legacy has spread.

"Forgiving!" he said. "I think they're a bunch of fucking assholes. Would you like me to put a finer point on it?"

Curse those damn hippies for doing this to me!

The Lament of the CEO

I didn't complain when we sent the assembly jobs overseas because I'm not an assembly worker.

I wasn't concerned when we sent the tech support to India because I'm not in tech support.

I didn't sweat when we sent the R&D overseas because I'm not a scientist.

I wasn't worried when we sent finance, legal, and marketing overseas because I'm not a marketer, or a lawyer, or a finance person.

Now one of my former suppliers is selling a new product just like mine, but for half what I can sell it for.

I won't complain now, either, because I'm too busy looking for a new job.

Curse those damn hippies for doing this to me!

Fed Members Laughed As Housing Bubble Grew

Fed Members Laughed As Housing Bubble Grew

It was good times at the Federal Reserve five years ago: Low interest rates instituted by then-Fed Chief Alan Greenspan had housing prices booming, the stock market was rising and Fed members were—literally—laughing their way to the...well, central bank.

.........................

In what may be the strangest market indicator ever, a blogger found that the amount of laughter recorded in the official transcripts of Federal Reserve Open Market Committee meetings from 2000 to 2006 correlates almost perfectly with the rise in housing prices taking place at the time.

A particular series of side-splitting meetings by the central bank in 2006 marked the very top of the housing bubble.

The blog, The Daily Stag Hunt, tracked the times “laughter” was recorded by the Fed’s stenographer during the FOMC meetings. In 2001, the FOMC averaged 16.5 moments of guffaws per meeting. In 2006, there were, on average, 44 outbreaks of laughter.

RICHMOND

The state Senate this afternoon gave preliminary approval for legislation that would require pregnant women to undergo ultrasound imaging before an abortion, but not before rejecting a Democratic senator’s attempt to add what she described as “a little gender equity” to the bill.

Democrat Janet Howell of Fairfax County proposed requiring men to undergo a rectal exam and a cardiac stress test before getting prescriptions for erectile dysfunction drugs such as Viagra.

“This is a matter of basic fairness,” Howell said.

Senate Bill 484 would require a pregnant woman to undergo ultrasound imaging to determine the gestational age of the fetus, and be given an opportunity to view the ultrasound image, before having an abortion. The proposed law also requires the abortion provider to keep a printed copy of the ultrasound image in the patient’s file.

Just four days after ThinkProgress reported that the United States military academy at West Point was planning to host an Islamophobic general as its featured speaker at the National Prayer Breakfast, that general has now pulled out the event. West Point just issued this news release:

LTG (Ret) William Boykin has decided to withdraw speaking at West Point’s National Prayer Breakfast on 8 February 2012. In fulfilling its commitment to the community, the United States Military Academy will feature another speaker for the event.
