MOBIL OIL--they calculated sea level rise into their new facilities, while denying it

A few weeks before seminal climate change talks in Kyoto back in 1997, Mobil Oil took out a bluntly worded advertisement in the New York Times and Washington Post.

“Let’s face it: The science of climate change is too uncertain to mandate a plan of action that could plunge economies into turmoil,” the ad said. “Scientists cannot predict with certainty if temperatures will increase, by how much and where changes will occur.”

One year earlier, though, engineers at Mobil Oil were concerned enough about climate change to design and build a collection of exploration and production facilities along the Nova Scotia coast that made structural allowances for rising temperatures and sea levels.

“An estimated rise in water level, due to global warming, of 0.5 meters may be assumed” for the 25-year life of the Sable gas field project, Mobil engineers wrote in their design specifications. The project, owned jointly by Mobil, Shell and Imperial Oil (a Canadian subsidiary of Exxon), went online in 1999; it is expected to close in 2017.

More Charles Pierce: Trump Has Allowed Pundits to Revive the Great Penis Chase of the 1990s

Trump Has Allowed Pundits to Revive the Great Penis Chase of the 1990s
The Washington Post seems especially keen.

Guess what's back in the news? You'll never guess.

It's Bill Clinton's penis!

Because the national news media will jump at everything that proceeds from the mouth of the vulgar talking yam currently leading the Republican presidential field, everybody has decided to relive the formative experience of their young pundit lives—the Great Penis Chase of the 1990's. There are a number of excuses given for this: 1) Donald Trump mentioned it; 2) Bill Cosby; 3) Hillary Rodham Clinton's feminism; 4) Donald Trump mentioned it, and 5) Donald Trump, you know, mentioned it.

Ruth Marcus, scourge of teenaged potty-mouths everywhere, has weighed in:

Well, Bill Clinton has a penchant for something. He had a successful presidency—with an ugly blot. "Sexism" isn't the precise word for his predatory behavior toward women or his inexcusable relationship with a 22-year-old intern. Yet in the larger scheme of things, Bill Clinton's conduct toward women is far worse than any of the offensive things that Trump has said.

Is it worse than any of the offensive things toward women that Trump allegedly has done? Inquiring minds want to know.

Charles Pierce: "And, in a related story, Tamir Rice is still dead."

BY CHARLES P. PIERCE
DEC 31, 2015

...............................

.......let's start out in Oregon, where sedition has a Caucasian face and is therefore safe from all local and national law enforcement:

Ammon Bundy once helped his father repulse the government in an armed showdown on a Nevada desert. He was Tasered for his effort. Ryan Payne, an electrician from Montana, joined that same standoff and boasted of organizing civilians into sniper squads that drew a bead on federal agents. And not long ago, Jon Ritzheimer worried the FBI with his threatening rants against Muslims in Arizona and elsewhere, according to press reports.

And, in a related story, Tamir Rice is still dead.

"I am here now trying to empower and motivate the people of this community to take a stand against tyranny and show them that I will gladly stand with them," Ritzheimer said. The Hammonds don't want to be part of the outsiders' cause, and neither do many in Harney County. But that hasn't stopped the strangers from summoning help from militia groups across the country. They are vague about their intention and their plans, unsettling the community and putting law enforcement on edge. The militia plan a rally and a parade on Saturday, circling the county courthouse that houses the sheriff's office. The militia members have been insisting that Harney County Sheriff Dave Ward create a sanctuary so the Hammonds will be immune from surrendering. Ward met with the militiamen and rejected that demand. The militia has since labeled him an "enemy of the people." Ward said he has received emailed death threats among thousands of messages from across the country regarding the Hammonds.

And, in a related story, Tamir Rice is still dead.

Payne, an Army veteran, came to the rancher's defense. In later interviews, Payne said he was the "militia adviser" to Bundy. Payne helped array armed civilians against the federal agents. "We had counter-sniper positions on their sniper positions. We had at least one guy—sometimes two guys—per BLM agent in there," Payne told a Montana weekly, the Independent. "If they made one wrong move, every single BLM agent in that camp would've died."

And, in a related story…ah, what's the fcking point anyway?

Sanders: America’s New Year’s Resolution Is To Say “Enough Is Enough”

"In a few hours we’re going to be in 2016,” Sanders said, before hundreds of supporters who paid a small fee for hors d’oeuvres, a cash bar with a two-drink-at-one-time limit, and Sanders. “And we together have an opportunity to make 2016 a year that history will long remember.”

That new year, should Sanders win the nomination, would be the first step toward ending “the disgrace of the United States having more people in jail than any other country.”

“We are going to reform a very broken criminal justice system and end institutional racism in America,” Sanders said.

“We’re not going to continue to destroy our planet,” he added. “We are going to transform our energy system away from fossil fuel to energy efficiency and sustainable energy.”

“What this campaign is about is understanding that no president, not Bernie Sanders not anybody else can solve this nation’s problems unless — unless — millions of people, Iowa and across this country begin to stand up and say loudly and clearly: Enough is Enough. Thank you.”

Senator Tweets Every Mass Shooting In America From Past Year-He calls it his "2015 year in review"

Every Mass Shooting in 2015

In 2015 there were 372 mass shootings - incidents where four or more people where shot, including the shooter. I went through each and every one of them on shootingtracker.com, and tweeted out the stories. In the face of this carnage, there is no excuse for our inaction.

............

On Thursday afternoon, Murphy began tweeting out every injury and death from every mass shooting over the past year, as compiled by Shooting Tracker in conjunction with the Gun Violence Archive. Shooting Tracker defines a mass shooting as any event where at least four people are shot, not necessarily killed.

Here’s my 2015 year in review.

Quite amazing - from a US Senator:
