All adults should have the right to marry and divorce as they see fit.

Last week Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi filed a motion to dismiss one of her state's marriage equality lawsuits, saying that same-sex marriage would be "harmful" to the state. Several major newspapers have since reacted with commentaries blasting her position. From the Miami Herald:

All adults should have the right to marry and divorce as they see fit. That’s why, in another set of circumstances, I wouldn’t bring up Attorney General Pam Bondi’s two marriages and divorces – and her current relationship with a Tampa ophthalmologist, this time sealed, not with legal ribbon but in a well-publicized “non-binding” celebration in the Cayman Islands in 2012. Her marriages, divorces, and out-of-wedlock relationships are her business – not state business. But it’s hypocritical of this serial bride to use sanctimonious arguments to try to convince a federal court to dismiss a lawsuit brought by the American Civil Liberties Union and SAVE on behalf of gay and lesbian couples seeking to have their out-of-state marriages recognized in Florida.

THE CON-ARTIST WING OF THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY

THE CON-ARTIST WING OF THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY
By Matt Stoller Jun 4 2014

.........................

So why did Geithner actually release this book? Perhaps he wants to make himself look good. It wouldn’t be the first time for a DC memoir. Or maybe the reason is more prosaic—maybe the book actually helps Tim Geithner make money. Geithner left Treasury and is now the President of Warburg Pincus, a powerful private equity group that buys and sells companies. Geithner has no understanding of this business, but he was hired anyway to run it, or at least appear like he runs it. Why? Sure, he’s a talented guy, but one obvious reason is because of his network of contacts in government and in the banking world. Elites like Geithner trade on their credibility, so he must have his fictionalized version of the crisis in print. If he doesn’t, then officials might eventually listen to the version put out by Elizabeth Warren, Neil Barofsky, and others and tune him out. While Geithner can’t block Elizabeth Warren from telling her story, at least he can throw sand in the umpire’s face.

Fellow Former Hostage-Letter to Bergdahl : 'You'll find many are blaming you for your own captivity"

"You'll Need to Relearn How to Be a Person": A Letter to Bowe Bergdahl From a Fellow Former Hostage
When I came home after 26 months in captivity, I didn't know how hard it is to be free again.

People will recognize you on the street and welcome you home. But you'll soon discover that others, in op-eds, blogs, and emails, say terrible things. You'll find that many are blaming you for your own captivity. Ironically, these are generally people who feel very strongly that your captors are their enemies. Some of them think you should be punished further. You'll see that many blame you for the deaths of American soldiers, rather than blame the war itself. Blaming the victim is always a way to protect the powerful.

Law professor tells senators: If money is speech, outlawing prostitution is unconstitutional

An American law professor told senators on Tuesday that outlawing prostitution was a violation of the First Amendment if spending money was a form of free speech.

“Your other point though about money not equaling speech is a critical point for people to understand,” American University professor Jamie Raskin said during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing. “There are lots of forms of purchase and exchange that we criminalize, for example, buying sex. We don’t say if someone wants to purchase the services of a prostitute, well that is just an expression of their speech.”

Jon Stewart rips Oliver North: Are you mad that prisoner-trading has ‘gone mainstream’?

......................................

“Finally, some practical advice from an informed voice on the right,” Stewart said. “You can overstep your authority, just lie the sh*t out of it afterwards.”

.....................................”

The “tragedy” of the exchange of Bergdahl for five Taliban members, North told Fox, was that the deal became public knowledge.

“The reality is, they don’t talk about it,” North said, before referring to Obama. “Ronald Reagan didn’t, and this guy shouldn’t have done it.”

...................................

“So you’re saying it now like it’s a bad thing. Does this make you mad ’cause it’s gone mainstream?” Stewart responded. “‘I was into using American taxpayer money to arm terrorist groups way before it was cool.’

Expect more tumult about prisoner exchanges & Benghazi--U.S. soon to recover all jobs lost in crisis

'Set your sights on this number: 113,000.

That's how many jobs the U.S. economy needs to hit its break-even point, to finally recover all the jobs lost in the financial crisis.

Get ready, because we're about to get there this Friday.

That's when the U.S. Department of Labor will release its May jobs report, and the outlook is rosy. Economists surveyed by CNNMoney expect the U.S. economy added 200,000 jobs in May.

Meanwhile, a separate report released Wednesday by payroll processor ADP, shows the private sector added 179,000 jobs in May. While that report was weaker than economists' expected, it's still enough job growth to get us over the hump.

Breaking even is a key milestone, but was a long time coming. It took just two years to wipe out 8.7 million American jobs, but it took more than four years to recover them all, making this the longest jobs recovery on record since the Department of Labor started tracking the data in 1939.

Fox’s Shepherd Smith contradicts network ‘yakety yak’ on Bergdahl

“If you desert or commit treason, you have to be proved to have done so,” Smith said on his show on Tuesday. “We can’t just decide because some people come on television and yakety yak, and we’ve got a report of this and a report of that and that’s what happened. As the Army said, as the Pentagon said, you bring them home. You bring them home first, and then you investigate.”
