Dallas County commissioners unwittingly back slavery reparations

Dallas County commissioners unwittingly back slavery reparations
John Wiley Price's Price’s resolution went beyond taking note of Juneteenth; it included a long list of injustices endured by blacks, from slavery to Jim Crow to predatory lending practices.

The Dallas County Commissioners Court declared Tuesday that African-Americans deserve reparations for slavery, even though most commissioners didn’t seem to know that they were doing so.

The issue arose in a resolution written by John Wiley Price, the county’s only black commissioner. Described only as a “Juneteenth Resolution,” it was approved unanimously.

Other commissioners admitted after their meeting Tuesday that they hadn’t read the document before voting for it.

Commissioner Mike Cantrell, the court’s lone Republican, later changed his vote to an abstention.

“The reason why I didn’t abstain this morning is that I had not received a copy of the resolution,” he said.
None of the other commissioners changed their votes, meaning the resolution remains the county’s official position. It is, however, a nonbinding resolution, and no tax money will change hands as a result of its passage.

Hillary Clinton gives book to squirrel that is stalking her

?1403120136

Clinton approached the squirrel, clad in a t-shirt reading "Another Clinton in the White House is Nuts," just before her CNN town hall event outside the Newseum in Washington, DC.

"Hello Mr. Squirrel, how are you?" Clinton said with a smile. "I know you've been following me around and while you're in between your gigs. I wanted you to get a copy of my book."

"I hope that you will make the hard choice and read my book," she added. "But you bring a smile to a lot of people's face."

Major Newspaper Dumps George Will, Apologizes For ‘Offensive’ Rape Column

Major Newspaper Dumps George Will, Apologizes For ‘Offensive’ Rape Column

Early this month, Washington Post columnist George Will wrote a column claiming that being a rape victim is now a “coveted status” that college women seek out. Will argued that complaints of rape and sexual assualt on college campus were overblown. He also suggested that women claiming to be raped were “delusional.”

Will’s column is syndicated in newspapers across the country by the Washington Post, which bills him as “the most influential writer in America.” The St. Louis Post-Dispatch, which has published Will’s column for a number of years, has had enough. In a message today to readers, the paper announced they were dropping Will from their paper and apologized for running his column on sexual assault:

The change has been under consideration for several months, but a column published June 5, in which Mr. Will suggested that sexual assault victims on college campuses enjoy a privileged status, made the decision easier. The column was offensive and inaccurate; we apologize for publishing it.

Will will be replaced in the Post-Dispatch by another Washington Post columnist, Michael Gerson.

AL GORE for Rolling Stone: The Turning Point: New Hope for the Climate---Is there enough time? Yes.

The Turning Point: New Hope for the Climate
It's time to accelerate the shift toward a low-carbon future

In the struggle to solve the climate crisis, a powerful, largely unnoticed shift is taking place. The forward journey for human civilization will be difficult and dangerous, but it is now clear that we will ultimately prevail. The only question is how quickly we can accelerate and complete the transition to a low-carbon civilization. There will be many times in the decades ahead when we will have to take care to guard against despair, lest it become another form of denial, paralyzing action. It is true that we have waited too long to avoid some serious damage to the planetary ecosystem – some of it, unfortunately, irreversible. Yet the truly catastrophic damages that have the potential for ending civilization as we know it can still – almost certainly – be avoided. Moreover, the pace of the changes already set in motion can still be moderated significantly.

......................

Is there enough time? Yes. Damage has been done, and the period of consequences will continue for some time to come, but there is still time to avoid the catastrophes that most threaten our future. Each of the trends described above – in technology, business, economics and politics – represents a break from the past. Taken together, they add up to genuine and realistic hope that we are finally putting ourselves on a path to solve the climate crisis.

How long will it take? When Martin Luther King Jr. was asked that question during some of the bleakest hours of the U.S. civil rights revolution, he responded, "How long? Not long. Because no lie can live forever.?.?.?.?How long? Not long. Because the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice."

And so it is today: How long? Not long.

Cheneys unveil Star Mangled Banner

?1403104780
Screenshot of Dick and Liz Cheney website. Inset: Scale rendering of what a U.S. flag is supposed to look like.

Notice what's strange about the flag at the top of this post? And no, I don't mean the idiot in the cowboy hat grimacing next to it.

I mean the fact that the stars on the flag look like Rich Lowry after watching Sarah Palin give her 2008 convention speech, or at least like they've been inflated with the same hot air they've been using to criticize President Obama on Iraq. Put simply, they're way too big, and as Matt Ortega notes, their manipulation of the flag's appearance is completely nonkosher:

The flag on the new Cheney site (http://t.co/...) doesn't meet U.S. flag specifications. The stars are huge. http://t.co/...
— @MattOrtega

So, given that the Cheneys evidently feel they need to reinvent the American flag, here's my totally non-trolling question: When is it that they discovered they hated their nation, and the flag for which it stands?

THE LOGICAL END OF THINGS - By Charles P. Pierce

THE LOGICAL END OF THINGS
By Charles P. Pierce on June 18, 2014

.............................................

The conservative movement in this country has spent the last two decades empowering the polite corridors of Bedlam while winking suggestively at all the denizens of the Chronic ward. This flirtation becomes more vigorous every time a Democratic president gets elected and it's been positively lascivious since the inauguration of this particular Democratic president in 2009. (Ooh, I know why! Call on me!) Just yesterday, we had a report about a conference co-sponsored by the Heritage Foundation at which all manner of conspiratorial lunacy was let fly, and all of it was no more or less nutty than what Mr. Cole there spouted onto social media. It is time (again) for the Republican party, and for anyone who pretends to be a respectable conservative, to run these people and their ideas out of American conservatism. It took only a couple of wingnut senators shouting "Boo!" to get Democratic politicians to sell out ACORN or Move On. It is time for the political elite in the country to force the choice, once and for all. It is time for the people who care about this country to shun these people, and the politicians who empower them, and the media superstars who pander to their worst instincts, and to the political ideas that have proven themselves to be, over and over again, the most dangerous in the country's history. It's time for Boehner, and Priebus, and entire Republican political apparatus publicly to renounce secessionism, and nullification, and the idea that we are now -- or are dangerously on the brink of—tyranny, if the word has any meaning at all. That means reading the people who promote this stuff out of your party, whether they are members of Congress or state legislators, or members of the state and national committees. That means depriving of your presence any media member who trafficks in this perilous foolishness, and punishing those Republicans who decline to do the same.

Or you can be the party of sedition and cop-killing.

Your choice.

Clock's ticking.

Clinton says she's open to legalizing marijuana

Source: The Hill

Hillary Clinton said she didn’t smoke marijuana when she was young and has no future plans to do so, but that it “should be available under appropriate circumstances” for medicinal use.

She said, however, that she doesn’t believe there’s enough information available to decide when those circumstances are.

"I think we need to be very clear about the benefits of marijuana use for medicinal purposes. I don't think we've done enough research yet," Clinton said during a town-hall style forum hosted by CNN on Tuesday.

She said “it should be available under appropriate circumstances, but I do think we need more research."

U.S. captures Benghazi suspect in secret raid

U.S. Special Operations forces captured one of the suspected ringleaders of the terrorist attacks in Benghazi in a secret raid in Libya over the weekend, the first time one of the accused perpetrators of the 2012 assault has been apprehended, according to U.S. officials.

The officials said Ahmed Abu Khattala was captured Sunday near Benghazi by American troops, working alongside the FBI, following months of planning, and was now in U.S. custody “in a secure location outside Libya.” The officials said there were no casualties in the operation, and that all U.S. personnel involved have safely left Libya.

Khattala’s apprehension is a major victory for the Obama administration, which has been criticized for having failed so far to bring those responsible for the Benghazi attacks to justice.

......................................

The Washington Post learned about the capture Monday but agreed to a request from the White House to delay publication of a story because of security concerns.

UPDATED TO ADD:
President Obama's full statement:

The United States has an unwavering commitment to bring to justice those responsible for harming Americans. Since the deadly attacks on our facilities in Benghazi, I have made it a priority to find and bring to justice those responsible for the deaths of four brave Americans. I recently authorized an operation in Libya to detain an individual charged for his role in these attacks, Ahmed Abu Khatallah. The fact that he is now in U.S. custody is a testament to the painstaking efforts of our military, law enforcement, and intelligence personnel. Because of their courage and professionalism, this individual will now face the full weight of the American justice system.

Even as we welcome the success of this operation, we also pause to remember the four Americans who gave their lives in Benghazi representing their country: Ambassador Chris Stevens, Sean Smith, Tyrone Woods, and Glen Doherty. As I said shortly after the attack, they exemplified the values that we stand for as a nation, including a commitment to freedom and justice. All Americans should be grateful for their service, just as we are grateful to all our personnel – civilian and military – who represent our country around the globe. We will continue to honor our fallen by carrying on their efforts in support of the Libyan people’s aspirations to live in a peaceful, prosperous, and democratic society.

With this operation, the United States has once again demonstrated that we will do whatever it takes to see that justice is done when people harm Americans. We will continue our efforts to bring to justice those who were responsible for the Benghazi attacks. We will remain vigilant against all acts of terrorism, and we will continue to prioritize the protection of our service-members and civilians overseas. We will also sustain our support for the Libyan people, as they work to overcome years of tyranny and do the difficult work of building a democracy.

Poll: Nobody Wants To Put American Troops Back Into Iraq

A new poll released on Tuesday morning shows that while Americans want to help Iraq in its struggle against the militants that have taken over numerous cities and villages in the last week, there’s little support for reinserting ground troops into the situation.

It’s in that context that the poll, released on Tuesday from Public Policy Polling (PPP), surveyed 790 registered voters over the weekend. The result: many more Americans prefer the policies of President Obama in this instance, over the suggestions of neoconservatives like Sen. John McCain (R-AZ). “In order to deal with the crisis in Iraq, do you support or oppose sending combat troops to Iraq?” the poll asked, with 74 percent opposing the idea and only 16 percent supporting. While the poll was commissioned by a group against intervention, Americans United for Change, the question’s sentiment easily crossed party lines, with 57 percent of Republicans telling PPP that they’re against sending in combat troops.

...

Importantly, only 20 percent of those surveyed agreed with the idea that the current situation in Iraq is the fault of the U.S. removing its troops in 2011. Instead, 67 percent of them agreed more with the statement “the renewed fighting in Iraq results from a dysfunctional Iraqi government, and is rooted in centuries of sectarian conflict that intensified enormously because of the invasion of Iraq to find weapons of mass destruction, that proved to be nonexistent.”

Karl Rove: Pointing Out Bush Administration WMD Lies Is An 'Old Argument' We Waste Time On

Karl Rove: Pointing Out Bush Administration WMD Lies Is An 'Old Argument' We Waste Time On

Rove decided to throw in a new twist on Bill O'Reilly's show this Monday and be completely dismissive of the fact that they lied to us about whether Saddam had WMD's. Here he is arguing against a giant straw man on the left that only exists in Turdblossom's mind.

O'REILLY: Our pals over at MSNBC are blaming you and Bush for the whole thing. You know that. We shouldn't have gone there. If we didn't do it, we wouldn't have this and on and on.

ROVE: I notice that the MSNBC crowd is not critical of the two Secretaries of State who served President Obama, Secretary Clinton and Secretary Kerry, both of whom voted for the authorization of the use of force against Iraq. I think it might be sort of selective outrage at the Republicans who supported Iraq (crosstalk).

O'REILLY: But that's because you and President Bush fooled the world by consciously saying there were weapons of mass... look, you have to understand what this is. The far left says that you and Bush and everybody involved with this, did it on purpose, that you knew there weren't weapons of mass destruction and you said it anyway. That's their... and they're never going to get out of that. But I'm just pointing it out... (crosstalk)

ROVE: Yeah, that's an old argument that we waste time on because people on the other side who have looked at this say the intelligence came to the same conclusion, including people like Al Gore, Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton...

O'REILLY: And Bill O'Reilly as well.

We should have been looking back and prosecuting these guys for war crimes, but the Democrats gave them a pass. How's that working out for you now?
