McCarthy lets the cat out of the bag: Benghazi Committee a Taxpayer-Funded Hillary-Hating Super Pac

Where's the outrage?

General Prohibition Against Using Official Resources for Campaign or Political Purposes

The misuse of the funds and other resources that the House of Representatives entrusts to Members for the conduct of official House business is a very serious matter. Depending on the circumstances, such conduct may result in not only disciplinary action by the House, but also criminal prosecution.

Morning Plum: Top Republican suffers disastrous outbreak of candor about Hillary Benghazi probes

Twitter is abuzz with the news that the man who is likely to take over as Speaker of the House suffered from an accidental outbreak of candor on national television, directly linking House GOP investigations of Benghazi to Hillary Clinton’s dropping poll numbers. Here’s the exchange between GOP Rep. Kevin McCarthy and Fox News’ Sean Hannity:

McCARTHY: Everybody thought Hillary Clinton was unbeatable, right? But we put together a Benghazi special committee, a select committee. What are her numbers today? Her numbers are dropping. Why? Because she’s untrustable. But no one would have known any of that had happened, had we not…

HANNITY: I agree. I give you credit for that.

In some ways, this is not really controversial. Congress is supposed to exercise oversight when it comes to public officials, in order to achieve accountability. In saying that this has revealed Clinton to be “untrustable” and that no one would have known the details of her conduct without a probe, McCarthy is saying that Congressional oversight has revealed information about her performance as Secretary of State that the public would not otherwise have known. Whether the fruits of the Benghazi probes actually do reveal her to be untrustworthy is for the public to decide, but it’s not out of bounds for Republicans to make that case.

The problem comes in the linking of this directly to Clinton’s “dropping numbers.” It suggests that the probes are less about genuine accountability than about driving up her negatives, to use the cliche so beloved by political pros. It is reasonable to surmise that the probes at this point are more about pumping out as much fog as possible to create a general impression of wrongdoing that, hopefully, will sow inchoate public doubts about Clinton. McCarthy’s quote may not prove this to be true, but it provides more support for that theory of the cas

Elijah Cummings, the ranking Democrat on the Benghazi Committee, responds:

“This stunning concession from Rep. McCarthy reveals the truth that Republicans never dared admit in public: the core Republican goal in establishing the Benghazi Committee was always to damage Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign and never to conduct an even-handed search for the facts. It is shameful that Republicans have used this tragedy and the deaths of our fellow Americans for political gain. Republicans have blatantly abused their authority in Congress by spending more than $4.5 million in taxpayer funds to pay for a political campaign against Hillary Clinton.”

Jimmy Carter Is So In Love With His Wife, It Still Makes Him Blush

Jimmy Carter Is So In Love With His Wife, It Still Makes Him Blush
It doesn't get much sweeter than this.

Something about Rosalynn struck Carter, who immediately asked if she'd like to go see a movie with him. She agreed.

The next morning, Carter's mother asked what he did that night, since the beauty queen had been unavailable. He told her about his date with Rosalynn, which had made quite the lasting impression.

&quot My mother) said, 'What did you think of Rosalynn?'" Carter recalls. "I said, 'She's the one I'm going to marry.'"

Though it's difficult for Carter to pinpoint what it was about Rosalynn that made him fall in love so deeply, he tells Oprah that he simply knew Rosalynn was truly special.

"I knew that she was quiet, she was extremely intelligent... beautiful," he says. "There was just something about her that was irresistible."

"You're blushing!" Oprah says.

"I can't help it!" says Carter.

“This is not about some bogus video,” Connolly said. “This is about a conservative philosophy"

Dem accuses GOP of 'misogyny' at hearing on Planned Parenthood

The Virginia Democrat's remarks offered a brief respite from the heated exchanges between Richards and other GOP members of the committee.

Several members, including Reps. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) and Cynthia Lummis (R-Wy.), spoke over Richards as she tried to respond to questions, preventing her from answering before her time elapsed.

House Oversight Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) also sharply criticized Richards for her annual salary of more than $500,000.

Connolly accused of hypocrisy those who question Planned Parenthood’s motives.

“This is not about some bogus video,” Connolly said. “This is about a conservative philosophy that says … we believe in individualism and personal liberty. There’s an asterisk in that assertion … when it comes to women and controlling their own bodies and making their own health decisions.

Sanders: I won't be as naïve as Obama was with Congress

Sanders: I won't be as naïve as Obama was with Congress

By ELIZA COLLINS 09/29/15 02:02 PM EDT

If Bernie Sanders were president, he wouldn’t be as naïve about compromise as President Barack Obama.

At least that’s what the Vermont senator told David Axelrod on the former Obama adviser’s first episode of his podcast “The Axe Files with David Axelrod.”

Sanders said that after a “brilliant campaign” Obama made a mistake by expecting that he could easily negotiate with the other party.

“He thought he could walk into Capitol Hill and the Oval Office and sit down with John Boehner and Mitch McConnell and the Republicans and say, ‘I can’t get it all. You can’t get it all. Let’s work out something that’s reasonable,’ because he’s a reasonable guy. He’s a pretty rational guy,” Sanders said. “These guys never had any intention of doing (serious] negotiating and compromising … I think it took the president too long to fully appreciate that.”
