Someone, maybe, like the SURGEON GENERAL we don’t have because you filibustered his nomination???

Hilarious:

Senator Lamar Alexander on Friday released the following statement about the president’s appointment of Ron Klain to serve as coordinator of the administration’s Ebola response:

“The president already has too many White House staff ‘czars’ who are not accountable to Congress. I urged the president two weeks ago to designate immediately an individual to coordinate a more urgent Ebola response.

“I had in mind a cabinet-level official with the skills of a four-star general or admiral who had a broad public health background and would be accountable to Congress.

OMG!!! Obama hugged Ebola doctors and an Ebola patient!

Remarks of President Barack Obama
Weekly Address
The White House
October 18, 2014

Today, I want to take a few minutes to speak with you – directly and clearly – about Ebola: what we’re doing about it, and what you need to know. Because meeting a public health challenge like this isn’t just a job for government. All of us – citizens, leaders, the media – have a responsibility and a role to play. This is a serious disease, but we can’t give in to hysteria or fear – because that only makes it harder to get people the accurate information they need. We have to be guided by the science. We have to remember the basic facts.

First, what we’re seeing now is not an “outbreak” or an “epidemic” of Ebola in America. We’re a nation of more than 300 million people. To date, we’ve seen three cases of Ebola diagnosed here – the man who contracted the disease in Liberia, came here and sadly died; the two courageous nurses who were infected while they were treating him. Our thoughts and our prayers are with them, and we’re doing everything we can to give them the best care possible. Now, even one infection is too many. At the same time, we have to keep this in perspective. As our public health experts point out, every year thousands of Americans die from the flu.

Second, Ebola is actually a difficult disease to catch. It’s not transmitted through the air like the flu. You cannot get it from just riding on a plane or a bus. The only way that a person can contract the disease is by coming into direct contact with the bodily fluids of somebody who is already showing symptoms. I’ve met and hugged some of the doctors and nurses who’ve treated Ebola patients. I’ve met with an Ebola patient who recovered, right in the Oval Office. And I’m fine.

Wendy Davis received the endorsement of the Houston Chronicle

snippets from:
Davis for governor
Texas needs a leader who's willing to tackle tough issues too long ignored.

...................

A Gov. Davis, we believe, will attempt to invest in the future of this state. That investment would take a variety of forms, from universal pre-kindergarten to adequately funded public schools and public universities that aspire to be the best in the country; from addressing the economic effects of climate change, particularly diminishing water supplies, to protecting an environment increasingly stressed by a rapidly growing population.

Her appointments, we believe, would reflect not only the rich diversity of this state but also would include watchdogs, not lap dogs, over such vital state agencies as the Department of Insurance, whose current commissioner has regularly taken industry's side over the consumer. And, in the same way she twice resorted to a filibuster in an effort to block bad legislation, she would use the governor's veto pen to protect the interests of her fellow Texans.

We would expect a Gov. Davis to push for a higher minimum wage and a reformed tax system that brings a greater degree of fairness to individuals and small businesses. (Texas, by the way, is a low-tax state only for those at the top.) In a state where grinding poverty is far too pervasive, we believe she would develop policies designed to forge a viable middle class out of a society that's becoming majority Hispanic. She'll work with the Obama administration to expand Medicaid, so that Texas doesn't continue to lead the nation in the number of uninsured.

............

Abbott, on the other hand, was elected a dozen years ago to run the state's top law office, which at least partially explains what seems to be an unfamiliarity with the issues. It was not his job to craft a more reasonable tax structure for the state or work on the knotty issues of public education and health care, among a number of concerns that will become increasingly urgent as Texas becomes more populous, more urban, more diverse. Unfortunately, he has wasted time and Texas tax dollars filing ill-considered lawsuits against the federal government, ignoring the fact that Texas prospers when we make the federal government a partner, not an enemy.

China has sent thousands of doses of an experimental anti-Ebola drug developed by military to Africa

China has sent thousands of doses of an experimental anti-Ebola drug developed by the Chinese military to Africa. The company manufacturing the drug said it plans to start human clinical trials there soon.

Sihuan Pharmaceutical, the private Chinese company that last week purchased the rights to commercialise jk-05 from a branch of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), said it began manufacturing the drug after it was approved in August as a “special drug for military needs”.

The Chinese military has already sent enough of the drug to treat 10,000 people to west Africa, according to Dr Huo Caixia, associate president of research and development for Sihuan and head of its Beijing Aohe Drug Research Institute. Sihuan, whose founders are former military doctors, is part-owned by Morgan Stanley private equity funds.
The aim is to have the drug on hand in case any of the Chinese medical personnel sent to help out with the Ebola epidemic fall ill and for use in clinical trials which are now being designed, she said. It had not yet been used to treat any African patients, she said, but added that could not be ruled out.

Facebook unfriends federal drug agency

Facebook unfriends federal drug agency
By ALICIA A. CALDWELL
Oct. 17, 2014 7:57 PM EDT

WASHINGTON (AP) — Facebook wants assurances from the Drug Enforcement Administration that it's not operating any more fake profile pages as part of ongoing investigations.

Facebook's chief security officer, Joe Sullivan, said in a letter Friday to DEA Administrator Michele Leonhart that law enforcement agencies need to follow the same rules about being truthful on Facebook as civilian users. Those rules include a ban on lying about who you are.

Sullivan's letter was in response to a New York woman's federal lawsuit claiming that a DEA agent created a fake online persona using her name and photographs stored on her cellphone.

In court filings, Sondra Arquiett said her pictures were retrieved from her cellphone after she was arrested in July 2010 on drug charges and her cellphone seized. Arquiett said the fake page was being used by DEA agent Timothy Sinnigen to interact with "dangerous individuals he was investigating." Arquiett is asking for $250,000 in damages.

Senior NSA official moonlighting for private cybersecurity firm - private, for-profit company

Senior NSA official moonlighting for private cybersecurity firm
Patrick Dowd recruited by former NSA director Keith Alexander
Unusual for US official to work for private, for-profit company

The former director of the National Security Agency has enlisted the US surveillance giant’s current chief technology officer for his lucrative cybersecurity business venture, an unusual arrangement undercutting Keith Alexander’s assurances he will not profit from his connections to the secretive, technologically sophisticated agency.

Patrick Dowd continues to work as a senior NSA official while also working part time for Alexander’s IronNet Cybersecurity, a firm reported to charge up to $1m a month for advising banks on protecting their data from hackers. It is exceedingly rare for a US official to be allowed to work for a private, for-profit company in a field intimately related to his or her public function.

Reuters, which broke the story of Dowd’s relationship with IronNet, reported that the NSA is reviewing the business deal.

Since retiring from the NSA in March and entering the burgeoning field of cybersecurity consulting, Alexander has vociferously defended his ethics against charges of profiting off of his NSA credentials. Alexander was the founding general in charge of US Cyber Command, the first military command charged with defending Defense Department data and attacking those belonging to adversaries. Both positions provide Alexander with unique and marketable insights into cybersecurity.

“Gosh can you imagine if Mitt was the president right now?” Brown said. “He was right on Russia, he was right on Obamacare, he was right on the economy. And I guarantee you we would not be worrying about Ebola right now and, you know, worrying about our foreign policy screw ups.”
