Gay marriage ban ending in England and Wales on Saturday

http://www.washingtonpost.com/world/gay-marriage-ban-ends-in-england-and-wales-on-saturday/2014/03/28/f2f15453-6502-4557-ad3c-10e24fddb746_story.html

LONDON — Partners for nearly a decade, Sarah Keith and Emma Powell are moving next month from their native England to New York. But first, they have an important piece of business to take care of: their wedding.

“We’re quite calm about it,” Powell said Friday as she strolled the coastal streets of Brighton with 24 hours to go before “I do” time. “We’re not bridezillas.”

England, too, has been quite calm about their wedding, even though it marks the sort of transformational moment that has both cheered and horrified people worldwide in recent years.

With the stroke of midnight Saturday, same-sex couples will, for the first time, be permitted to marry in England and Wales. The wedding of Keith and Powell will be just one of many on Saturday that unite same-sex partners who have for a decade been allowed to form civil partnerships, but until now have been prohibited from tying the knot.

http://www.wesh.com/news/orlando-mother-arrested-after-dcf-finds-5-children-living-amid-trash-feces/25181682

ORLANDO, Fla. —An Orlando mother is charged with child neglect after investigators said they found her five children living in a house of filth.

Florida Department of Children and Families officials called police after working with the mother, Yolander Lasane, for about a month.

Photos investigators took at the home show doors covered in bugs, rooms filled with trash and food thrown throughout the home.

Investigators said dog feces was spread throughout the home and that beds were covered in urine.

Of course, most of us here are very aware of this threat. Just an FYI to our less experienced members.

Found this, no clue how good it is:

Nation by nation, speak your mind about....Yemen

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yemen

Yemen Listeni/ˈjɛmən/ (Arabic: اليَمَن? al-Yaman), officially known as the Republic of Yemen (Arabic: الجمهورية اليمنية? al-Jumhūriyyah al-Yamaniyyah), is an Arab country in Western Asia, occupying the southwestern to southern end of the Arabian Peninsula. Yemen is the second largest country in the peninsula, occupying 527,970 km2 (203,850 sq mi). The coastline stretches for about 2,000 km (1,200 mi).[5] It is bordered by Saudi Arabia to the north, the Red Sea to the west, the Gulf of Aden and Arabian Sea to the south, and Oman to the east. Its capital and largest city is Sana'a. Yemen's territory includes more than 200 islands. The largest of these is Socotra, which is about 354 km (220 mi) to the south of mainland Yemen. Geographically, Yemen stretches from the desert sands of the Rub' al Khali to mountain peaks 3,660 meters above sea levels, and drops back down to the coast of the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. The nation is separated from the Horn of Africa by the strait of Bab-el-Mandeb.

Yemen was home of the Sabaeans (biblical Sheba),[6][7][8] a trading state that flourished for over a thousand years and probably also included parts of modern-day Ethiopia .[9] In 275 AD, the region came under the rule of the later Jewish influenced Himyarite Kingdom.[10] Christianity arrived in the 4th century AD whereas Judaism and local Paganism was already established. Islam spread quickly in 7th century and Yemenite troops were crucial in the expansion of the early Islamic conquests.[11] Administration of Yemen has long been notoriously difficult.[12] Several dynasties emerged from the 9th to 16th century, the Rasulid being the strongest and most prosperous. The country was divided between the Ottoman and British empires in the early 20th century. The Zaydi Mutawakkilite Kingdom of Yemen was established after World War I in North Yemen before the creation of Yemen Arab Republic in 1962. While South Yemen remained a British protectorate until 1967. The two Yemeni states united to form the modern republic of Yemen in 1990.

Yemen is a developing country.[13] Under the rule of President Ali Abdullah Saleh, Yemen was described as a kleptocracy.[14] According to the 2009 international corruption Perception Index by Transparency International, Yemen ranked 164 out of 182 countries surveyed.[15] In 2011, series of street protests began in January 15 against poverty, unemployment and corruption as well as against Saleh's plan to amend Yemen's constitution and eliminate presidential term limit, in effect making him president for life.[16] He was also planning to have his son Ahmed Saleh succeed him.[16]

The United States considers AQAP to be the "most dangerous of all the franchises of Al-Qaeda".[17] The U.S sought a controlled transition that would enable their counter-terrorism operations to continue. Saleh handed over power to his vice Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi and was granted immunity from persecution.[17] A National Dialogue Conference was launched on March 18, 2012 to reach consensus on major issues facing the country's future. The closing ceremony was held on January 25, 2014. Yemen will become a multi-region federal republic.[18] President Hadi's term was extended for another year in order to appoint and monitor two committees. One to choose between two federal regions (North and South) or six; and the other one to draft a new constitution. The committees are expected to finish their assignments by January 2015.

As with most countries, I've never been here.

you know what opened my eyes even further to the vampires ?

My OP on no war in Ukraine, despite its flawed subject line. I would redo the OP to be more accurate, but live and learn.

The usual suspects came out to bash the President. It was telling who said absolutely nothing positive. I kept looking for certain names and never saw them. The OP bounced around in GD for quite a while. It wasn't like people didn't see it.

If you can't give the President any credit when it's due (and it's been due on many occasions), you get no credibility with me when you *might* have a legitimate critique. This place is thoroughly infested with RW trolls, stealth Republicans, stealth and open libertarians, and other people who don't give a rat's ass about the Democratic Party.

The Democratic Party is our best hope for positive change in this country.

Activism survey

What forms of activism do you engage in ? I know this poll will be flawed, hence the "Other" option.

I know many DU'ers are active in real life politics and activism. Simply curious with this poll.

here's my take on the President's speech

1- It's a speech to Russia, Ukraine, Europe, the rest of the world, and to we Americans. He's not going to abandon Ukraine in any way, shape or form. He's not going to imply that the annexation of Crimea was acceptable. He also can't be so harsh as to provoke Putin into irrational behavior.

2- There are harsh political realities surrounding it. He can't, in a diplomatic speech, throw red meat to the base, which we at DU would completely love. He's representing the entire country, which ranges from batshit insane warmonger teabaggers to pacifists. I'd say 99.9999% of we at DU are pacifists and 100% of us (except the occasional troll) think Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan have been mistakes.

2- Does anyone expect complete openness and candor in public remarks from President Obama ? Was FDR completely open and candid in his public remarks ?

3- Putin has taken us to task about Iraq, so it's pretty hard for the President to completely sidestep that issue. How does a POTUS make a stinking pile of shit smell better ? One can't. One day a POTUS may denounce that complete clusterfuck and not get impeached (not convicted) for it. I think the Republicans would drum up some BS impeachment attempt against him.

4- I agree with your point about the fine line between belligerence and "appearing weak".

Look, would I love for him to say, "Yeah Iraq was a horrible mistake. People need to go to the Hague for that" ? Of course. I just don't expect to see that from a POTUS in my lifetime. If a POTUS ever says that, I'll be shocked.

useless fact of the day....

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agattu

The United States claims Agattu Island as its own territory within the state of Alaska. The claim was disputed in 2009 by the Consulate of Jovak Helm, a micronation with two consuls-for-life as its leaders. The United States has yet to respond to the disputation. Under the Montevideo Convention, a state may exist in spite of its lack of recognition by global powers.[10]
