Muddy Waters I'm a Man, M-A-N

http://www.theglobaldispatches.com/articles/muddy-waters-im-a-man-m-a-n

The song has become something of a blues standard, having reached number 5 in the Billboard R&B chart when first released. It was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame “Classics of Blues Recordings” category, as well as being included in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame‘s list of the “500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll,” and was ranked by Rolling Stone magazine in its list of “500 Greatest Songs of All Time”.

The song is basically a raunchy number, both musically and lyrically, full of male sexual bravado. When Muddy sings “I’m a natural born lover,” and “I passed 21, I want you to believe me baby, I had lots of fun,” and “I’m made to move you honey,” there’s really no doubt as to what he’s talking about. He also says he’s a “hoochie coochie man” – the hoochie coochie was a sexually provocative dance that became wildly popular in Chicago in the late nineteenth century. The dance was performed by women, so a “hoochie coochie man” either watched them or ran the show.

The song’s chorus goes:

I’m a man
Spell M-A child -N
That represents man
No B-O child -Y
That mean mannish boy.

snip

Despite the clear sensuality of the song, there’s something more going on in the song. In the Southern states under Jim Crow, including Mississippi where Muddy Waters grew up, a black man was never recognized as anything other than a “boy.”

Windows Spectre Patches Are Here, But You Might Want to Wait

https://www.howtogeek.com/346465/windows-spectre-patches-are-here-but-you-might-want-to-wait/

To fully protect your PC against Spectre, you need updated Intel CPU microcode. This is normally provided by your PC manufacturer via a UEFI firmware update, but Microsoft now offers an optional patch with the new microcode.

We think most people should wait for their PC manufacturers to roll out this update rather than rush to install Microsoft’s patch. But, if you’re particularly concerned about Spectre attacks, you can get the updated microcode from Microsoft even if your PC manufacturer has no plans to release it. Microsoft’s patch is only available for Windows 10.

Spectre and Meltdown were disclosed at the same time, so this can be a bit confusing. The original Windows patch protected against the Meltdown attack, but required a CPU microcode update from Intel to fully protect against Spectre. Technically, the microcode update we’re talking about here protects against Spectre Variant 2, “Branch Target Injection.”

You can check if your PC is protected against Spectre with the Gibson Research Corporation’s InSpectre tool. Assuming you haven’t installed a UEFI firmware update from your computer’s manufacturer—or your motherboard’s manufacturer, if you built your own computer—you’ll see that your computer is vulnerable to Spectre. If you do have those patches installed already, this tool shows how much the patches are affecting your PC’s performance.

I ran the Inspectre tool and I'm protected. I'm guessing that's because I'm always doing beta testing for MS, and I'm running Windows 10 x64 Build 17623 (Skip Ahead/RS5).

A forgotten hero stopped the My Lai massacre 50 years ago today

http://www.latimes.com/opinion/op-ed/la-oe-wiener-my-lai-hugh-thompson-20180316-story.html

Helicopter pilot Hugh Thompson speaks with reporters at the Pentagon on Dec. 4, 1969, after testifying about the My Lai massacre in South Vietnam. (Associated Press)

Everybody's heard of the My Lai massacre — March 16, 1968, 50 years ago today — but not many know about the man who stopped it: Hugh Thompson, an Army helicopter pilot. When he arrived, American soldiers had already killed 504 Vietnamese civilians (that's the Vietnamese count; the U.S. Army said 347). They were going to kill more, but they didn't — because of what Thompson did.

I met Thompson in 2000 and interviewed him for my radio program on KPFK in Los Angeles. He told the story of what happened that day, when he and his two-man crew flew over My Lai, in support of troops who were looking for Viet Cong fighters.

"We started noticing these large numbers of bodies everywhere," he told me, "people on the road dead, wounded. And just sitting there saying, 'God, how'd this happen? What's going on?' And we started thinking what might have happened, but you didn't want to accept that thought — because if you accepted it, that means your own fellow Americans, people you were there to protect, were doing something very evil."

Who were the people lying in the roads and in the ditch, wounded and killed?

Bitcoin: a little help here please

I know some of the basics about it, but my enduring question is, why does the world need it and the other crypto-currencies ? To put it simplistically, I can pay all my bills with my credit card or cash or my bank account. A large corporation like ExxonMobil can do the same, with its corporate assets.

I'm reading this article which talks a lot about how bitcoin miners are soaking up all the excess electrical power in the hydropower-rich Columbia Valley basin. Yes, you can (or could) make a ton of money mining bitcoin, but for how much longer ?

I'm not knocking the overall blockchain technology but why use bitcoin or Dogecoin or Litecoin when I can just pay for my stuff the old-fashioned way ? I just don't get it. Thanks in advance for your respectful and informative reply.

Former Bush official says John Bolton was 'by far the most dangerous man we had in the entire eight years'

http://www.businessinsider.com/richard-painter-john-bolton-most-dangerous-man-bush-administration-2018-3

Richard Painter, the former chief White House ethics lawyer in the George W. Bush administration, blasted the prospect of former US Ambassador to the UN John Bolton replacing General H. R. McMaster as President Donald Trump's National Security Advisor.

"John Bolton was by far the most dangerous man we had in the entire eight years of the Bush Administration," Painter tweeted on Friday. "Hiring him as the president's top national security advisor is an invitation to war, perhaps nuclear war."

Painter ended his post with a blunt and stark sentence: "this must be stopped at all costs." He also linked to an article in the Atlantic titled "Hiring John Bolton Would Be a Betrayal of Donald Trump's Base."

The Atlantic article describes Bolton as "perennially hawkish," and notes that he was a big supporter of the Iraq War in 2003 and has said that he still believes that it "was correct."

John Kelly: Rex Tillerson Was on the Toilet When I Told Him He'd Be Getting Fired

https://www.thedailybeast.com/john-kelly-rex-tillerson-was-on-the-toilet-when-i-told-him-hed-be-getting-fired/

Reporters gathered at the White House on Friday were stunned when Chief of Staff John Kelly shared a very embarrassing story about outgoing Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.

The reporters were there with senior White House officials for an off-the-record meeting with Kelly, who was attempting to tamp down speculation about an impending administration staff purge. The Daily Beast was not invited, but was briefed on its contents by three sources with knowledge of the meeting.

According to those sources, Kelly recounted a very awkward conversation with Tillerson during which he informed the secretary that President Donald Trump would very likely soon fire him. The awkwardness was less a result of the contents of the conversation than its setting.

Tillerson, Kelly told the room, was suffering from a stomach bug during a diplomatic swing through Africa, and was using a toilet when Kelly broke the news to him.

The Daily 202: Trump supporters in Pennsylvania embrace his 'obnoxious' personality

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/powerpost/paloma/daily-202/2018/03/13/daily-202-trump-supporters-in-pennsylvania-embrace-his-obnoxious-personality/5aa7119030fb047655a06c32/?utm_term=.84b62fe44519

“To me, Obama was a butt-kissing liberal. Trump is Teddy Roosevelt. He just might go in there and kick some a**,” said Paul Ambrose, 70, a retired apparel manufacturer who collects toy trains and lives by a golf course in Canonsburg, Pa. “It’s the fear factor. Kim’s kind of [pooping] his pants because Trump’s put the fear of God into him. Obama would have come and bowed. We’ve got a wild card here. We’ve got a cowboy. He ain’t on the reservation. He just may do something. That’s why they’re coming to the table. Now lock the damn door. Order coffee and doughnuts. Keep the press out. And nobody leaves until a deal is done. What can go wrong?”

snip

Ambrose added that he does not like Trump as a man but thinks he’s an incredibly effective executive. “Do I like him as a person? Hell no,” Ambrose said of Trump. “He’s disgusting. He’s obnoxious. I don’t know how his wife stands him. He’s got the worst haircut in the world. No manners. Insolent. Arrogant. Obnoxious. But he gets things done. He cut taxes. He’s telling NAFTA to go pound salt.”

snip

“He’s not just a good negotiator. He’s the best negotiator,” said Kim Shannon, 57, an ultrasound technician from Ohio, who called his decision to accept Kim’s offer “brilliant.” She downloaded “The Art of the Deal,” Trump’s 1987 book, on her Kindle and has been eager to read it. “Maybe I can learn something and help my personal finances,” she said. "He’s saved the country. It’s not done yet, but he’s going to become the greatest president to ever serve in office.”

Shannon remains as confident as ever that Trump will reverse decades of decline in the Ohio River Valley. When she was a kid in East Liverpool, Ohio, a nearby steel mill employed 6,000 people and kept the town thriving. It’s been shuttered for decades. “When I grew up, it was like Mayberry and Andy Griffith. Now it’s junkie-ville,” she said. “Everybody is in a holding pattern. We’re waiting for the factories to return, but I know they will. … For the first time in many, many years, I’m optimistic. Everything didn’t collapse at once and it will not return in one day. It’s going to take a period of years to return.”

The ignorance, the stupidity, I despair for my country. He has a FASCIST CULT.

Why Cats Knock Everything Over

https://www.inverse.com/article/42180-why-do-cats-knock-everything-over-science-explains

Cats are both feared and loved by their humans and the entire internet, mostly because of their bizarre behaviors. One of their favorite activities is knocking over every object in their field of view, leaving humans to pick up the mess as usual. It doesn’t make any sense, but cat logic isn’t concerned with our human conventions of “right” and “wrong.”

A feline researcher tells Inverse that though the behavior is definitely mysterious, scientists have some ideas about why cats love to shove our stuff off tables and shelves.

“A lot of cats knock things over because they have learned it is a quick and easy way to get their human’s attention,” cat researcher Mikel Delgado, a postdoctoral fellow at the School of Veterinary Medicine at UC Davis, tells Inverse. “This behavior typically stems from boredom and/or a failure of the owner to acknowledge cats for ‘good behavior.’”

It’s possible that cats’ impulse to knock things over is just part of their hardwiring as hunters. We often forget that cats in the wild are fierce predators and that the ones in our apartments still have that drive inside them, even if they’re just hunting for hair ties and ankles.
