What Happens When You Throw A Big Chunk Of Sodium In A Lake

#t=0

Pure sodium is probably the closest thing we have to wildfire from "Game of Thrones." Except napalm. And maybe some other stuff.

100 Most Frequently Asked Help Desk Questions and Answers

http://www.terminally-incoherent.com/blog/2013/06/24/100-most-frequently-asked-help-desk-questions-and-answers/

I have been working in IT for way to many years to be still considered a sane and well adjusted individual. After you spend a few years in this industry you realize that some questions asked by users keep recurring like bad dreams or glitches in the matrix.

Below is my attempt to compile a comprehensive list of frequently asked IT questions you might encounter when working as a systems administrator or help-desk drone. All of these are actual quotes from various ticketing systems and email exchanges. I preserved original grammar and spelling wherever possible.

Feel free to print this out and use it in your help desk training manuals.

1. Is it a virus?

No.

2. Are you sure?

Yes.

3. My Microsoft is error!

Reboot.

4. I already did!

Disconnect all cables and peripherals, remove the battery and hold down the power button for 60 seconds.

5. Oh, am I doing this to discharge the capacitors on the motherboard?

No, you are doing this to ensure that you actually reboot the machine rather than browse Facebook for 5 minutes and say that you did.

6. Is the email down?

No. Flip the WiFi switch on the side of the laptop.

18 year olds registering to vote in Florida because of MMJ ballot initiative

I know this because my son and his friends have registered to vote in the November election. I told my son I was surprised and very proud of him. Yea yea, it would have been more "pure" if they registered out of pure civic-mindedness, but I'm quite sure his friends all registered as Democrats. My son is a good liberal Democrat, just like his papa.

Maybe there's hope for them young'uns yet

Bugs flooding Windows XP

http://www.srpressgazette.com/news/business/bugs-flooding-windows-xp-1.332046?page=0

Exploitation of the unprotected computer operating system, Windows XP, is happening, said Brian Wilkey, senior vice president of Digital Boardwalk, Inc., a Pensacola based information technology (IT) company. It was predicted to happen after the April 8 termination of support by Microsoft, a standard practice called a program's end of life (EOL), computer problems would come for dedicated XP users. Microsoft will no longer publish updates for the 12-year-old system; CNN Money reported 29 percent of the world's computers were still utilizing XP. Because of this issue, two major effects are one, new hardware, like printers and monitors, won't be able to communicate with the outdated system, and two, Microsoft will no longer offer patches to newly discovered vulnerabilities.

Wilkey discussed three results his company as seen since XP's EOL.

The first result, Wilkey said he’s seen a wave of malicious software, known as malware, attacking machines still running XP. Wilkey said, "We've seen an 80 percent increase in malware toward XP machines for the clients we manage." He said they could not trace it back to the source, but did track it down to the second week of May. According to Wilkey, this malware has become more insidious. Originally, he said, malware would masquerade as protection software and declare there was a threat on the system. Unaware users would pay a sum to the fake anti-virus company to remove it. Wilkey said the focus of cyber attacks has changed. "Identities are worth a lot of money," Wilkey said, as evidenced by the Target and eBay cyber attacks. "Identity protection is a wise investment," he said.

Wilky identified seniors as the most vulnerable to identity attacks. “I’m willing to bet the older demographic is still using XP,” he said. Wilky said it takes only one time of putting sensitive personal information online, like making purchases via the internet or entering a social security number, to become vulnerable to attack.

Jewish Family Gets $68 Million for 1938 Nazi Store Seizures

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2014-06-12/jewish-family-awarded-68-million-for-1938-nazi-store-seizures.html

The heirs of a Jewish family that owned Schocken AG, a German department-store chain seized by the Nazis, were awarded an extra 50 million euros ($68 million) in compensation by a Berlin court.

The German government, which has already paid about 15 million euros to the family for a building in Chemnitz, must put up the additional amount for the assets, the court ruled. The heirs live in Israel and the U.S., court spokesman Stephan Groscurth said in an e-mailed statement today.

Salman Schocken -- who established the chain with his brother Simon -- also founded in 1931 a publishing house in Germany, which began selling in the U.S. in 1945 under the name Schocken Books. The stores were seized by the Nazis in 1938.

“You find us very happy to finally have the Jewish victims compensated after almost a quarter of a century of legal battles,” said Bernd-Wilhelm Schmitz, the lawyer for the Schocken family. “This hasn’t been a case like any other, moving us very much on a personal level as well.”
