I miss Anthony Bourdain, watching some of his CNN specials now

He was only a few years older than me when he died. I never dreamed he would die the way he did.

So now to see him laugh and crack jokes is a bit haunting and a little sad. I hope he went to a better place.

Jimmy Carter to campaign for Stacey Abrams in Georgia

http://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/406797-jimmy-carter-to-campaign-for-stacy-abrams-in-georgia

Former President Jimmy Carter is set to make an appearance with Georgia Democratic gubernatorial nominee Stacey Abrams next week as she unveils her rural health-care platform.

Carter, who is a native of Georgia and endorsed Abrams last month, will appear with his wife and tour a new Mercer Medicine facility and then host a press conference with Abrams on “supporting rural medical facilities and rural healthcare professionals,” her campaign announced Friday.

"I am honored to campaign with President Jimmy Carter. His integrity, commitment to faith with works, and dedication to eradicating poverty serve as an example as I seek to lead our state to prosperity. I look forward to joining him in Plains to discuss how we can address the unique challenges rural Georgians face when accessing affordable health care," Abrams said in a statement obtained by The Hill.

Abrams is facing off in the November elections against conservative firebrand Brian Kemp, who is currently Georgia's Republican secretary of State. Abrams has racked up support from progressive groups while President Trump has thrown his support behind Kemp.

Bob Woodward on the 'Best Obtainable Version of the Truth' About Trump

http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2018/09/bob-woodward-interview-fear.html

By the time I arrived at Bob Woodward’s townhouse in Georgetown on Friday morning, his latest book, Fear, was already in its ninth printing, with more copies sold on just the first day of its release than there are people living in the city of Washington.

Through the perspective of his sources, Woodward paints a choppy portrait of the first year of Donald Trump’s presidency. You may have heard that it’s not going well, and Fear is here to add to that perception with some behind-the-scenes specifics. For instance, that Trump doesn’t understand how U.S. trade policy might relate to U.S. foreign policy. Or that when papers are stolen off his desk, he doesn’t notice, doesn’t even remember that they existed, for weeks. Or that he orders his tweets printed out, so that he can study in analog the metrics of their reach. Or that he called his own attorney general “mentally retarded.”

The book unfolds as a series of stories about the officials and staffers in the administration who, to prevent catastrophes both domestic and international, must expertly navigate their relationship with the president, or hatch plots to distract him or coax him away from his most destructive whims.

Trump has responded to all of this in the most predictable of ways, amplifying the book through his tantrums against Woodward. Since the first details about its contents were published last week, it’s felt as though Fear is everywhere.

Vanity Fair: "Ivanka Trump is even worried about impeachment"

As Hurricane Florence bears down on the Carolinas, Donald Trump’s West Wing is still struggling to recover from yet another deluge of horrible news. Yesterday, Bob Woodward’s publisher Simon & Schuster announced that Woodward’s new book, Fear, has sold more than 750,000 copies and is on its way to a ninth printing. A CNN poll released this week showed Trump’s approval rating plummeting to 36 percent. With the midterm elections less than two months away, the West Wing is girding for Republicans to lose the House and even the Senate, sources said. Ivanka Trump is even worried about impeachment, a source close to her told me. “It’s just horrible,” a former White House official said.

Major Damage Reported: 180,000+ Lose Power, 150 Await Rescue as Florence Slams North Carolina

https://weather.com/safety/hurricane/news/2018-09-13-hurricane-florence-north-carolina-impacts

Major structural damage to homes and businesses has been reported by the Onslow County PIO as Hurricane Florence lashes North Carolina early Friday morning. More than 180,000 homes and businesses have lost power as Florence crashed into the coast with heavy surf and torrential rain that triggered flooding and knocked down trees and power lines.

Some 150 people were awaiting rescue in New Bern early Friday morning, the City of New Bern tweeted out. The city saw significant storm surge flooding after the Neuse River overflowed its banks and swept into the town.

River flooding peaked 10.1 feet on the Neuse, according to a USGS gauge. Roads were covered with flood water in what was expected to be the first of many waves of ever-worsening floods for the city.

Florida Republican for governor wants to have it both ways on climate

https://thinkprogress.org/florida-governor-climate-change-gillum-desantis-814aef8d6322/

Amid increasingly tight polling in Florida’s gubernatorial race, Republican Ron DeSantis is emphasizing his environmental bonafides, even as he refuses to fully acknowledge climate change. That green push comes as his opponent, Democrat Andrew Gillum, continues to net support from environmental advocates and organizations.

During a visit to the Everglades on Wednesday, DeSantis touted his commitment to the numerous environmental issues facing Florida, a coastal and low-lying state where climate issues are a leading concern. Sea-level rise in particular poses a catastrophic risk for South Florida and DeSantis singled out the issue — even as he pushed back on embracing long-established climate science.

“I am not in the pew of the global warming leftist,” DeSantis told reporters, calling himself a “Teddy Roosevelt conservationist.” This was followed by him reportedly emphasizing, “I’m not a global warming person. I don’t want that label on me.”

Still, he went on to acknowledge the realities of South Florida. “The sea rise may be because of human activity and the changing climate, maybe it is not, I do not know,” DeSantis said. “What I do know is I see the sea rising. I see the increase in flooding in South Florida. I think you would be a fool to not consider that is an issue we need to address.”

So sick of these climate change denying Republicans.

Jimmy Carter at Emory: I'd change all of Trump's policies if I were president again

https://www.ajc.com/news/jimmy-carter-emory-change-all-trump-policies-were-president-again/malYxU7HDrgypZsV9sbqTM/

What would Jimmy Carter do if he became president of the United States again?

Pretty much the opposite of what the current Oval Office occupant is doing.

“If I were foolish enough to feel I could be president again, I think the first thing I would do would be to change all of the policies that President Trump has initiated,” Carter, 93, said Wednesday night at Emory University. “I pray for him fairly regularly. If he answered my prayers, he’d have to change a lot of things.”

Carter’s comments, which came midway through his 37th annual Town Hall for first-year Emory students, sparked a standing ovation among about half the youthful crowd packed onto the bleachers in the Woodruff P.E. Center. Nor was it his only popular response during a nearly hourlong Q&A with some 1700 students who were young enough to be his grandchildren.

House Republicans urge Trump to reconsider opposition to federal pay hike

Source: Washington Post

In a rare break with President Trump, a growing number of congressional Republicans are calling on him to reverse his opposition to giving federal employees a pay raise next year, warning his stance could hurt the party in November’s midterm elections.

Some GOP lawmakers fear denying even a small pay increase to the 2.1 million civil servants across the country could be politically damaging in House districts the GOP is defending this fall, particularly those with heavy concentrations of federal workers that provide support to military bases.

“Look, a lot of members have a significant federal presence in their district and feel very strongly about this,” said Rep. Tom Cole (R-Okla.), whose constituents include more than 20,000 federal workers, the majority at Tinker Air Force Base.

“The idea that people who are comparatively well-off get tax cuts and we’re not going to help federal employees get a reasonable raise .?.?. I think it’s a signal to the workforce about how they’re valued,” added Cole, who was among 23 House lawmakers who sent a letter to Trump last week urging him to reconsider his position.

Fox News Host Sean Hannity says Donald Trump will fire Robert Mueller after Hurricane Florence

https://www.newsweek.com/sean-hannity-donald-trump-hurricane-florence-1118526

Fox News and talk radio show host Sean Hannity is a known ally and supporter of President Donald Trump, often using his various media platforms to offer praise or even policy advice for the president.

When talking to a listener who called into his radio show Tuesday afternoon, Hannity said he expects the president to fire special counsel Robert Mueller and end the investigation into Russian election interference “sooner rather than later,” potentially after Hurricane Florence passes. Given Hannity and Trump reportedly talk so regularly that some White House staffers, according to The Washington Post, have dubbed the conservative media personality the president's unofficial chief of staff, it remains to be seen whether Hannity is offering the president his personal advice or if he’s simply expressing wishful thinking.

A listener posed the question to Hannity of whether Trump can and should put an end to the Mueller investigation since there have been no crimes brought against him.

Multiple former Trump aides and associates have pleaded guilty to crimes stemming from Mueller’s investigation, in addition to his former campaign chairman Paul Manafort being convicted. Dozens of Russian nationals and Russian intelligence officers have been indicted for their roles in election meddling. The crimes allegedly committed by the former Trump aides and associates were not directly related to election interference and were mostly related to campaign finance violations, tax and bank fraud and taking money from foreign governments.

Is Hannity just bullshitting ? Does he actually know something ? If Trump fires Mueller, I think it's game over.
