West Virginia official “can guarantee” people are breathing in formaldehyde

http://www.cbsnews.com/news/west-virginia-official-can-guarantee-people-are-breathing-in-formaldehyde/

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - A state official says he "can guarantee" some West Virginians are breathing in a carcinogen while showering after the chemical spill.

Environmental Quality Board official Scott Simonton says the crude MCHM that spilled into the water supply ultimately can break down into formaldehyde. He says the breakdown can happen in the shower and that formaldehyde is most toxic when inhaled.

He calls respiratory cancer the biggest risk with breathing in the chemical. He made the remarks to a state legislative panel Wednesday.

Initial testing at Vandalia Grille in Charleston showed traces of the chemical. Other testing showed no traces of formaldehyde, but samples are still being processed.

McDonald's employee arrested for selling heroin in Happy Meals

http://indiatoday.intoday.in/story/mcdonalds-employee-arrested-for-selling-heroin-in-happy-meals/1/340687.html

The next time you go to McDonald's and buy a happy meal, double check the contents of the meal.

A McDonald's worker, Shania Dennis, was arrested on Wednesday by the Pittsburgh drug detectives on charges of selling heroin in Happy Meals.

The arrest came following information that the employee was selling the narcotics at a McDonald's outlet at 6361 Penn Avenue in the Bakery Square section of East Liberty.

As part of the modus operandi, the customers who were looking to buy heroin would go through the drive-thru and say, "I'd like to order a toy."

If the credit charge was $9.84, take a closer look

http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2014/01/28/984-credit-card-scam/4957837/

If you see a $9.84 charge on your credit card statement, give it a hard look.

The Better Business Bureau says scammers are charging stolen credit card numbers for a small amount of money, and many recent victims were billed $9.84. The scammers believe few cardholders will review such a small amount -- and that credit card companies won't aggressively investigate them, either, the bureau says.

Gerri Detweiler, director of consumer education at Credit.com, tells USA TODAY that cardholders too often overlook small charges.

"It can be a lot easier for a crook to steal small amounts from thousands of customers than large amounts from a few," Detweiler says. "This kind of theft can be extremely easy since it's unlikely to raise red flags."

Excerpts from SOTU speech released by White House

http://www.usatoday.com/story/theoval/2014/01/28/obama-state-of-the-union-excerpts/4970309/

(original headline is "Obama to Congress: Let's make progress&quot

A request to Congress

"In the coming months, let's see where else we can make progress together. Let's make this a year of action. That's what most Americans want — for all of us in this chamber to focus on their lives, their hopes, their aspirations. And what I believe unites the people of this nation, regardless of race or region or party, young or old, rich or poor, is the simple, profound belief in opportunity for all — the notion that if you work hard and take responsibility, you can get ahead."

A changing economy

"Let's face it: that belief has suffered some serious blows. Over more than three decades, even before the Great Recession hit, massive shifts in technology and global competition had eliminated a lot of good, middle-class jobs, and weakened the economic foundations that families depend on."

Income inequality

"Today, after four years of economic growth, corporate profits and stock prices have rarely been higher, and those at the top have never done better. But average wages have barely budged. Inequality has deepened. Upward mobility has stalled. The cold, hard fact is that even in the midst of recovery, too many Americans are working more than ever just to get by — let alone get ahead. And too many still aren't working at all.

Obama's economic plans — and executive actions

"Our job is to reverse these tides. It won't happen right away, and we won't agree on everything. But what I offer tonight is a set of concrete, practical proposals to speed up growth, strengthen the middle class, and build new ladders of opportunity into the middle class. Some require Congressional action, and I'm eager to work with all of you. But America does not stand still -- and neither will I. So wherever and whenever I can take steps without legislation to expand opportunity for more American families, that's what I'm going to do."

The minimum wage is set to rise in Britain. And Conservatives are all for it.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/world/europe/the-minimum-wage-is-set-to-rise-in-britain-and-conservatives-are-all-for-it/2014/01/26/b944832e-8531-11e3-8099-9181471f7aaf_story.html

LONDON — The Great Recession has not been good to Rochelle Monte.

A home health aide, the 38-year-old mother of three has been squeezed by ever-rising food and transportation costs, even as her minimum-wage salary has barely budged.

But Monte will probably get a raise this year, thanks in part to an unlikely advocate: the ruling Conservative Party.

While Britain’s other major parties back a minimum wage hike, it is Conservative support that is most surprising. Just 15 years ago, Conservatives vigorously opposed the very creation of a minimum wage. Just last autumn, they balked at pleas for a substantial increase.

Google Glitch Sent Thousands of Emails to Some Guy’s Hotmail Account

http://newsfeed.time.com/2014/01/26/google-glitch-sent-thousands-of-emails-to-some-guys-hotmail-account/

On Friday, a Gmail outage led to widespread panic and confusion across the globe. That same day, an apparently unrelated glitch also caused thousands of emails to end up in the inbox of some guy named David S. Peck. (A Hotmail user, it should be noted.)

Here’s what happened: users who searched “Gmail” were led to a results page with a link that said “Email.” Clicking that link created a new email with Peck’s address – dsp559@hotmail.com — already filled in. A tipster pointed this out to TechCrunch, who then tracked down the owner of the email address: David S. Peck of Fresno, Calif. They gave him a call to see just how badly this bizarre glitch was affecting him.

“I’ve been getting thousands of no-subject, blank emails,” Peck told TechCrunch. “500 of them come every hour, I can’t stop them.”

The deluge got so extreme that Peck began missing important messages because he couldn’t delete the unwanted emails fast enough. Most were blank, but some contained messages like “who is this?” or “why are you sending me these emails?”

Bill Gates: There will be no poor countries by 2035

http://www.cnbc.com/id/101351736

As snowy Davos becomes engulfed in the hustle and bustle of another World Economic Forum, Microsoft founder Bill Gates took the opportunity to deliver an upbeat message in his annual newsletter.

The 25-page report, written by Gates and his wife Melinda, who are co-chairs of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, argued that the world is a better place than it has even been before.

Gates predicted that by 2035, there would be almost no poor countries left in the world, using today's World Bank classification of low-income countries — even after adjusting for inflation.

"Poor countries are not doomed to stay poor. Some of the so-called developing nations have already developed," he said in a his annual note, published on Tuesday.

I think you're dreaming, Bill.
