Embarassing problem: now it is more difficult to boot from USB

Here is the problem, fellow CHaS ladies and gents:

1- I routinely do beta testing for the Windows Insider program. That means being comfortable with installing new versions of their OS on a regular basis. If I have a problem with a beta, I just go back to the most recent stable version, no problems at all.

2- One day recently, I had some time on my hands, so I installed this version: Windows 10 Team PPIPro. Idle hands are the devil's workshop, and all that.

3- Before you scold me, yes, I should have researched this OS. It is CLEARLY not meant for an ordinary PC, such as mine.

4- I found out instantly that this OS was not usable. It took great effort to uninstall it.

5- Before I installed that OS, I was able to boot from USB very easily.

6- Now, for some strange reason, I have to resort to legacy mode and FAT32 to even have a chance of booting any ISO. The ONLY ISO that boots easily is an old version of Windows 10 (1507, from July 2015, which I have the DVD for and I made an ISO from it).

7- I have researched this pretty extensively, but I am still at a loss. I use Rufus to make my ISO's. Usually a Rufus-made ISO boots easily, even in GPT/UEFI/NTFS mode.

8- Yes, I can still boot from my DVD writer/drive and I can boot from an ISO mounted on my C: drive.

9- Is this a common problem ? My motherboard is this one: ASRock X570 Phantom Gaming 4 Wifi ax The motherboard is completely updated with all relevant drivers. I have flashed the BIOS multiple times, and it's on version 2.20 now.

I know I can just replace the motherboard, but that's an absolute last resort. Any suggestions, or just continue to use my workarounds ? Thanks everyone.

Your very embarrassed CHaS host,

Steve

This week's CPAC is featuring a speaker named Young Pharaoh. In the past year, he's claimed that: 1) Judaism is a “complete lie”; 2) Jewish people are "thieving"; 3) and “all the censorship & pedophilia on social media is being done by Israeli Jews.”

Another "shiny toy" for CHaS DU'ers: Episode IV of Star Wars in ASCI format

Before you ask, you do NOT have to do this. Of course, telnet is a security risk and should be turned off as soon as you finish playing with this.

https://www.wired.com/story/6-windows-command-prompt-clever-tips/

OK, this isn't exactly a "useful" trick, but it certainly is neat. If you enable Telnet in Windows (search for "turn windows features on or off" in the Start menu, then check the Telnet box), you can run:

telnet towel.blinkenlights.nl

To watch an ASCII version of Star Wars in your command prompt window. This has been around for years, and it still impresses me.

I'm watching it right now. It's not much compared to the theater version, but amusing anyway. Enjoy !

Darth Vader in ASCI format

eta: Simple steps here

1- Make sure Telnet is turned on by going to Control Panel, then Programs, then Turn Windows features on or off, click Telnet in the box that comes up, then click OK.

2- Click Start button in Windows 10. Go down the list of programs that you see until you reach Windows System. Click that. Click Command Prompt.

3- Copy this: telnet towel.blinkenlights.nl

4- Now paste that into the Command Prompt after the > sign

5- Tap the Enter key. Now you should see the ASCI version of Star Wars: A New Hope (Episode IV) start. It will say something about IPV6 but don't worry about that unless you know how to mess with that.

6- After you've had your fill of ASCI Star Wars, go back to Control Panel, then Programs, then Turn Windows features on or off, and UN-check the Telnet feature. Click OK. That should turn off Telnet again.

Texas electricity "free market": $10,000 for one month for a 3 bedroom home

https://www.nbcnews.com/business/business-news/deep-freeze-subsides-texans-now-face-electricity-bills-10-000-n1258362

Royce Pierce and his wife, Danielle, who live in Willow Park, west of Dallas, have been watching their electricity bill tick up by nearly $10,000 in the last few days for their three-bedroom home. While the family told NBC News they consider themselves lucky because they’ve had power, the financial burden has come with additional challenges.

Since the family is on a variable rate plan with Griddy, the company automatically debits the bill as they use electricity. Danielle said she closed the debit card connected to their electricity bill because Griddy wiped it out. The family has been using separate accounts and credit cards to pay for necessities as the storm goes on.

“We are hoping there will be relief,” Royce said. “This is something maybe we can skate by and tackle as time goes on but how many people can’t? A lot.”

If President Obama had behaved exactly the same, ALL of the Republicans would have convicted

Before you start flaming me, OF COURSE President Obama would have NEVER acted this way if he had lost re-election in 2012.

We all know McConnell and his band of cowardly scumbags would have voted to convict. We all know this.

I also believe IF...IF...IF...President Obama had acted the same, that enough Democratic Senators would have voted to convict. That is what makes Democrats morally superior to the Republicans. Yes, maybe some Democrats would have been cowards, but at least enough would have voted to convict.

THE REPUBLICANS ARE COWARDLY FASCISTS. It is 100% clear. The 7 Republicans and Democrats voted for democracy. 43 Republicans voted for fascism.

McConnell, translated: I am a coward and scumbag, and voted to acquit based on politics

Fuck you McConnell, your words don't mean too much at this point.

I'd also say too many blows to the head and too much Russian cash in his pocket.
